A couple of years ago they trialled giving the boundary umps some powere in a North v West trial and it was the best umpiring exhibition Ive seen in 20 years.
IMHO Id like 2 field umpires with perhaps 2 or 4 boundary umps having similar powers to linesmen in soccer. (ie only calling obvious frees the central umps miss)

This has been for me one big problem I have noticed at Woodville Oval. Not sure I have noticed at other grounds .But the umpires tend to stand and look into the sun .And the amount of missed frees to both teams on the ground is shocking!!

Centre Bounces were interesting last week one ump could not bounce the ball and another came in from the other side when bouncing.
Interpretations seem to differ last week one umpire kept changing his mind as to what was holding the ball.at one stage it was if you dragged the ball and 10 seconds latter the same umpire said it was not.
Mind you his mates would not call anything holding the ball.
Thats footy no other ball game has so many interpretations like ours does.

That's right, mickyj, interpretations vary from week to week - have a look at the North match before the State game and then that match. Holding the ball was paid only twice during the Woodville game, then at Adelaide the following week it was the mode of free kick paid the most!

I think that two field umpires only should be looked at seriously, and if there is a worry to the behind the play incidents, the 4 boundary umpire system that Wedgie suggested, this would be perfect for it. Plus, it would reduce the risk of heat related illnesses/injuries that have come up before - the boundary umpires only need to patrol half of the oval.

I'll go with a couple of oldies - how about Rick Kinnear and Laurie Argent - maybe throw in Mick Abbott with either of those two. Geez you'd have a couple of game killers there.

I know Laurie Argent quite well personally. I played fastpitch softball with both him and his son Tim for a few years...

I used to love the garbage recycling campaign and advertisements he did in the old footy Budget... "Give Me Heaps" was the slogan I think...

Laurie is a Doggies fan and I sat with him at a few games last year, must admit haven't bumped into him as yet in 2008, and he often showed frustration at the poor level and execution od interpretation from todays modern day umpires...

Feel his same bloody frustration pretty much every week now, don't we all ???

I actually happen to see Rick Kinnear at the WWTFC every so often I believe he's a long time fan of the club and is still a member more than likely. Quite often at the match day lunches. Not a bad bloke but a shit of an umpire.

Whoever that umpire was, was the worst umpiring performance I've ever seen. He kept on accidentally blowing his whistle and then having to make a decision.

By the sounds of it both sides had problems with the umpires today.
My biggest gripe is still them standing and shielding their eyes from the sun and making decisions they can not see.A kicking in danger awarded to south today resulting in a goal .was never kicking in danger .

I hate it when the umpires just guess because they are either unsighted or are influenced by the crowd or the opposition player. And how often do you see a free kick given just after they have missed an obvious one -an even-upperer

Wedgie, I agree 100% with you. 2 central umpires & 4 boundary umpires, with the powers to give decisions ONLY if asked for an interpretation of an event/indescretion.

Toby Medlin had a Glenelg game earlier this year. Maybe North but I can't be sure but someone earlier stated it's not the free's he does pay it is the one he misses or dosen't pay.

That day even the Radio commentators stated that he was out of his league that day.

Yeah that was me PUNTER, regarding Toby Medlin's below par umpiring abilities...

Actually watched him closely the last few weeks, in particular from the SA v Tassie Under 18's game at the State League game and as recently as the weekend just gone in the U/18's v U/20's State Game. I can assure you mate, nothing has changed. Fingers crossed he doesn't do Central's game Saturday...

I think we all have to agree about the standard of umpires. Each year the standard hardly improves, yet we are told that they are making less incorrect decisions, so are we reading from the wrong rule book? They should come back to 2 Field and extend to 4 boundary umps, they have 3 running the boundary now, no one will notice the extra man in white at all, the money they save from 1 ump in the middle will be able to split among the 4 boundary, giving them a bit more for all their efforts.

The men in white at todays match at Prospect did a pretty good job, some obvious mistakes at times, the rest of the time were hardly noticed, except for Williams, who should think about throwing the ball up a bit higher at ground stoppages, that way he could give both ruckmen am even chance at the ball, they still have not got the play-on to advantage rule worked out properly, at times its just let go and the games goes on, another time the same thing happens and the ball is brought back, depends on which side you support it seems if they get it right.

I shouldnt go on about the umpires, as nothing we do, will change the way they are coached and instructed .
I wish my remembering was as good as my forgetting
