Round 5 - ANZAC Day: Central v Glenelg @ Adelaide Oval

Postby Big Phil » Mon Apr 20, 2009 4:02 pm

So after a strong 3 quarter performance by the Dogs against the Panthers, they now get to play the Grand Final rematch on ANZAC Day at the wonderful Adelaide Oval. WIll be interesting to see the ground with the Western Stands being dismantled, may add a different persepctive to the game as a spectacle but nevertheless, very much looking forward to the clash.

Glenelg come off a win, just getting over the line against Westies and will be keen in improve from their last performance. Centrals will probably go into this game with a fair bit of confidence and no doubt, the be will be keen to show coach Roy Laird they can put 4 consistant quarters together. I would suggest there may be a couple of changes to the Dogs side, including possibly losing Griffin to the Crows.

This being the case, Daniel Schell may come into the side after his first game for the year in the 2's last week. Also, if Brayden O'Hara (on report for tripping) gets suspended, young Ash Duncan must be a chance to his opportunity at league level after very solid efforts in the reserves. The Bays will welcolme Wayde Mills back from suspension and will be hoping Backwell and Grima are available after their shoulder injuries.

Here is my predicted line up for th Dogs:

Full Forward: Ian Callinan Daniel Havelberg Daniel Schell
Half Forward: Eddie Sansbury Matthew Westhoff Chris Gowans
Centre Line: Kyle Jenner James Gowans Lee Spurr
Half Back: Luke Barmby Justin Hardy Ryan Williams
Full Back: Heath Lawry Yves Sibenaler Brayden O'Hara* (*Ash Duncan IN if O'Hara suspended)

Ruck: Jonathon Giles Paul Thomas Matthew Slade

Interchange: Scott Dutschke, Jason Mackenzie & Chad O'Sullivan

IN: Schell
OUT: Griffin (Crows)

I think there will be an exhibition game on before the league game on Saturday involving the Police v Firefighters (or something similar) so I'm not sure where the reserves will be played and on what day. I think there should be a good crowd at the Adelaide Oval on the day as well, it is always very moving to be involved in ANZAC Day game with paying respect to the Diggers, let's hope we can get 8,000+ to the game.

The reserves are playing at Elizabeth Friday night, whilst the U18's are playing the curtain raiser.

And as for the game, Central too strong at this stage and unless the Bays have an absolute miracle day, the Dogs will salute by 30 - 40 points....

Why do the SANFL keep persisting with these non-reserves curtain raisers? All it does is encourage a late arrival at the game and does nothing to build any atmosphere pre-game.

Also, Centrals league side will be wearing their 50 year anniversary strip for Saturday's game.

As for the result, at this stage I'm saying Centrals by 35 points.

The cynic in me says it's part of the dumbing down of the reserves competition, just like the U18's concept.

I'd say ring the SANFL or Centrals office and they will be able to confirm...

I'll see what I can find out in the mean time and post something if I do...

You heard correctly. There is nowhere else now, unless they set up a temp area for them - I doubt they would do that for a SANFL match.

I'm gathering this will be the broadcast game on ABCTV? Does anyone still do the media updates for upcoming rounds, I think they were in monthly blocks?

I was referring to curtain raisers in general, not specifically anzac games. A couple of games had u/18 curtain raisers in round 1, which was a spectacular failure, with several more planned throughout the year. Reserves as a curtain raiser has been the best way to start the day for years now there's no reason why it should be changed.

I'll still be trying to get there early. With a reduced capacity, and with Ticketek having struggled with big Adelaide Oval crowds since they took over from Venue*Tix (QF/EF last year and the Redbacks v Blues Twenty20 spring to mind), I want a quick entry and a good seat (well, as good as you can get with the best seats becoming a construction site).
