Port got within 16 points but Clayton gave away a stupid 50m penalty to gift Claremont a goal. Now 22 points about 10 minutes left

Well done Magpies. First quarter killed us. We played quite well and won the last 3 quarters. If we took our chances it could've been a different game. Now to focus on the SANFL. Not bad for a team that finished 8th last versus a team that lost the Grand Final by a point last year.

Weren't they comfortably the best side last year and the GF was a mild upset?

Very good effort by Port, well done to them, they've represented the SANFL well this year.

Guess that suggests that the WAFL is the best competition in Australia outside of the AFL, the WAFL State Team knocked off SA and now their club Subiaco have seen off the last SA competitor in the comp. Congratulations to them, it does at least give the SANFL the opportunity to look through the window at what they have to do to improve and become competitive.

Suggests that a team that will play off in Grand Final in the WAFL beat a side that will be lucky to make the finals in the SANFL, and it was at there home ground.

Sorry Sojourner - It can't suggest WA is the best comp outside the AFL, simply because we will never know if Claremont would have beaten any of the top SA teams, as they didn't want to compete.
It definately means they are one of the 2 best state league teams who competed in the comp.

Pretty sure the win alone by the WAFL state team suggests theirs is the better competition? The SANFL had one way to prove they were the best and came up short when it counted.

Had a look at the WAFL ladder earlier, pretty even competition this year.

4 teams equal bottom and only 3 games seperate 3rd - 9th and 3rd placed South Fremantle have lost 3 in a row and most out of form team at the moment. Peel made it 2 in a row today and are off the bottom.

Would make no difference which side it was, the top three SANFL sides would still struggle to get within three goals of the Tigers.

Claremont appear to be like Norwood ATM, comfortably the second best side, but not level with the top side.
Think it means the WAFL has improved itself a reasonable amount and is not incomparable to the SANFL any more. Didn't see the game today, but I would still back Centrals and Norwood against Claremont. Remember it was only a fortnight ago Port lost to South on their home ground, and had two weeks of mud-running before playing on what is usually a reasonably fast track.

So 1 side beat a side that didn't make the SANFL finals last year and you proclaim their comp to be better ? Are you serious ? You often sound like one of THOSE South supporters . Would have they beat Centrals or Norwood ?

I did Sojourner, was over in Perth to be involved with the call for LifeFM.

SA lost their ruckman, Craig Parry, early to a broken collarbone and it meant Ryan Ferguson had to help out in the rotations and left SA a little undersized in defence.

It was only a 1 point result in the end, SA had a few players unavailable through injury as well but WA did play a good game. I don't think based on that result alone, you can't say that WAFL is the better of the 2 competitions.

I was one of the few hundred people that went along to the match this afternoon. The atmosphere would have been better if the game was played at Claremont Oval instead of a cold concrete colloseum but then again this competition is designed to be viewed through a digital TV rather than from a grassed bank.

In the end I think the difference between the teams was pace. Port's skills, especially in the clinches, were perhaps better than those of Claremont but the Magpies didn't have the leg speed over the large ground to take advantage of that. If the game was played on a smaller oval the result may have been different.
