The last time South and Westies had a decent crack at the flag was in '91. This was after the SANFL had a cleanout of 40 of the best players as they headed for AFL careers. This dropped the standard of the SANFL and South and Westies did fairly well, with most of the other teams providing the bulk of the talent to switch leagues.
Since then I would wish that all SANFL loving people have hoped for both teams to achieve a flag, and soon. The league needs it, the clubs need it, and the starving fans who have only tasted AFL success need it.
I have no answer. I just hope that those Crows and Power fans who yearn for a "traditional" game of footy will venture back to their old club to generate some more enthusiasm, and to re-discover the passion, excitement and feeling they used to have before AFL came to town.

And they were horrible for a long time prior to 1964. In an eight team comp., the highest they finished between 1945 and 1953 was sixth. They have only made the finals 11 times since World War 2. In 1959 they only survived in the league by the casting vote of the league president. Would it have been a better comp, if Central had come in and South had been given the chop, rather than go to a ten team comp? I bet you that old time West Torrens supporters would have thought so.

Even after they won the flag in 1964 it only took them 5 years to win a wooden spoon again. Is that a record in itself?

Was Neil Kerley the only man who could ever change the club's culture?

I'd say South went through a few "better" years, rather than relying on the other clubs getting worse. John Reid had got the Panthers competitive again and they made the finals in 1990 and were around the mark for the next couple of years. Also, South lost a few to the Crows - Smart, Bickley, McIntyre (on and off)

No, Glenelg went from 1st to last in 1 season. There have only been four occasions where a club went from 1st to last in 5 seasons:

Port 1st in 1897, last in 1900
West 1st in 1927, last in 1931
Glenelg 1st in 1934, last in 1935
South 1st in 1964, last in 1969

I thought I saw West play a Grand Final against Central in 2003 and a Prelim in 1998. Not sure about 91 being the last time we had a decent crack at the flag.

As for players lost to the AFL in 91 and other clubs providing the bulk of the talent, I think we might have contributed more than our fair share in that and the following year or two. Rehn in the ruck, Modra at full-forward and Ricciuto in the mid-field might have ben useful.

Apart from that, thanks for your good wishes.

Sadly, the club is a basket case - player dissent, adminsitration in turmoil and no hope for the future...

Nukarni-definition= no idea. Club has stable admin and board,no player dissent, the meeting with players and coach to ensure all understood that the club is going to continue to play our youth and therefore some of our losses albeit poor will not deter the club and the players from this understanding of developing from within. Club finances OK, increased junior programs in area with the future looking sound. This year will be a tough one but the club made that point to members at the beginning of the year to expect some disappointments but also plenty of positives as the season progresses.

Darley, your response doesn't surprise. What will is South pulling itself out of the abyss - something it hasn't managed to do for more than a decade. Your success is measured by premierships; is it too much to expect the Panthers might achieve their first in 40 or so years in 2009?

Sorry but South have only won one premiership in the last 70 years, 1964, the previous being in 1938.
It was a bit selective for you to count from now, back to the year after Sturts flag in 1976 but not count back to the year after Souths in 1938.

I hope you don't but will you be able to turn it around like Sturt did?

This time last year I would have said yes, your chances are good.
