Channel 31 and Total SANFL Show in 2007 - SUPPORT IT!

Postby Squawk » Mon Jan 22, 2007 9:01 pm

Last year “Total SANFL” on Channel 31 proved to be a big hit for me as a passionate supporter of the local competition. Why?

1. Chris Kendall and his guest panellists provided insightful analysis of all Friday night and Saturday games and previewed the Sunday games.
2. Who could forget the stakes growing higher each week as Joe Pedler was encouraged to drive forward and kick his first goal in league football?
3. Guests from the clubs, including coaches and players, were always great.
4. We all waited to see if Jars would make an appearance – in vain however!
5. Volunteer Day featured a long time Westies stalwart appearing on the show on behalf of all club volunteers
6. The grand final breakfast show at “Heaven” – all those who went had a blast! The mini-olympics and Brett Backwell doing an appearance with his Magarey Medal (and his eye candy girlfriend in tow as well) were all good fun.
7. The Grand Final footy marathon featured some classic games and highlights the night before the biggest game of the season.
8. The show promoted club functions each week.
9. The show provided a platform for aspiring broadcasters and commentators to strut their stuff
10. The show had a strong relationship with 5RPH – the radio station that broadcast over 50 SANFL games last season.
11. The show screened highlights not just courtesy of the ABC but also courtesy of Pine Lodge Studios.

The 2007 season will prove to be a slightly tougher challenge for the show however because unfortunately the channel is not able to fund the running costs. This will mean that financial support for the show will have to be sought from other areas.

This is the only dedicated SANFL footy show on Adelaide TV. Year one was great and provides a perfect foundation and springboard for an even bigger and better show this season. So who can you lobby for financial support of the show?

1. Write/ring/email your club about your enjoyment of the show and/or your desire to see the show run again in 2007.
2. Write/ring/email the SANFL and see if just a small portion of the squillions of dollars generated by the AFL clubs (of whom the nine SANFL clubs are all equal shareholders) could be directed towards the running costs of the show.
3. Write/ring/email Channel 31 to express your ongoing support of the show for 2007.
4. Mention the show to potential sponsors and advertisers.
5. If you are using John Platten’s printing company, using Pine Lodge Studios for audio-visual work or visiting “At the Toss of the Coin” in Malvern or indeed any other past advertisers and supporters, tell them you are aware of their 2006 support of the show.
6. Tell any club coaches/players/officials/volunteers about the show and the desire for it to continue.
7. Encourage your friends to tune in to the show.
8. Post your support for the show on your club’s fan forum and build some real grass root supporter momentum for the clubs to take notice of.

I have no affiliation with the show personally other than being a 'fan' but I know Chris Kendall would really appreciate any and all support, including any emails to mailto:totalsanfl31@hotmail.com .

Total SANFL – a great show that should be given every chance to continue in 2007 in my humble opinion.

Maybe as a group we could all put in calls to KG and Cornsey about keeping this show on air?

Naturally they need cash to run the show, maybe 5AA might be able to help advertise the need for a sponsor?

In the meantime lets all cut and paste the above and post it to our own clubs message boards. 8)

Edited to add, if you are struggling to get Channel 31 on your tv, here are a few tips!

I think all of us at SAFooty will agree to continue to support Chris and C31 as much as we can to continue his great work in 2007.

Well I didnt seem to do all that well on 5AA this evening on the subject, Graham seemed to take the line that the coverage is not wide enough and that not enough people watch the show. Yet OzTam figures show that more people in South Australia watch C31 than Foxtel?

I would ask anyone that is passionate about this to get on the phone to 5AA talkback - 8223 0000 and have a go at getting your point across so that the SANFL might take some notice of the thoughts of the public. Give it enough publicity and I think we are in with a good chance of the show being put to air again with SANFL funds.

I also today telephoned Channel 31 to speak with them about keeping on the show, they told me that in order to do so they are facing a bill of $1000 to $1200 an episode to put the show to air which is just getting out of their reach of their resources.

The SAAFL show will be going ahead agin this year though, and C31 are meeting with them this week to finalise it.

I am really concerned about where the SANFL is going with promoting SANFL footy with this. It doesnt seem a large amount of money to me for promotion and I think that the quality of the show is really good and a credit to those who put it on. If the SANFL did get behind it, they could promote the show through the footy budget and then people might get to hear about it and watch it which would be a definate win win situation for both Channel 31 and the SANFL.

I am going to phone my local member of State Parliment tommorow to see if there is anything that can be done about getting the government to boost the signal of Channel 31 and promote community television. Yet I would encourage everyone in here to take the advice of the opening post and write to the SANFL, get publicity on 5AA and do whatever it takes to keep the show on air.

Totally and completely agree. The SANFL and the clubs need this show. Losing it would only compound the loss of mini-league and a number of other traditions. Let's all get right behind this one and make it clear to our clubs and the league how much we want this show on air!!!!!!!

I admire your enthusiasm however wouldnt the energies be better spent asking the private sector to sponsor the show? Dare say you will get further with this angle

I'm sure Chris Kendall would be more than happy to accept financial support from wherever it may be available.

I really liked the add with Rowe and the Weed for grassroots footy round (or whatever it was) last year. However, the cost of the ad would probably be in excess of the level of finance required for the show to run for a whole season. Based on sojourner's figures (even at the top end of $1200), a season of Total SANFL (say 30 episodes including finals plus the odd special interview) would cost about $36,000.

The Advertiser does well to keep a SANFL theme in footy season as much as it battles against the AFL coverage for space. The ABC is great with its coverage of one game a week despite its battles against the Sydney programmers. Radio 5RPH doing 50+ Games a year? SENSATIONAL. ABC Radio (finals), Life FM (weekly) and 5AA (finals and a few games that dont clash with the Cows and the Pahhrr) help out the cause also. But a weekly one hour TELEVISION show is something we need to continue to promote the grassroots footy league especially now (as mentioned above) mini-league has fallen over.

SANFL, clubs, private sponsors or philanthropists - the source is not important especially if a combination of the above all chipped in a little bit each at the very least.

I phoned the Advertiser today hoping to speak to Doug Robertson who I regard as one of the best SANFL writers, unfortunatley he is on holiday and will not be back until February. However I was able to speak with the sports editor who I was able to discuss the above issue with at length. He asked me several questions and I did my best to give him as much information as I could. He said that they would allocate the job to Zac Milbank to look into it, so hopefully with some luck we may be able to get it mentioned in the Advertiser which could help more people to know of the problem and to get on board to help save the show.

I have also phoned Frances Bedford who is my State MP to discuss the possibility of the Government looking into the idea of boosting the signal of Channel 31 so that more people can get it. I left a message and they are going to try and get back to me this afternoon. I did also mention to the staff member there who was quite interested to hear that the union has a show on Channel 31 to discuss issues relevant to trade unions, being a Labor mp and being that we have a Labor state government I am hoping that their interest in this show might be another help towards getting some support for the boosting of the signal to the same level that is offered in Sydney were it is the same strength as SBS.

Good luck with Zac Milbank  He couldn't even research the Cupido clearance saga properly and wrote the recent 'Tiser article! On this morning's 5RPH Sports Show he had no clue that the SANFL has a points system for clearances that sets the maximum and minimum transfer fee's when 2 clubs cannot agree which is the case with South and West. Very poor form from someone who does regular SANFL stories.

My suggestion would be a formal approach in writing from Chris and the C31 Footy Team to someone like Robert Gerard and his companies, SA Brewing via the West End Brand and the SANFL itself although I understand they gave the show no formal support last year.

Oh Frig, here comes another threat of lawsuit.
Zac, get your boss to ring me and I'll tell him BPBRBs name and address so he needn't threaten me this time!

Yep - I have to join in the "Leave Zac alone" chorus. Have worked with Zac in both radio and tv and have known him as a friend for many years now - one of the most enthuisiastic and hardest working members of the local sports media and he brings a lot of SANFL knowledge and passion to every media appearance he does. He is a big supporter of the C31 Total Sanfl show.

I'm not doubting his enthusiasm or passion just pointing out he didn't do his research into the Cupido clearance saga - a story he broke but going by what he said this morning had no clue on how the SANFL Clearances work when there is a dispute e.g. a tribunal and points system decides which determines the ultimate fee set based on lots of criteria. It has been in for a few years but maybe either of the two clubs new CEO/GM's both being recent Victorian recruits to the jobs know how the clearance system works but surely that is not the case?

So sue me for my comment and observation and I will tender his radio conversation this morning as evidence which will reveal his "guess" work!
