Apart from no goal umps, what is the issue??
Just let captains make the decisions.

I recall Graham Cornes way back in the day (like when he was on 5AA with KG) used to make this very point, i.e. that umpires were expendable and club captains could do the job instead.

Not really sure how such an approach would work in practice.

Captains used to umpire games in the real early days of footy. They stopped that system because things apparently got quite heated at times, and there were too many disagreements.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

In the old days,
teams used to go to the local pub at half time.
The trouble was sometimes the clubs struggled to get the players to come back to the game!
