According to Dave Flanagan on 5AA Sampson was always supposed to have been chosen as the successor to Jack Cahill at the end of his two years at the Panthers, so they made the decision to move it forward.

This explanation should account for their actions I think. If they had intended to make him head coach in any case, then what they are doing now is backing in their original decision. To make him caretaker would be to undermine him in light of the earlier plan.

If Sampson had 2 years sitting under  Jack and learning the coaching trade, then perhaps he would be right for a handover after this time, but to give him the job immediately without even attempting to put out the feelers  for other prospective coaches, is in my eyes, a big mistake.

Don't get me wrong...I have the utmost respect for Sampson as a player and person, and I have no doubt that he'll make a good coach one day, but I just think it is too soon and he will really struggle with what he has to work with.

SA have little to lose and would not be over-run with top applicants, so why not give him a go?

Psyber...How do you know there wouldn't be any top applicants applying for the SAFC League Coaching job? The club hasn't even attempted to see who may be interested...

Exactly the same as when Lewis quit Norwood at the end of 2005 and Hill was appointed within a few days.

MacGowan couldn't even get an interview.

But I'm sure our Board knows what it's doing.

I admit it is just an impression with no supporting hard data, but who would want to be next through the revolving door on form?!

Yep.

Your club is s***t.

no need to kick a bloke when he's down, eh?

Yes, I agree. I think what has been happening down at South is not at all good for the competition and is very sad for those loyal Panthers who like all footy fans, want their club to be successfull.

Good post TB . Sampson should get the gig until the end of the year but the job should be advertised. Who knows perhaps the next Roy Laird or Ric McGowan is going to be available. The best available person should be selected.

Agree eye of the tiger. While we do need some stability Clay is a good choice for the rest of the year but why not use that as an opportunity to trial for the coming year. We should advertise nationally then and select the best applicant. Why 2 years? I worry we will have another Pyman situation and surely Clay would have been happy to take over for the rest of this year and we could assess his performance at the end of this year before deciding on 2009. Someone like Tony Burgess who was good at Broadview and is now at Westies may have been a good applicant given the chance. Now we will never know if there is someone else out there.

PhilH, thanks for your response, a lot of information regarding financial stability, most of which influences all SANFL clubs with debt not just SAFC. Pleased to read that your earlier comments was not sour grapes and i accept that, however it doesn't take much for such a reference to gain momentum a develop a life of it's own, particularly on this site.

Well said, that is often a concern of mine. Someone posts a half-truth and then it grows to become undeniable fact in some peoples' eyes. We need to be more resposible for what we write ... otherwise we'll become journalists. :)
