That may well be home and away - Perth hasn't reached 2500 for a game yet IIRC.

Subiaco and West Perth may be about 250-300 too many if they are for average home crowds as well.

WAFL crowds are a lie. Don't worry about it.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

I thought there should have been more at Thebarton today, but it should be still around 3000, so if that's the case, we'll sneak ahead of South.

Am I right in saying that I thought there would have been more Sturt fans today?

I was standing in front of the brick wall and there were a fair few around me. I always think there are more people at Thebby than they say officially. Must be some holes in the fence somewhere...

I know, you're spot on. I thought there would have been more support for us too, to be honest, but the crowd support was closer than people would come to expect.

After the SANFL broadcast was over I wandered down to Lathlain to catch the 2nd half of Perth v Souths. I'd be amazed if there were any more than 600 people there. There was a bit of noise in front of the bar area but that's about it.

Most importantly, beers are $4.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Perth draws some horribly low crowds - sometimes they barely hit 1000 but once all the volunteers, players, members and little leaguers are added it becomes a standard-fare "approx. 1500" in the Sunday Times and West Australian.

That "approx" thing is disgraceful. It's always made me laugh.

Think of a number and triple it.

It's like the VFA Division 2 crowds from the early 80s. For example, Sunshine would have 2000 in the paper, but that would be 2000 arms and legs (500 people).

Happened a lot in the old National Soccer League

Most WAFL clubs would love to have our average. Even South and Wests average.

This media release from the WAFL.

Interesting Swan Districts head the table for highest WAFL home crowds (2459 per game) which is only ahead of West Adelaide (2097) in SANFL figures. In the SANFL as at end of Rd 7, Eagles are 8th (2664), South 7th (2760) and North 6th (2792).

--------------------------------------------------------

For the fifth week in a row WAFL attendances surpassed those recorded on the corresponding weekend from last season.

On Community Football Weekend, where an estimated 239,000 people attended a grass-roots game, 7806 people attended Round 8 WAFL fixtures.

So far in season 2008, 65,491 people have attended WAFL games, which is an increase of 6.31 percent compared to the figures recorded after Round 8 in 2007.

Add to that a TV audience of 472,500 people after eight rounds, and that makes a total of 537,991 people who have either watched or attended a WAFL game in this, the 150th year of Australian Football.

Those ABC TV ratings mean more people are watching WAFL in WA than those watching State League football in South Australia and Victoria. In WA the average audience after eight rounds is 59,000 per week.

Last weekend’s total attendance was the third highest figure recorded this season and included 2541 people going to Steel Blue Oval, Bassendean to see East Fremantle record their first win of the season by beating Swan Districts, and 2457 fans who went to Subiaco Oval to watch Subiaco and East Perth re-enact the first game played at WA’s Home of Football 100 years ago.

“With no AFL games to attend last weekend, football fans again recognised the value of heading to the WAFL where they can have a kick on the ground and really feel a part of the action,” West Australian Football Commission Director of Football Grant Dorrington said.

“However, our research shows that 50 percent of the community support a WAFL club and it is our constant challenge to get these people to a game.

“Our clubs continue to work at reconnecting with the people in their community and working on strategies to bring these people to the football.”

Swan Districts are leading the stakes when it comes to home ground attendances. From three home games this season the Black and Whites have attracted total crowds of 9834, an average of 2459 per game.

“Swans should be congratulated on their efforts in attracting more people to their games,” Dorrington said.
