IIRC in 1978, 1984 and 1991 one of grand finalists weren't even in the top 5 at this stage of the year.

By my calculations all of the top 3 could still miss the finals....

tassie, you are full of it my friend

its taken you almost 7000 posts to work that out???
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I will have to take a note of this thread and bring it back up in September.

As far as I am concerned our seaon is going alomg just fine.

We always gradually build our form and fitness in the second half of the season and the fact that we are placed third after the first half of ordinary (by our standards) footy is a bonus.

Am looking forward to playing Glenelg and Sturt acouple of times each before the finals.
We used to be good :-(

Based on what I saw on Sunday, Sturt will miss.

Norwood showed in the first half how to play against Sturt. Norwood all year have had fade outs and thats how Sturt won. Norwood dropped their intensity which has happened all year bar a couple of games.
Glenelg already achieved this by playing at that intensity for all 4 quarters and won at Unley.
Central will no doubt do the same come finals time.

But, as always, come round 23 my opinion will probably change.

Interesting observation HeartBeatsTrue. Based on what I saw on Sunday, Norwood showed in the first half how to play against any of the top 3 sides. Their intensity was superb, and their ball movement was quick into the forward lines, allowing Walker to be one out against his opponent. Their lead at half time was well deserved.

In the end, I thought Sturt won because they absorbed the best the Legs could throw at them in the first half, and came out after half time with greater intensity and work rate - something that both Glenelg and Centrals have shown this year that they can do as well....

There is no doubt if the Legs had played with that sort of intensity against the Bays a few weeks back, the scoreline would have been a lot less lopsided.

I don't know about you, but the 70 odd point loss to the Eagles back in '06 would have to be considered playing bad in a GF  :( :(

Of course neither of the GF losses in 2002 or 2006 had anything to do with Sturt and WWT playing well, and everything to do with the 'Dogs 'playing bad'

In 2006 the Eagles were the best team in the comp and we made the finals after an appalling start to the year. We overperformed if anything.

2002 we had dominated the comp and beaten Sturt evry time we had played them ( about 4 times from memory). We then put in a shocker in the one that counts.

Well MST,

In part, that is correct, as the Dogs were clearly the best side in the comp in 2002 beating Sturt in all 4 outings prior to the GF and despite an average start to 2006, managed to do enough to get to the final day again in 2006. While I have no problem in admitting that yes, we were simply beaten by the better team on the day, the fact that we did play as bad as we did certainly attributed to the final results in some ways.

By no means am I trying to take anything away from the great wins by Sturt and the Eagles but think the two respective Dogs sides only have themselves to blame for the way that they let their oponents play and to be beaten in the manner that we were. Fot those that remember, the clash with Damian Hicks and Barnaby French in the first term, seeing Hicksy out for the rest of the game, was probably the turning point in the 2002 decider as we just struggled with lack of height and experience down back. Obviously Sturt were good enough to kick the winning score so deserved to win and with pretty good performances from Matty Powell (Jack Oatey medalist), Frenchy, Mattner, Brodie Atkinson and the like, they deserved to win the flag (argh, that was hard to say !!??)

I don't have much to say about 2006 other than the Eagles were just too good on the day, with our midfield getting smashed, especially by Skipworth, hence the Jack Oatey and our forward line the most disfunctional I have ever seen it in this decade. I am the first to admit that in both the games mentioned our opposition on the day were simply too good, but again, I will add the point that our poor performance was, in some ways, the reason we lost... I rue these 2 losses, even more so thinking how awesome it would have been to win in '02 and '06, meaning we would have had created an all time SANFL record of consecutive premierships. Ah, it's nice to live off "what ifs" isn't it !!!??? "What if" we win the flag again this year, that would be great wouldn't it !!??

GO U DOGGIES...
