Went to glenelg primary school. Funny though we played in st.kilda colours and brighton primary were glenelg colours.
used to play against an old brighton high school buddy in john paynter (brighton primary) until we went to the same high school
been with glenelg all my life

My Dad barracked for South so I barracked for South! - One of my best ever memories of my childhood is the one game my Dad took me to see when he was well enough to do so - South vs Torrens at Thebarton Oval, hence why I am also pretty much stoked to see the Eagles back playing the odd game at Thebby!

In later years my Grandfather barracked for Westies, yet as much as I barracked West with him I could not ever turn away from the Panthers - despite wanting to on occassions! I do hope that my kids will barrack for South, but will definatley let them make up their own mind as was my own choice!

Paul Arnold never wore no.4
My Grandfather followed North and use to get his chook feed from Don Lindners business when I was pre-school and my old man followed North as well.
How could a starry eyed kid follow anyone else with "the Don" my 1st hero.

I know this thread is in its early moments, but this is great stuff fellas. This is why we are all passionate about our clubs, because there is a family link and some real tribal passion. Long live the SANFL, long live all our clubs.

Family connection for me too, my dad was a Port supporter, and the family link stemmed back to 60 or so years ago when my great grandmother's brother was involved in an off field capacity with the club.

Great Grandma lived across the rd from Alberton Oval and used to board country players back in the Fos era. Was a life member and had a number of Port people at her funeral. Grandfather was a trainer. Cousin played at the club. So yeah...not much choice for anyone else really.

quite simple really....I grew up in Elizabeth... so i chose Glenelg.......
It was because my mum got me a beanie when i was about 5, and although i didnt know anything about footy.....i stuck by the colours and by the time i got older i was hooked by the black and gold..........

But what about my father in law....he married my mother in law because she lived opposite the main gate to the Liverpool football club in England. he said it was easier to get to the soccer....

PS: my first game that i went to was against Centrals at Elizabeth in 1979....we lost by 5 points.....funniest thing i ever heard was someone calling Wilbur Wilson a Pommie Bastard..........

My allegience comes from my dad's side of the family. Dad was born in Elizabeth before the dogs were formed, and his parents were fans from when the dogs formed. I believe they actually supported them even in the reserves competition. My mum's side emigrated to Elizabeth from England shortly before the dogs formed so it was pretty well decided. Especially since I lived within a decent walk of the ground until I was an adult.

When we moved to Adelaide from YP, my father advised my older brother and I that we should barrack for the local team, which was Souths. Dad, Mum and three older sisters were all Port but with the benefit of hindsight, I guess he did what most blokes from the bush did and advised as above.

What really cemented it was getting taken to the footy by a man who lived nearby ( I was mates with the son) who was South through to the core. He was a returned POW from Changi who pretty much kept to himself but lived through his footy team. Who could begrudge him. He didn't get much joy out of Souths either but I guess he lived his life to stick by your mates.

I started with South and will finish with South. Good luck to all you other blokes.

Like a lot of people my connection is family. Mt great great Grandmother's brother played for Medindie in the 1880's. Her grandson - My Grandfather (mum's dad) grew up in North Adelaide, and his cousin played for North in the early 1900's. My mum grew up in Medindie and I grew up in Broadview (3 blocks from heaven). I was even born at the Memorial Hospital which is in North Adelaide.

I've barracked for Sturt since I can't remember. And I have no idea why either. I'm think it was because my favourite colour was blue, and I happened to watch Big Replay in the mid to late 70's and saw Sturt. But I don't know for sure.

I can't remember the 76 GF, but I can remember the 78 GF. A question, were they live on TV?

BTW, Dad barracked for Torrens, uncles and aunties; Port, Port, South, Glenelg, Norwood

Family -
Grandfather was a Torrens man as a result so was my Dad which is where it started for me, although i have now been an Eagles supporter longer that i was a Torrens supporter.
All of Mum's side of the family were Westies fans as they lived in the west end except for one of her uncles who played in in Torrens last premiership, so a bit of a connection there to.
Trust the process.

Good topic.

My story is really my Mother and Grandmother supported South. They grew up with her family in the Clovelly Park area coming down from Broken Hill. As a kid I grew up in a "die hard" Glenelg area. Our house was 4 houses down from the Kernahan's. Glenelg were successful but I just hated the Bays. Just could not relate to them for some reason. Think it was the players at the time and going to school with all Glenelg kids. (It killed me to wear a Glenelg jumper playing under 17's!!!)
I can remember being the only kid a school footy training with a South Adelaide jumper on and getting heaps from my teammates. (as any South supporter would know what I am talking about!!)
I remember catching the train with my South scarf from Oaklands station and going into Adelaide Oval and watching them get defeated 28 times straight, holding a tin to get money when they were about to fold. (S.O.S - Save Our South) and drinking lemonade and raspberry at the St. Mary's clubrooms with my Pop and Uncle and meeting with the players after the game.
What is sad is I have not seen any success with South and neither did my Mother who passed away a week before the final of 2006 when we knocked out Port Adelaide. I dont prey much but I remember I looked up at the sky when South were down in that final and saying "Come on Mum get them over the line". They did and at the end of that game I was in tears. Sadly to say we did not go on from there (typical South...they give you hope but it vanishes very quick!!)
I still hope one day they will get their sh*t together and win a Grand Final. I maybe an old man then, but it surely will be one of the greatest days of my life... :)
Is out of change.....thanks Cambridge Clarrie!!!

Interesting topic.
I Grew up in what was then South territory, St Marys, about a decent torpedo punt from Panther Park. When I was 6 years old South defeated Port in the '64 grand final. My father despite taking me to most matches during the season decided not to take me to the GF. ..he remarked at the time-
"there will be plenty of other times..."- he hasnt forgiven himself and I havent forgiven him.
My brother and I used to fetch the footys for the players when they were having goal kicking practice. Bill Bennett stopped and had a kick with us one night after training and that sold me on South. I had my first legal drink in the licensed clubrooms on South Rd opposite Mitsubishi. I now have a fair distance to travel but rarely miss a game.
In answer to the question "why do you barrack for your club?"- all I can say is I'm very patient. 8)

I was 6 in 78, I'm fairly sure i can recall watching that game live on tv, and its probably actully the first grand final i can remember watching live on the box.

As to when they started showing the grand finals live on tv in SA, i'm not certain, but I'm sure someone like Leaping Lindner or Adelaide Hawk would probably know when this was :)

Oh dear your from Moonta?

Same story my old man followed Norwood cause of Moonta being the same colours (despite my grandfather being a Sturt man), anyway while I grew up in Gladstone my Dad and I used to drive the 400km round trip most Saturdays just to go and see Norwood play in the late 70's, he used to smuggle a fold up stool in his bag so I could stand on it and see the game as it was the days of shoulder to shoulder on the hills....

anyway i was Norwood until I was 9 and then we moved back to town and lived withing a few hundred metres of Glenelg Oval and I went to Glenelg Primary.....took me about 6 months but I turned....for the better! :D much to Dads disgust!

Grand father (born in 1896) and all his siblings were North supporters (not sure about his dad, he wasn't young when my grandfather was born so probably not, he would have been before SANFL and living 250km from Adelaide)

Dad and his 5 siblings were all North

If I had come out anything bur North I would have been pushed straight back in.

Both younger brothers started life as North supporters, both folded to peer group pressure in mid to late '70's when North wern't going so well, one switched to Norwood, the other to Sturt..............have never forgiven either of them.

Mrs Ian was a Norwood supporter but soon realised that wasn't going to work, 16 years a North supporter now.

Both kids are North through and through.
