I think we should increase to 10 teams.

A Country team comprising Pt Lincoln, Whyalla, Pt Pirie could hold their own in the SANFL given a few seasons.

Supporters wouldnt mind travelling to say Pt Pirie if that is where the new team was based, its about a 2 hour drive, once a season to watch their team play. It would be good for the country towns economy every second week.

Country zones would have to be changed, thats unavoidable, the better country footballerswould not have to move into the 'big smoke' as to speak.

Think it through properly and you have a win, win situation for all.
I wish my remembering was as good as my forgetting

A tenth team would actually signify the strength of the league. I believe that the 10th team should be a team from the Mount Gambier area the Western Border comp is one of the strongest in the state and would draw players from competitions such as Western Border, Mid South East and Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara Leagues as well as attracting players from strong leagues like the Wimmera FL and some other strong Vic country competitions. As well as this Mount Gambier would have enough local support to sponsor an SANFL license.

I've always thought that the bye is a blight on the competition.

Byes are OK for a midweek netball or volleyball league at the local sports centre. An elite competition like the SANFL should have an even number of teams.

All the best sporting competitions in the world e.g English Premier League, NBA, MLB, NFL wouldn't dream of having an odd number of teams in them.

I know its pie in the sky and Glenelg would kick up a huge stink but my thoughts are similar if it was another similar area but why wouldn't the local government get behind somthing like that?
Could you imagine the huge kick start to an economy like Mount Gambier if hundreds of us ferals were coming down there once or twice a year? Add to that that the local community spirit and the SANFL should subsidise the idea too as suddenly if it was done right you'd probably have an entire country area more interested in SANFL than AFL.
I doubt a local country city council would have the foresight to even think about such a proposal though.
Great to think about though, be it Pt Lincoln, Pt Pirie, the Riverland or Mt Gambier.

Those of you wanting a 10th team in the SANFL may as well leave the porch light on for Harold Holt...

More chance of Harold Holt turning up than us getting a 10th team.

With the imminent implementation ofanother 2 AFL teams the talent pool will be further diminished. Zero chance of 10 teams with you have the GFC around ATM. 8 teams on the other hand....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Merge Centrals and Port Adelaide, closely located, supporters have a bit in common, and it would bring Centrals back to the field! ;)

i duno about having a tenth team as for reason already stated, but if there was a tenth team bought in to the comp would a team at eg Mt barker be good as it is close to most hills teams and it could have a pretty decent zone to recruit from?

I have said this in the past but...

I believe we should combine the SAAFL & The SANFL into divisions & include promotion relegation.

More appropriate now considering the U19 & U17 competitions have dissolved & more players from those pools will enter the player lists in SAAFL clubs.

I have also said that I would like to see a National 2nd tear Competition, similar to the UEFA Cup Competition in Europe, that is;

Grand Finalists from SANFL, WAFL, VFL & the Premiers from NTFL, QAFL, NSWAFL & TAFL = 10 teams, 2 'Conferences', Round Robin format, 1 'Conference' Grand Final, 'Superbowl' Final.

If the above were to occur - AFL would need to sanction it & fund it via their 'grass roots football funding scheme'

Back to the original concept;

What is wrong with a promotion/relegation system?
The SANFL must begin to look to the future in order for our competiton to stay viable.
Ideas such as this (& I am NOT suggesting that this is the answer, only my preferred option) MUST be seriously considered & debated

I am a fan of 'the world game' but SANFL is in my heart (as many of you have witnessed)...
I believe that SANFL, WAFL, VFL are in danger of becoming overtaken in popularity & corporate dollars by 'football'
The time to act is very near, IMHO & the SANFL MUST look at alternative structures within the competition to attract these dollars

Glenelg as the least successful club/years in competition must surely be on the chopping block. South can take their zone and also move to the bay oval.

Well seeing as Glenelg will be publically announcing at their season launch on March 21 the biggest sponsorship deal in SANFL history I don't think they will be folding or merging anytime soon. ;)

<edit> if after the 21st of March someone can correct me on a bigger sponsorship deal in SANFL history I will happily stand corrected but based on the figure quoted to the members at the AGM on Monday night I am unaware of any bigger sponsorhip announcement at SANFL club level.

Im not sure what is the biggest sponsorship deal on a yearly basis but as a total amount i would think Holdens would have pumped a tiny bit of cash into Centrals over the years.

Being a Doggy fan i would not mind merging with say North Adelaide and we could be called the Northern Bulldogs.

What a bout a South and Glenelg merger and call them the Tighers or Pangers.

What about Port Adelaide and Westies and call them the Port Wolves.

Problem with this is facilities.
Alot of clubs would need to spend big to upgrade facilities to a SANFL standard if promoted, hen if they have a bad season and drop back out they wouldn't have the revenue to pay loans for the upgrade.
Also it would dilute the supporter base of many clubs. If you barracked for North lets say, played for Ingle Farm all your life, North drops out and Ingle Farm move up, do you drop your North membership and buy a Ingle Farm membership?
