Lets give credit where it's due.

I think the man is in pain. He's had enough.

I have memories of him at his top and will always remember them.

I think his decision is correct.

Goodluck in the future Clive and thanks for the memories.

Don't suppose he was reported recently was he?

Remember after the 2005 prelim he was supposedly retiring so the SANFL didn't bother reporting him for what would have been a 3 or 4 week suspension.

If he retired at the end of last year, or because of injury then fair enough. But to pull the pin after getting dropped does nothing IMO but show
he's had a dummy spit.
Clive was a good player but went on a year or two too long. Perhaps Giniver should've suggested he retire earlier, then allow it to get this far.
No he finds himself down two blokes (Waterhouse & Eichner). Hardly a good thing for team bonding and moral one would think.....

Spare us. He hasn't died.
Selfish footballer.
Port have lost nothing here, people like this may win you the odd game but in the longer term hinder your progress.
Wish him all the best after footy.

How many times have you actually seen Clive play?? Judging by your stupid comments, not many!! Maybe anyone who wants to bag him can put their own footy credentials up on display and we can all judge their lack of achievements. Half of you clowns bagging him have probably never played a game, let alone done what he has. IDIOTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I misread that, I thought you were having a crack at Dog-ger :)

Still a legend over here in the west. A crying shame when he did that ACL as I thought it was going to be his year. If anyone get's a chance to check out the late Matt Price's book on the FFC< there's a whole chapter dedicated to Clive.

I didn't realise he was pushing 35 already. Props for going on this long and thanks for the memories.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

That's fine, so long as all your assessments of players from other clubs meet with the same generosity, we'll all be happy. God forbid anyone should have an opinion on a Port player that paints him as anything but Godlike huh?

In the article in the Messenger Press Clive states the main reason he gave it away is because he doesn't want to play in a losing side.
Thankfully we haven't had players with that issue at Westies, as we wouldn't have been able to field a side in the last 5 years.

"RETIRED Port Magpies full-forward Clive Waterhouse says the prospect of playing a long season in a losing side, not being dropped to the Reserves, prompted his decision to end his career last week." - Messenger article

He's shown his true character. At least it gives a younger player a chance. Knew he was a tosser, after seeing him and hearing him at the Sea and Vines Wine festival a couple of years ago.

What a joke if thats the case, if Port were sitting 3.1 at present he'd be still there he's saying. If he'd set a better standard for the young ones down there rather than whinging all the bloody time they might be in a better position ( bloody front runner i say). He's one of the reasons why the clubs in the position they currently are & he doesn't want to stick around & help them out of it instead he's looking out for the highest bidder to get his services in a lesser comp.
P!ss weak i say.

Very true PR - he looked like a sad slow pathetic old "has been" last week when he committed one of the most cowardly behind the play king hits on Macca. Talking to a former team mate of his at 1/4 time last wek who saw what Clive did, the team mate commented - "He should retire after that hit, he has lost it".

Good riddance to one of the most over rated, selfish, lazy and greedy ($$$) sniping players of the last decade or so.

What clubs did he go to for the money he only ever played at the Port Magpies, Fremantle and then Port Magpies again?

Spot on, the pommy pea heart Sh1thouse headbutted cicca like there was no tomorrow, despite his club having only kicked 5 goals midway through the last quarter. What a shame this was ethelton's best chance of even contesting a grand final, let alone winning a premiership in the last decade. ALL ended by the Eagles.
Poor old Jack and let's not forget the gun protege Ginever were outcoached in the prelim, even worse for ethelton was they managed to fluke a win over the eagles in the semi, and were red hot favourites to actually make a grand final!!!.

Haven't been around these parts for a while and don't agree with you often mate but given the appalling diatribe contained in this thread couldn't help myself:

Congratulations Clive on a fantastic league career spanning 15 years, a SANFL premiership player, a 100 game AFL player and an all Australian representative in the International series. Came back from serious knee injuries both at Fremantle and Port Adelaide.

Frankly, at age 34, and with the career he's had, he can retire whenever he wants to, and go and play for whatever club he chooses.
"This windfall from the Adelaide Oval decision cannot be turned into a moment when the SANFL sells off the farm to underwrite its lazy league clubs."
