Went to this game at Adelaide Oval this morning and saw the State Under 20's comfortably take care of Brenton Phillip's Under 18 side...
From memory, final scores were...
Under 20's: 20.13 = 133
Under 18's: 8.6 = 54
Didn't take down the goal kickers or better players but from memory, it would have been something like this...
Under 20's:
Trent Grosser was too big and strong at FF kicking 4 or 5 goals. Ryan McInnery won plenty of the ball and uses it well, skipper Angus Lally was good and kicked a couple of goals as well and super quick Kriston Thompson was good in a back pocket and across half back. Louis Hadden won plenty of the ball as well and Josh Taylor was pretty imposing at CHF, kicking 3 or 4 I think. Ashley Duncan bounced back well after having 3 first quarter goals kicked on him Kerran Hall looked dangerous when he was up forward and in the ruck.
Under 18's:
Hamish Hartlett, for me, was clearly his sides best and won plenty of the ball and uses it so well on both sides of his body. He kicked a superb running goal from outside 50 and would have certainly impressed the dozen or so AFL talent scouts I saw at the ground. Damien Hynes, who hadn't played in any of SA's games as yet, did his selection chances no harm in an impressive effort from from full forward kicking 3 first quarter goals and ended up with 4 or 5 for the day. Skipper Scott Blessing was good and his diminuitive deputy, Sam Mardling, battled hard all day.
For Doggies fans interested in how our clubs representatives went from both sides, here is a quick note on them individually...
Louis HADDEN: Won plenty of the ball playing on the wing, through the middle and resting at half forward. Probably let himslef down a couple of times with his skill excecution but I would have had him in the best half dozen players for the Under 20's side. Had the pleasure of meeting and sitting with Louis' parents, who are very nice people to chat with, after they spotted my Doggies jumper and started chatting...
Luke BARMBY: Probably not his best game ever, but did start the game on a half forward flank which is a position he is not really used to, normally playing across half back for Centrals. Got a few possesions as the game went on and also spent some time in the middle, as well as on the bench. Would think that Luke will be looking forward to getting back across the half back line next week against Glenelg at Elizabeth...
Ashley DUNCAN: One of my favourite players to watch, Ash had his hands full at the start if the game with his opponent kicking 3 first quarter goals but he bounced back when shifted further up the field to a half back flank. By his own admission, he probably didn't play his best game ever, but still did a couple of nice things and he is the type of player that always gives 110%, no matter what jumper he is wearing...
Damien HYNES: Played his first game in the SA jumper for the Under 18's side and was very impressive playing out of a forward pocket and from the goal square. Kicked 3 first quarter goals and showed he has a great strength, a clean set of hands and is a booming kick. Ended up with 4 or 5 for the game and I would not be suprised if the Central's Under 19 player finds himself in the Dogs reserves side by seasons end...
All in all, it was a good game of footy to watch with both sides playing well in patched throughout the course of the game. The bigger and older bodies of the Under 20 players proved to be the difference at the end of the day and 5 or 6 goal to none 2nd term set the win up for the team led by Glenelg's reserves coach, Michael Godden. Skills by both sides were scrappy on occassions but there was still quite a few impressive passages in play put on display by both sides.
