It's been said many times - good recruiting zone, good finances, long term lease on the ground - so why merge? Kick the board out, blue and white said that the members have the final say, so have it!

Absolutely , I am now getting tired of hearing South supporters whinging about their club . Go and merge with North , their board apparantly stuffs things up all the time as well  If you South supporters are so passionate about your club do something about it . If not , how can you continue to complain . Call a special AGM and make things change.

Here is a good stat to research Spelly!

How many time has the board been kicked out because of discontent by the members at South and replaced? The current board consists largely of ex players who arrived into the positions by that very scenario and one might suggest that the club is currently in a worse postion as a result!

I do agree with your sentiment though. What I would like to see happen in a positive sense is John Reid and John Schneebichler voted into the most senior positions on the board, preferably with a ticket of people that between them that they think can do the job. Yet the chances of that occuring are something like the same as the club winning the rest of its matches and the premiership this year! ...

We're not too far off 10 flags Wedgie, not bad considering we are one of the "youngest" clubs in the League

Schneebichler is one of the true champions of the South Adelaide Football Club, along with Mark Naley he was easily the best player to come out of the club in the time that I have been supporting the side. Many times he got injured in a game and played on anyway, he was in my mind just one of those legendary players that come along only ever occassionally in the life of a Football Club. If we could get what was his passion injected into the board of the club that could only be a good thing for us!

Great passion , he left to play for Glenelg. Mate I dont want to sound rude here , but your comment about playing on with injury is exactly the mentality your club has. So what , all clubs have players that play with injuries , thats nothing unique to South. This seems to be a wide spread attitude amongst supporters and club , you seem to accept mediorcrity and don't seem to understand what it takes to be a football club.

And Schneebichler was a very good player but if he goes down as one of your champions that says a lot about your club. Jimmy Deane is a champion as is Naley.

You probably are better equipped to come up with that answer than me. ;)

Who are these past officials considering leaving the club? Could they be the answer? Obviously they don't like the situation as much as you and other members.

Sojourner wrote:I have heard much the same rumours in recent days, we were given the impression that a letter would be forthcomming to members this week to explain the situation. I have recieved nothing at all and I assume that is the case for the rest of the membership.

I feel very much at the cross roads at this point in time. For every year that I can remember we have had various positives at the start of the season and with a few exceptions every year has been largely a non competitive effort and various excuses are made.

We have sacked the coach several times and it makes no difference at all, likewise the board have been changed over several times and yet again it makes not a scrap of difference.

The club has tried specifically recruiting from the southern zone and has had other years where they have gone out and bought several high quality players and it makes no difference at all to the fortunes of the club.

I could go on and on here, yet I am tipping people familiar with the SANFL scene get the picture!

I am sad to say that if a merger vote was put to me at a meeting I would be voting yes at this stage assuming that it was a fair merger.

Years of a losing culture have simply decimated the South Adelaide Football Club. No doubt in 1990 people were discussing how the club would surely have to improve and be competetive in the future years, yet we all know how that has worked out so far.

The blunt fact is that I just do not feel that the club can be turned around, I feel that 15 years from now there will still be no difference at the club. Souths Admin tell us how proffessional they are and what they are doing to improve the club, yet it is my opinion that we are not the bootlace of some of the SANFL clubs administrations - Central being one glaring example. South are going to keep on trying to be competitive and the other SANFL clubs are only going to continue to keep on doing more of the same. South talk about how we are doing this that and the other that Central have done, yet its a pity then that we were not doing what Central are doing right now as you can live in the past shadow of another successful club and label it improvement.

If we merge with either Glenelg or Sturt our identy will soon become lost as it could only happen as an outright takeover. I strongly doubt any of the other SANFL sides would be even remotley interested in entering into merger discussions, so I cant really see a way forward for the club at this stage. People talk about the rich history of the SAFC, yet the blunt reality is that the last 44 years of that history have been somthing to be largely ashamed of, with the exceptions of some of the individual players that have made themselves legends of the SANFL by what they have put into the club - Mark Naley & John Schneebichler are a couple of good examples.

I would love to go barrack for another SANFL club, yet I once tried to change to my Grandfathers side - West Adelaide and lasted for three matches....

No matter how bad the club is, there is something about actually finally giving up on the club and its colours that you just cant make yourself do. I do think about signing on as a member to Westies and have thought about it a lot lately! Yet where to from here, I just really dont know!

great post Sojourner I can feel the passion and the frustration for your club.

I can't see South folding or merging they have a niche market in the Southern zone that the SANFL wants occupied and they have the $$$$ to survive (unlike 1990) when you looked like folding. The fact that you are based down South make you an unattractive proposition for a merger as the new club wuld have to be based or at least play half its games at Noarlunga (to maintain teh SANFL links to the growth areas of Southern Adelaide) something that as Glenelg supporter I would loathe if the unthinkable happened - it won't.

So whilst You won't IMO fold or merge, at teh same time I cant see you breaking out of the malaise of mediocrity that has engulfed South for as long as I've followed footy - 32 years and in that time I've seen you make the finals seven times.

Thank goodness Cornesy was only their two years so my brief flirtation as a Souths follower (in aaddition to the BAys) as a kid was brief. The relief was palpable for me when he came home.
