Did I read the stats correctly in the Advertiser today ? Did Justin McConnell only have 1 handball and give away 1 free kick for the entire game ? Is that correct, is he that badly down on form ? I know sometimes the stats in the paper can be a long way off the official club stats, that's all.

I've noticed he has been reasonable quiet, for his standards, in recent weeks ? Is he possibly carrying an injury of some sort or is he just going through a form slump of sorts ? I certainly hope he doesn't find form this week against the Dogs, we need him to have another quiet game if we are going to get up, we saw how dangerous he can be the last time we played the Bays at Elizabeth, about a month ago.

Yep, this thread should now be entitled "Will the selection comittee please protect Justin McConnell" :D

Nah one more week. Two weeks ago he had 29 touches and was all over the field. Grima is cramping his style :) .

He had 3 handballs, not 1.

The 33% accuracy rate is unfortunately about par for the Advertiser statisticians...

So did he actually go the whole game without getting a kick ??? Was he injured or crook or is he just in a bad patch of form like I said previosuly ??? Did he spend anytime on the bench at all ???

Yeah Big Phil he did. Spent the usual rotation time on the bench but no more than usual. His stats were 3 handballs, no kicks, no marks and no tackles. Confidence is definitely down.

His 29 touches a few weeks ago were V Westies playing loose across half back. Since then he's been the target of plenty of attention and it seems to have worked. I think a couple of weeks in the 2's wont hurt him especially as the games dont get easier for us v Dogs, Eags, Port etc. If he cant get a kick v a side I rate as the second easiest for us in the comp then I think he needs to go back and refind some form.

I was kind of being sarcastic (and optimistically hopeful) with my point about him having a run in the magoos but you seem to be serious in that you think it is a relaistic possibility and might actually happen yeah ?

he's not in any form at all at the moment

a run in the 2's picking up 40 odd possessions and confidence will help

Nah, stick Macca across the half-back line and let him create our run out of defence...he's guaranteed to get touches and regain some much needed confidence.

Underestimate Macca at your peril CDFC.

Yeah, that's fair enough to say give him a run in the 2's but will Mark Mickan and the coaching staff really drop him ??? One wouldn't think so, I think playing him off a wing or half back like TB said would be the better option. I, and many other Doggies fans, would prfer him to play in the early game but I highly doubt that would happen ???

Interesting to watch footy classified tonight. I have read much discussion about Justin's "diving" antics. I have been critical of it in the past. I took note of Bayman's comments re umpires not liking looking silly on the TV... not wanting to get foxed by him... so being especially tough on him.

Gary Lyon tonight spoke about his own career and his own early diving tactics. he was taken aside by his coach of the time and it was explained to him that he had made the umpire look stupid on TV. He'd made a fool of him in front of his peers. He spoke about the umpires talking/conspiring against such players. He was then made to pay the price for some time after.

I think this falls in line with the discussions we have had as to why Justin through rds 8 to 14 was slaughtered by umpiring.

Justin is now in a bit of a rut. It'll be interesting to see how he gets himself out.

Haven't yet seen anything to change my opinion on his appraisal. I never questioned his talent nor his ability to put in stats to be jealous of. My assertion was based on big games and vital times for the club, and form what I've seen he's simply not done the job, in part I feel, due to his over-reliance of the "soft" option. If he were to work hard, put the team first and go hard at the ball he'd be possibly less successful in minor round games (especially against West!) but would be a far more potent player when Glenelg really need him to fire. Not sure that Glenelg have played any games since that comment where McConnell has done the business when it really mattered.

Grahaml, if he were doing those other things you mentioned and those qualities were naturally part of his game then Juston WOULD have been playing AFL not SANFL. They aren't so we embrace the qualities he does have which have ot this point made him a vital part of the Glenelg side which has rapidly climbed the ladder since Justin walked into Brighton Rd and asked to come out and train. His value to our side is unquestionable (bar last Saturday and I think everyone has an off game). How you can make such judgements after only one round of finals is beyond me. Im very doubtful you see enough of Glenelg to comment accurately. Justin is without doubt a vital cog in our premiership aspirations and one of the reason we draw crowds like we did a few weeks ago. Our fans love him and his passion for kicking a goal. He has added a little bit of fun to it for the guys on the hill. He is not your stereotype footballer. He definitely is different... and **** we love him for it.

Despite not being his usual productive self Justin still attracts the best small defender from the opposition, Sporn (IIRC v North), Torney v South, Zorzi v Norwood who know they have to watch him closely i.e. can't zone off to support the other defenders. No coincidence IMHO that since Justin has been getting greater attention it has freed up Todd Grima and he has averaged 5 goals a game for the last four games.

Who do Centrals concentrate on this week? Grima the man in form or McConnell the man who tore them a new one last time they met....

Still a very important player in our structure J McConnell which is why IMO he shoudn't be dropped.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Spot on...but don't forget Duldig and Kirkby's influence to our forward set-up...the Doggies will have to cover all these blokes.

He will be unavailable for selection in early August anyway.

He's been selected for the Olympic diving squad...

No it wasn't, Fatal is capable of much better quips than that.

One of his worst IMHO....
