Giniver....terrible caller

Never minded him on the ABC as a special comments guy, thought he tried to add something to people's understanding of the game.

Yeah fair call, as a special comments guy he is OK, as a play by play caller I cant stand him.

Agree a recent player as a boundary rider would be ideal.

Sheedy is playing country footy, so wouldn't be available.

You can predict with grim certainty that a random B grade Crows flog will patrol the boundary line of the coverage, telling amusing anecdotes about Allan Bartlett's body odour issues in 1991.

In other SANFL news, the 2014 IGA League season will now kick off with Norwood hosting Port Adelaide at Coopers Stadium on Thursday April 3 at 7.20pm.

The historic season opener will also be broadcast live on Channel 7’s digital station, 7mate, from 7pm.

‘’Moving the game between the SANFL’s fiercest rivals in Norwood and Port Adelaide will be a wonderful way for the League to kick off the season,’’ Davies said.

‘’Having the Redlegs unfurl their premiership flag live on the Seven Network will provide the competition with outstanding exposure as it ushers in a new era.’’

NORWOOD AND PORT ADELAIDE UNDER LIGHTS IN HISTORIC OPENING ROUND CLASH LIVE ON 7MATE

Seven announces massive footy broadcast schedule across three stations. Prime time local footy and first ever Good Friday telecast starts new era.

Channel Seven today announced the opening round blockbuster under lights between Norwood and Port Adelaide will kick off its historic coverage of the new SANFL IGA League.

The meeting of the fierce rivals on Thursday April 3 will be televised LIVE on 7mate from 7pm.

And in a first for the SANFL, Seven will televise LIVE the Good Friday clash between South Adelaide and Glenelg in round 3 on April 18.

It will be the first ever televised football match on Good Friday.

Under the terms of the agreement with the SANFL, Seven will exclusively televise the match-of-the-round throughout the 2014 season with matches to be broadcast on Seven, 7mate and 7TWO.

Every single match in the SANFL IGA League will be telecast LIVE.

The historic agreement, announced last year, means that Seven will be the only place to see both the SANFL IGA League and the AFL.

It is the first time the SANFL and the AFL have been telecast on the same TV station.

Seven will televise almost 400 hours of footy in 2014 with matches from the SANFL IGA League and the AFL.

Seven is set to revolutionise coverage of the SANFL, bringing the passion, excitement and energy which has made the competition one of the strongest in Australia.

“The SANFL is in the DNA of every South Australian footy supporter and our promise is we will present the game like never before,” Channel Seven program manager Meno Toutsidis said.

“We are thrilled to be covering the SANFL again. We look at the period when Seven was last involved, in the 1970s and 1980s, as a high point in the television coverage of the SANFL.

“Our aim is to not only bring back the thousands of fans whose first major footy experience was the SANFL but also to attract a new generation of fans.”

“It is fitting that the first match between historic South Australian rivals (Norwood and Port) should be telecast on one of our new digital stations, 7mate, which has been a remarkable success since launching on AFL Grand Final Day in 2010.”

SEVEN’S BROADCAST HIGHLIGHTS

- Weekly LIVE telecast of the match-of-the round throughout the 2014 season. All Finals to be televised LIVE.

- Matches to be shown on Seven, 7mate and 7TWO.

- Opening round match between Norwood and Port Adelaide to be televised LIVE in prime time on Thursday April 3 on 7mate.

- First ever Good Friday telecast, between South Adelaide and Glenelg in round 3, on April 18.

- SANFL Showdowns between Port Adelaide and the Adelaide Crows in rounds 5 and 14 to be shown LIVE.

- Matches to be shown from all SANFL grounds with an even spread of matches among the 10 teams.

- Almost 400 hours of football to be televised on Seven with matches from the AFL and the SANFL IGA League.

- Three SANFL/AFL double headers where an SANFL match is immediately followed by an AFL telecast.

- Eight viewers choice telecasts where viewers have the choice of watching either an SANFL or an AFL telecast with matches screening at the same time on Channel Seven, 7mate or 7TWO.

- One prime time telecast (Norwood v Port Adelaide) with the possibility of a second LIVE night telecast in the final two rounds, to be finalised later in the year.

- Seven’s SANFL IGA League commentary team to be headed by Mark Soderstrom and John Casey with special comments from Port Adelaide premiership captain Tim Ginever.

Will be a challenge for volunteer staff and trainers etc. too, dumb move IMHO.

The Anzac Day move is a good one though, and should make for an excellent turn out and spectacle.

... or anyone, judging by the incessant complaints.

The ABC no longer wanted the SANFL telecast rights as it no longer fits their left wing obsession with South Polynesian Women's Curling.

Channel 7 have stepped up to offer a better product in a variety of time slots. Anyone who thinks Port Vs Norwood is going to rate up against Friday night AFL is seriously deluded.

Quick, cancel the fringe, the movies, restaurants, bands, cricket, training, the beach and life on week nights, we live in Adelaide and only want to come out of hibernation 2 days a week!

I guess that's the question - Is the viewership more important/beneficial than maximised attendance?

I reckon it'll be a bigger crowd on a Thursday, clashes with another game on the Friday night as well as the AFL GF Replay. No way would I have gone on a Friday but might go along for a look with a few others now.

I didn't say there was necessarily anything wrong with it - I genuinely don't know whats more financially beneficial to the clubs - Maximised attendance or additional sponsorship income from the greater exposure?

Understand completely that times are changing, it's the way of the world and always will be, but remember this TV deal doesn't return a direct dividend, it actually comes at a cost, unlike the AFL deal.

From a very small snapshot of about a dozen Port mates, half won't go to the game now because of work committments the next day but will instead watch on TV. That's not to say it's an accurate indication of both clubs supporter bases - Maybe it is, maybe it isn't?

Wedgie's point is fair, I hadn't really factored in neutral attendees, maybe this game can attract a healthy amount of them?
