HERE COME THE ROOSTERS!

Crowd: 7,794 at Adelaide Oval (including 7,000 rabid Rooster fans!)
Central District watch out…there is a new world order in the SANFL and we’re coming to get you!!
After sixteen long years, the North Adelaide Football Club has booked a berth in the Grand Final!...Yes, in case you didn’t believe it or read it correctly…WE ARE IN THE GRAND FINAL!
Rest assured, whilst the northern infidels will rightly start out as pre-match favourites to secure the flag next week, there is a steely self-belief and resolve in abundance amongst the class of 2007…as evidenced by yet another brilliant comeback victory against the reigning premier yesterday.
The boring, stale and monotonous Eagles vs Central grand final dynasty is over and a thing of the past…there is a new world order in place and EVERY North supporter must join in the Rooster army to make AAMI Stadium our fortress next week!
With a strong breeze blowing across the ground but slightly favouring the city end of the oval, it was poor finishing in front of goal that yet again hurt us as we toiled manfully into the wind in the opening stanza. Whilst Clint Alleway was marking everything and Trent Sporn was providing superb run thoughout the centre, poor goalkicking registered us an inaccurate 1-4 to 4-2 at the first change.
In the second term it was the enigmatic and livewire Nick Gill that stole the show with his sure hands and strong attack on the football and two goals to boot.
Alas, all the momentum we had was cruelly lost within an instant courtesy of a woeful free against Ben Hart – which culminated in the Eagles stealing three of the last four goals for the term to maintain a handy 20 point buffer at the long break.
As we now know this is of seemingly little concern and angst for our boys who have recently become the trademark come-from-behind specialists.
“I actually didn’t have to say too much at half-time because they knew. They were saying to each other, come on boys, we’re just a bit loose around the stoppages…and that it was I expect from our senior group”, noted coach Andrew Jarman.
Indeed, it was the wise and sagely heads of the usual protagonists such as Dean Howard, Heath Younie, Scott Bamford and Ben Hart that raised the bar and intensity in the ‘premiership’ quarter.
Nonetheless, they had some willing accomplices, with the magic of Shannon Motlop coming to the fore as he simply ran rings around the Eagles defence. At the other end of the field, the young guns of Josh Cubillo and Greg Gallman, combined with the experienced heads of Luke Ivens and Shane Schubert simply were impregnable despite the best endeavours from the umpiring fraternity. And as for Josh Coulter’s job on the dangerous Salter!
Scores were finally tied when ‘Gilly’ decided to show his left foot wares in front of the Groggies on the hill - pouncing on a loose ball in the pocket, Gill snapped over his shoulder and his goal resulted in the North faithful going absolutely nuts! – ranging from the sea of Red & White on the Hill, to the raucous roars permeating from all the grandstands, to ‘Angry’s Army’ in the cheer squad…cue Eagles supporters this was our day and we were simply not going to be denied on or off the field!
Six points up at the last change, there was simply no way the Eagles or their 794 supporters (who had now well and truly been shunned into a submissive silence) were going to steal the party in the last stanza.
Running again in numbers, our boys again cut swathes through the Eagles defence in the last term…with young gun Matty Wright, Chris Ladhams (with a superb goal from the pocket) and ‘Mots’ (with his customary voodoo and magic) cashing in on the on-field party happening! Off-field, it was a case for one intrepid reporter of struggling to write notes in one instant followed by standing up and going absolutely nuts with delight in another!!
At game end, such was the turnaround, that North had kicked twelve of the last sixteen goals of the contest to march to a defining victory of 26 points.
Post-game, an emotional coach Andrew Jarman thanked his boys for delivering the goods and the opportunity of the holy grail next week.
“We’ve given ourselves a chance now haven’t we”, he noted. “It’s a 50/50 ball game next week. The culture we are starting to develop here is that it doesn’t matter how many goals we are down, if we just stick to what we do well and with the belief we have for one another and the belief within the group…we can be very proud and our supporters did us proud today” Jarman said.
Acting captain Heath Younie, whilst elated with the victory, gave off a steely resolve of unfinished business ahead and relayed such to the group. As for now being in a grand final? “It hasn’t sunk in. It’s going to be a wonderful week not only for the players but for the whole footy club”, Younie said. “Our supporters deserve it as much as the players, they’ve stuck through us thick and thin. Seven years ago we were down in the dumps and looking to nearly fold…and now we’re in a grand final with a 50/50 chance. It’s a new game…put away last week’s result…put away this week’s result…we go into a game with a 50/50 chance. Yes, they’ve (Central) been in the grand final eight years in a row, but as long as we put in a good account for ourselves we are a good chance. We’re just thrilled to have the opportunity to have a go at it”, he said.
As for our formidable crowd support? I left this to ex-Bulldogs Matthew Krieg (who will celebrate 100 league games next week) and Daniel Wakelin who were sitting back and soaking up the atmosphere adjacent 200-gamer Scott Bamford. “They helped us get over the line, absolutely”, said Krieg. “We have a huge amount of supporters and I reckon we will outnumber the Central supporters next week”, he said.
As for the tireless Wakelin, who importantly gave us first use of the footy in the third term: “It’s hard to comprehend at the moment…we are just excited to be there (in a grand final). ‘Bangers’ been a wonderful servant of the club and we are just rapt we were able to do it for him”, he said.
To come good on Kriegy’s insight, it is imperative that all supporters make the trip to AAMI Stadium next week. Thus, if you foolishly have other engagements then now cancel them! I’ve already forewarned my boss I sense I will have a case of a rare strain of chicken flu next Monday! (self-inflicted of course!)
See you at the GF!!
P.S. Congratulations to the U17s in taking out the flag with style, and commiserations to the Ressies who unfortunately couldn’t produce the goods against the Tigers.
