Yes, but didnt want ot enter the comp, hence why the comp is mostly bullflop.

That's a bit of a circular argument isn't it?

The competition is meaningless, so we aren't going to enter.
We didn't enter so you can't determine any meaning from the outcome.

Well done to Port, North and West for having some courage to take part. Invaluable experience for the younger kids at Port especially who got to travel to Sydney and Perth as a team.

The refusal of the 5 higher ranked SANFL clubs to take part was nothing but arrogance. I hope the AFL remembers that when inviting teams for future editions.

Sure, the priemoney is not massive, but what were they expecting...

My understanding is that Centrals could do with the money anyway.

arrogance

Arrogance to think we weren't so far ahead of the SANFL competition we couldn't afford to risk our SANFL season (our main focus, perhaps it should be others') by playing a few extra games compared to those around us? Let's also not forget there were questions unanswered about details of the comp when clubs were made to either accept of decline the invitation. No doubt fans enjoy watching their team play more games, but as much as you'd have enjoyed them winning finals?

There's a reason the only sides who accepted were bottom 4 sides. I suggest you defer to those who know more about the issues and the reasoning than you.

If you understand that Centrals need the money, we must be pretty well off then, based on your understanding of other issues.

How can it be "zilch interest" when at least 3 clubs supporters are very interested? Very arrogant if you think because Centrals didn't participate, no one was interested.

It would be interesting to see how Central would have gone against Williamstown, - perhaps that is the actual reason why they didn't participate, would not have suited some egos down there to be given a thrashing on the national stage one might think! Despite Port losing they gave it a go for their jumper. Hopefully Port will be one of the first clubs offered a go next season as they will likely continue to be a better side next season.

exactly... arrogance!

but maybe it didn't suit centrals... maybe they just wanted to concentrate on another SANFL flag...

I dunno about the other posters here, but if my club had dominated the SANFL for a decade then I'd actually like to see them try to benchmark that success on a national stage... I know my club tried to do that in 1990...

I just think they weren't prepared to put their balls on the line.

I'll gladly take finishing 8th last year, then playing in the foxtel cup, taking home some pocket money while getting some experience under the belts of the kids who willingly played in the competition for no match payments, then using that experience to take into finals this year...

...and then beating Centrals in a GF next year.

Indeed - that was the only real risk in playing, but given it is umpired like the AFl (ie, like netball) then not much chance of that...

smac wrote:Yes, that $40k prizemoney to the winning club would equate to:

21 players per match
4 matches
$476 per player, per match.

Compared to a $350,000 salary cap for a 20 match minor round (apologies if I'm slightly off the mark with the cap, but it's close enough to prove the point):

21 players per match
20 matches
$833 per player, per match.

Even for a club that played 4 finals, that equates to $694 per player, per match.

Take out expenses of playing in the comp and that money doesn't actually exist, does it?

Again, like the Adelaide Oval debate, your ability to completely miss the point and ignore the facts is amazing.

Costs were covered by the AFL and Port's players played for free.

We got experience and a bit of pocket money. Nothing lost in the exercise at all.

For us it was good. I hope we get invited back, even if we don't make finals.

Nope, different to me. I'd rather they try to win another SANFL flag, the reason they compete. I didn't give a stuff about "benchmarking", comparisons or any other irrelevant games. I would have thought your team would be more concerned on performing in the competition they play in. So what if they could beat Claremont, or whoever another team was, isn't it more important to beat Norwood and the sides they compete against for the whole football year? Look at the ladder if you want a comparison. They played North in one game, that would have been a rewarding "benchmark" game. The clubs gave their reasons, nothing to do "with balls on the line'. I notice where the clubs are currently that didn't participate.
It would be like saying to the years Premier you play against whatever AFL team has the bye when you have the bye. It will be interesting to see how you compete. Why would they bother?
I guess if Port had actually made it to the final and won, and finished the SANFL season in their current sixth position, at least they'd have something to be happy about. Fair enough if your team hasn't been good in one league try to win something else. I'll concede in some cases they may deem participation has no detrimental affect to their SANFL performance.
It will be interesting to see if offered, if the same clubs would participate again next year.

Once again, it is of interest to the supporters of teams representing their leagues. Plus I'm sure it is of interest to those who are avid football fans. Then there are those who have had a bet on it. Whoever wins this cup will be declared the best side outside of the AFL, and rightly so.

No they wont. they'll be declared the winner of the Foxtel Cup. And the best side amongst those competing, and rightly so. but i reckon you know this (and I was first to bite).

Those competing teams, (other than the SANFL teams which we know aren't), may not even be the best performing teams this year.

Claremont and Williamstown are both right in the mix to win their respective leagues, and 1 will be Foxtel Cup champion, so the best side outside the AFL comp will be a fitting title.

If you and your club are prepared to perennially compare yourselves with nothing more than the competition you play in, that's your perogative.

Personally I'm thankful both I and my club have higher aspirations.
