No i think he has been a very very solid performer for the dogs late last year and all this year.
Apart from the 14 goals against Norwood his biggest advantage IMHO is that he generally has his best games against the best teams, which is important. Plus he has played well in the big games al la Grand Final 2007, Round 1 vs Port and the ANZAC Day match.
A worthy selection im my opinion but in saying that i don't think he will make the final 21 team.

The SANFL is pleased to announce the following players have been selected in the 2008 West End South Australia State Squad, for the State League clash against Victoria at Adelaide Oval on Saturday 31 May 2008.

State Coach Darel Hart said "The squad is a great blend of youth and experience, and all the players selected have been in fantastic form for their clubs. Last time the two states played it was a very high standard game and there's no reason to think differently this year with the quality of players that have been selected."

The first training session will be at 6.00 pm on Wednesday 7 May at AAMI Stadium.

West End State Squad: (* indicates has previously played for SA)

NORWOOD (0)
NO REPRESENTATIVE

there goes JAS'S happy birthday

Nah Mags...won't spoil my day. I sympathize with any of our players who might have hoped to be in with a chance but I wouldn't have got to see the game anyway and if it means we don't risk injuring our best players in a game that will have no effect on the league standings then that's fine with me.

i]If it was State of Origin we'd be screwed. [/i]

If .. Big word if but its not , it is Sate V State competition , I wonder how South Aussies are in theirs ? Its about the best comp in the land , if it means the best players come here so be it . But it would be nice if the majority wre from SA.

Havelberg deserves his spot. He has shown that he is versatile. Can play both ends of the ground and moves well for a 6ft 3in tall.

You more than anyone should remember him.

Yes, and it's for that reason alone that he's playing.

Absolute BS NFC,

The reason that young Hav is in the initial squad is for every other reasons BUT the fact he kicked 14 against your mob, which you seemed to forget !!?

First of all, THIS YEAR'S sqaud has been selected on performances shown THIS YEAR, not based on past performances in the past...

If this was the case, blokes like Leigh Westhoff would not have gotton a sniff (must admit, a little "pleasantly" suprised he was named though) based on his efforts last year. Would have been lucky to play 5 games but has shown inprovement out of site so far this year... :o

Havelberg has justified his selection this year with consistancy and versatility and proved this by taking strong marks and kicking goals when up forward, but also doing a excellent job to nufily opposition forwards when thrown into defence. 8)

Great to see Andrew Hayes get a spot, would be awesome to see him in the 21 but I'm not 100% sure that he will...

I guess I'm a little suprised that the Gowans twins weren't at leat in the initial squad, I though Harty had a soft spot for them ? I guess James missed the first 3 with suspension and Chris never plays as well when he is in a team without his brother, so I guess it's fair enough then. In what has to be almost certainly their last year of SANFL footy, it just would have been nice to see them in a state jumper one last time but never mind, I'd rather see them in their 7th premiership team than wear a state gurnsey any day of the week, of course...

Naturally, I'm a selfish Doggies fan and really hope that all 6 of our representatives make the final 21 but I reckon we will have the 4 with Thommo, Callinan, Schelly and justifiably Havelberg !! Is anyone keen to have a stab at the starting line up and I assume the 4 interchange (instead of 3) players ??? I will put my version on here later, got to take the missus out for brekkie before she goes off to work for the day...

Will be back on here later this arvo with my attempt at the team and a few other points of discussion...

Have a great day footy fans, good luck to your teams one and all, let's hope the rain stays away for the time being, at least until tonight...

Its an interesting dilemma for selectors in that do they honour the best players 21 in the SANFL this season with state selction or do they pick a team with the best balance and the best oppurtunity to beat the vics. IMHO these are two totally different matters.
Cleary McConnell is the better forward out of him and Havelberg but Havelberg offers different options which are very valuable in a one-off game such as the state game.
At the end of the day Hart is appointed coach to win the state game so he may pick players who are not in the best 40 in the SANFL but players he believes will create the best balance and structure to win the game.
Obviously Chambers is going to be the 'go to man' in the state team so he probably wants a few versatile players that he can rotate in the forward line around Chambers while making them spend some time down back, when needed.
What are your thoughts, should the state team be the best 21 available or the best balanced team availabe?

whufc, clearly you have to play a balanced side because the best 21 would be like the "old state sides" with 5 Centremen and 3 Full Forwards etc and there isnt a Ruckman in our comp thats in the best 21 going around

I watched the first 1/2 today with the State coach and Im sorry Big Phil but the chances of the twins playing are very slim.[and yes he still thinks they are top shelf]

yeah, not many 'locals' is there. Pretty good side on paper though. from a south point of view, no surprise with Torney and great to see Thewlis recognised for 2 or 3 years of pretty solid footy.

Hargraves has to be added at Chambers expense as the state selectors keep reminding us its based on current form.
He's averaging one goal more a game than Chambers. :D
Maybe even Passador?
McConnell is a no brainer, has to be in a pocket for the state team.

And Hargraves gets very little "protection"* from the umpires too

Don't think McKenzie will play in State game.......not because he's not good enough................but won't play.

Surely Treeby is in better form than L. Westhoff.

Some funny selections.. Where's Heath Younie, james Gallagher and Andrew McIntyre, he has been slaying them in defence for the roosters lately. Oh Yeh Harty is coaching, North boys no chance!

Sure has! Very well deserved.

I also think Hargy should be in the squad.
