Not sure what to take out of the match...... Norwood had about 8 on their bench and rotated frequently, we had 4, reduced to 2 in the second quarter after injuries.

Got run over in the last quarter by a Norwood team which looked pretty good.

Bring on the season.......... We have played 22 in each of our trial matches with other teams playing a lot more. Who knows where we are at - apart from in need of someone who can kick the ball........ again!

I must admit though - Jay Cheep has little man's syndrome! Started another push and shove again tonight. He has become an icon to us vertically challenged Eagles supporters..... I love him already.

Catch a bus or walk. It ain't hard. Then you can drink. GO LEGS.

Rick I would need to catch a few buses to get to Norwood oval from Taperoo mate .much easier to drive even with clipsal on .

Train, bus, drink. I used to do that shit to get to Salisbury by 7.30 in the morning and that was to go to work (minus the drinking that is LOL), not go out on the turps and watch footy. Never driven a car in my life and not about to start.

I went down to the game. What a strange one it was.

Norwood kicked the opening goal against the general flow of play and even at this stage it looked like they would get smashed. The Eagles then proceeded to have something like the next 14 shots on goal to lead 5.9 to 1.0 (or something like that) the eagles then put the kids on the ball and Norwood slowly got into the game before a late burst just before half time tied the game up.

Eagles couldn't buy a goal for the next 40 minutes but it was still neck and neck when up stepped Simon Phillips to finally provide Norwood with a goal kicker and they ran away with the game.

From an AFL point of view

Salter - absolutely dominated but has been taking lessons on how not to kick at the power and from near on 20 possessions from full forward kicked something like 1.7 and all were pretty easy shots for Salter.

Redden - has come a long way over the summer, only about 6 touches but showed that he has something to work with. Starting to cover the ground a lot better and with time his team mates will use him more.

Broadbent - stuck in a back pocket for most of the night but looked good when he spent 15 minutes up on the wing. He has bulked up quite a bit and will be a player, about 15 touches for the night.

Thomas - hard at it but handballs way to much, about 20 touches with only a handfull of kicks. I really dont think he is AFL quality but he will dominate SANFL

Daveron and Colbert were very good very early for the Eagles, McKenzie well he is to good them. Salter dominated up forward but couldn't convert, at least he hand a couple off.

I haven't got a team sheet in front of me and to be honest I cant think of a norwood player that played well. The noticeable thing after half time was they ran harder both ways through the midfield and were there to support each other all night. I would think most of them got there fair share of the ball but no one stood out to me. AhChee is an excellent user of the ball but does not get much of it, if he can start to get it more than 15 times a game Norwood will be hard to beat. Phillips kicked 4 goals with 3 coming in the last bit of the game when Norwood were well and truely on top.

P.Fiachi ? (No 9) stretchered off just before half time, apparently he has a crook shoulder, huge collision where the sound of flesh on flesh in the marking contest was about as loud as I have heard for a marking contest. Friendly fire fron an Eagle running into the pack with the flight of the ball.

McGuinness was great, Gallagher good too. Littler 3 goals, hello? Ah Chee isn't that good of user of the ball IMO. Kick is a bit shaky but played well tonight. Phillips was truly the junk time specialist tonight.

And yes, that contest when they collided was huge. The sound was extremely loud.

Headed down to Coopers Stadium tonight to catch the Redlegs and Eagles do battle in their last trial games before season 2009 kicks off next week.

WESTBROOK BACK WITH A BANG

RESERVES:

Eagles: 5.3 8.5 14.9 18.12 = 120
Norwood: 2.2 4.3 5.3 8.5 = 53

GOAL KICKERS:

Eagles: Westbrook 8, Graham 3, Grocke 2, R.Fiacchi, Fitzgerald, Papps, Jolly, Hank 1

Norwood: Pfitzner, Muster 2, Douglas, James, Chadwick, O’Malley 1

BETTER PLAYERS:

Eagles: Westbrook, Daniel, Fitzgerald, Graham, Grocke, Polec, McEntee

Norwood: Baust, Pfitzner, James, Young, Thomas

David Westbrook proved he will be a handy addition back in an Eagles jumper in season 09, kicking 8 goals in a spectacular display from full forward in the early game at Coopers Stadium. Back at the club after a year away from the SANFL, playing over on the Yorke Peninsula to help with the family farm, Westbrook’s best on ground performance and 8 goal haul will surely secure him a spot in the league side for round 1, especially considering usual full forward Mark Passador will be missing from action with a hamstring concern.

Woodville West Torrens reserves side proved far too strong in the early game for the Redlegs and with a few league experienced players in the side, the visitors ran away with a comfortable 11 goal victory. Adam Grocke made a welcome return for the Eagles with a solid performance at CHF and presented extremely well taking solid pack marks. Setting up team mates and kicking a couple of goals. Promising youngster Nathan Daniel was superb playing on ball for the victors while he had great support at half back, up forward and on the ball by usual goal sneak Craig Fitzgerald.

Brad Graham also impressed for the Eagles playing off a wing and ended up bagging 3 majors to be amongst the better players while James McEntee provided good run playing from defence. For the Redlegs, Trevor Baust worked really hard playing the game on the ball and Tumby Bay recruit Nigel James had a couple of promising moments in the ruck and up forward. Former Centrals big man Dylan Pfitzner impressed playing across centre half forward and sharing the ruck duties, whilst also kicking 2 goals. The Eagles set the win up with a very strong third term, kicking 6 goals to 1 with of course Westbrook the star up forward with 8.

The Norwood Football Club put behind them a week of controversy to cap off the last of their trial games with a 22 point victory over the Eagles under lights at Coopers Stadium. Only a day after receiving news from the SANFL that the club would be fined $50,000 and be banned from recruiting in 2010 for Salary Cap breaches, the Legs head into next Friday night’s season opener against the Port Magpies on a winning note, albeit not a convincing won, while both sides will be keen to work on their goal kicking skills.

With high profile recruits Bryce Campbell and Kris Massie lining up in the side for the first time in ’09 the Redlegs got the perfect start to the game kicking the first major. From there, the Eagles had control of the contest in the early stages, jumping out to a 23 point lead at the first change. It should have been a lot more with the inaccurate Eagles kicking 8 behinds to go with their 5 goals, but this would end up being the theme of the night for both sides with goal kicking practice sure to be high on the agenda for the respective coaches during the week.

Despite having experienced Norwood defender Brett Zorzi as his opponent, young Nick Salter was proving a handful for the man known as Zorba. If not for his poor conversion in front of goal, young Power listed Salter could have ended up with a bag of 6 or 7. As it was, he finished the night with 1 goal, 6 behinds with this certainly an area of his game he’ll need to address if he wants to play at the next level. He certainly wasn’t the only culprit contributing to high tally of behinds with Sydney Swans recruit Dean Terlich kicking 2 goals 7 for the Redlegs.

The Redlegs were letting themselves down in the early stages of this game with poor skills and decision making errors contributing to quite a few turnovers. This was also a result of the pressure being applied by the Eagles who were very impressive early with their attack on the ball and the body. Jay Jeep proved once again he will add some much needed grunt to Ron Fuller’s midfield brigade while young Sam Daveron was a shining light for the Eagles finding plenty of space, using the ball well and contributing to the scoreboard.

After kicking 5 goals to 1 in the second term the Legs managed to only trail by 1 point at the long break despite being dominated by the opposition. After half time, Trevor Hill’s men were more effective with their disposal by hand and foot, despite the occasionally ‘comical’ turnover. Skipper James Gallagher showed he will be in for a great year, again winning plenty of the ball and the ever improving Brendan Littler was superb playing off a wing, kicking 2 solid goals for the game.

The second half became more a battle of which side was the most inaccurate with the home side peppering the goals, including a last term that had 13 scoring shots to 4. Whilst Norwood’s conversion resulted in 5 goals 8, a purple patch from the diminutive Simon Phillips helped set up the win. The former Swan kicked 2 majors and set up a team mate for another all in the space of a few minutes and despite a couple of late consolation goals to the Eagles, the game was over.

Luke Jarrad was in great form on the ball and providing run across half back for the visitors, while Zac Hier kept Jamie Vlatko well held for most of the night. Meanwhile for the Legs, Jessie Aish made a welcome return to the league side having a couple of solid moments, including a freakish goal from deep in the pocket of the south western corner. Tom Corbett looks to have found his place for the Eagles playing across half back while the very talented David Trotter again had a good game for the Legs.

The home side came away from the contest without any major injury concerns however the Eagles will have to deal with a possible shoulder and/or cheeckbone injury to Robert Fiacchi. He was stretchered from the field after a heavy collision in a contest with brother Peter and Norwood's Dean Terlich. Dale Symmons hobbled off late in the game with what looked to be a corked knee and ice on his troublesome elbow while Nick Salter came off late in the game complaining of a bit of hamstring tightness but didn't look too serious.

Norwood will head into the blockbuster season opener against Port next Friday night confident that their pre season has showed some promising signs despite not having their best side on the park any given week. With the likes of Doyle, Lower, Lee, Puopolo, Kite and Jericho to still come back in, the Legs will still have some improvement in them. For the Eagles, they head into their season opener against Central Districts, in a clash under lights at Hamra Homes Oval next Saturday night with a couple of injury concerns. Mark Passador looks to still be a few weeks away with a hamstring and Jarrad Wright is still recovering from shoulder surgery last year.

Interesting that you have Heir in the best players. Did well in the contest and beat his opponent but his disposal at times was shocking and resulted in a couple of goals for Norwood.

Terlich doesn't look to have anything special about him other than he is a natural forward, he gets himself in the right place at the right time (a bit like Tex Walker, just not that class) so he is going to continue to be dangerous. He is quite athletic but not one that will turn your head. Opposition supporters will get frustrated with their backman for letting him get the ball because Terlich wont look that great but he will get the job done.

Fair enough comment about Hier, I just thought he did a good job as the main key defender and held Vlatko well...

As for Terlich, I tend to disagree ith you there. I'm not sure whether you are basing your judgement purely on the game you saw last night but I have seen the Legs in 3 of their 4 trials this year (I didn't see the Sturt game and I don't think Dean played in that one) and trust me, I think he will be one of the best recruits in the SANFL for season 2009.

You say he seems a natural forward but I think he seems more like a natural talent and I have seen him play both on the ball and up forward. From all the games I've seen of him, his ability to win the hard ball is excellent, he has a great set of hands and generally has good skills. Last night he kicked 2 goals 7 behinds so although the conversion was shocking, that's pretty good for a small forward to have 9 scoring shots.

I think he brings a little grunt to the Redlegs as he crashes packs hard (as proved last night when he was involved in the contest that saw Rob Fiacchi stretchered off for the Eagles) holds his feet well and has that ability to break tackles easily. You know, I think if you watch him closely you will see a very strong resemblence to another Dean that played in the SANFL. Personally, I think Terlich looks and plays a lot like former Bloods and Roosters player Dean Howard. I'm sure Legs fans would be happy if he ends up being a player like Dean Howard.

With my Terlich comment it was more that he does not possess the explosive pace of a Waterhouse, The body strength of a Salter, The Height of Walker, or a massive leap.

Norwood supporters will rave about the things that you commented on but opposition supporters will think that their player just didn't tackle him hard enough, go in hard enough.

He is just one of those players who is not quick but not slow, a good mark but not great, good at ground level but not flash, not super skilled but he has good skills. Nothing in the package says this guy is very good but when you put it all together he doesn't really have a weak part to his game. A case of the whole package being greater than the sum of the parts.

Yes I like him.

Cheers for the updates guys. Hopefully that aggression of Cheep is channelled in a positive way and doesn't end up giving away free kicks. Poor discipline cost us a finals spot last year (namely the free kick given to North on the 3rd quarter siren at Woodville Oval, which cost the game).

Unusual to hear Salter kick 1.6. Not really concerned as generally his goal kicking is a real strength to his game and would expect last night to become a one off rather than the norm.

whatever commented that when put on the wing for 15 mins Broadbent played well, but otherwise was stuck in a back pocket. Unlike Petrenko last year, I hope Broadbent is released to play more of an attacking role further up the ground more frequently.

Can't believe Rob Fiacchi has been injured again.

poor kicking for goal cost the Eagles the trial game

Salter's accuracy is usally his strength

better to get it right in a trial than one for points

Allmond on the wing is an impressive youngster

The Fiacchi brothers clash to spoil a mark was right in front of where I was sitting.the sound was sickening as was the result Brother taking out Brother .

Eagles looked the better team in the first quarter but once again the forward line was the weakest link .How many points that should have been goals and forwards not wanting to attempt shots on goals that resulted in turnovers .And this week the wind was not a factor.

Round one should see the inclusion of Westbrook and Grocke I hope.

Terlich is quality. He is a natural footballer. He isn't overly quick but he moves well and gets in the right spots. Great pair of hands, is courageous, and not only can he play up forward but he can move into the midfield if required. He's a better version of Phillips who continues to disappoint.

Salter looked scared to kick at goal from the goal line (between the point and goal line)From what I can recall 2 or 3 attempts went to the Norwood defenders from short kicks. To rub salt into the wounds same kick at Norwoods goal front resulted in a goal.
Not happy with the Forward line .
Broadbent had trouble taking or spoiling marks in the backline and Luke Jarrad in the Backline is always a losing move.sorry to say that but we as a club do not win games with luke down back.

Salter looked amazing at times last night, unstoppable. His finishing in front of goal was horrendous though; how he missed that one from about 10 metres out on the slightest of angles is beyond me. He could boot 5 a week at this level IMO.
