North "recover" a genuine ruck chance!

Postby drebin » Thu Jun 05, 2008 9:08 pm

From the NAFC website:

Former Adelaide 36ers Jordan Dodman has decided to resume his football back with the Roosters. Jordan last played for NAFC in 2005 in a Under 17's final, he also came through our Under 13, 14, and 15's programs, before focusing solely on Basketball. Jordan has represented Australia at junior level and has been a part of the Adelaide 36ers program for the last four seasons. At the grand old age of 20, Jordan has once again returned to football and is looking forward to becoming a valuable part of the Senior Squad. Jordan is 207cm and we will look to develop him into a Ruckman. Please get behind him when you see him running around in the Red and White, it might take him a little while to adjust, but Andrew and the Coaching Staff are confident he has the wares to develop into a very good Ruckman!

This bloke could give us a hell of a boost once he gets a few ressies games under his belt. His sheer size will be an issue for most of his opponents.

At a guess, I'd say Richard Lounder. Or Romano Negri. Perhaps Dean Farnham. I hope that answers the question for anyone in advance.

The way the NBL is heading, basketballers should be looking at footy and clubs should be targeting basketballers.

With Daniel Wakelin coming out of retirement to play on again, will Jordan take Wake's spot if he can perform in a few ressies games ???

In saying that, how long since he has played competitive footy, 3 years or so ??? Will he step straight into the reserves side and take the position of a good club man like Matty Down or will jars send him to Gaza or Greenacres to play a few B grade and A grade games before forcing his way into the North reserves side and who knows from there ???

Another Dean Brogan, Matt Illman in the wings ??? If he can do as well as Brogs that will be pretty good, Matty Illman played a few years with West Adelaide but is now a consistant performer with Goody Saints in SAAFL Div 1 I think ???

He is in the ressies Monday and with no disrespect to Wakelin but bringing him back has not added to our rucks in reality. I have said all year that we should have blooded one of the younger ruckman instead of first getting Burford back and now Wakelin.

Once Dodman gets match fit and adjusted to Football again (eg the physical contact) he should be a very good player. A few of us have seen him play U17's and he was dominate back then although he didn't have the fitness level due to not training and living in the country.

At 207 cm and around 105 kgs he is a big bloke and they don't grow on trees so I am very pleased to see North get a bloke who could go very well but as with many unknowns only time will tell.

Big Phil, with respect, if Humphrey B. Bear performed in the Ressies he would take Wakelin's spot. The kid has only got to find some touch and fitness and he'll be in.

Fairy Nuff :D

But how would Humphrey be able to play footy when he's a mute :-#

He wouldn't be able to call for the ball or talk to his team mates on the ground...

Okay, I guess I'll be the one to bring up the obvious.
Wasn't there a guy that came from the 36's way back in about '84 and played with North for a very long time. Was it Parsons?
Whatever, it was pretty big news at the time, and there was a lot of talk about it in the media about how the guy would adjust. He did pretty well straight away I think.
I reckon this guy should do pretty well, given that he's huge, has a background in footy and has been playing sport all this time, it shouldn't take him too long to get back in to it. Probably would have been still developing even if he'd never taken a break in any case. The bigger they are, the longer they take so I have heard.

Parsons (I think) came from a basketball background, I think he even came from the 36's and was a very good ruckman for North.

Yes Parsons came from Basketball and was either in the Australian squad or at least in the training camps.
Won the Jack Oatey medal in 87 and then had a few seasons with the Sydney Swans before coming back to continue at North and like Dodman he apparenyly had a footy upbringing as a teenager.
Considering Wakelins stats for the 07 year were something like 25 kicks, 12 marks and 30 handballs from his 20 odd games, Dodman could be a breath of fresh air.

Yes it was Parsons, and he had also played plenty of footy before basketball.

AFL clubs make the mistake of picking up blokes purely based on their size, and worry about developing their skills later. I don't know a lot about this bloke's football ability, but I'd be more concerned had he never played footy before making the switch from basketball to footy. At least with his junior footy, he must've been a half-decent prospect to be playing junior footy at a SANFL club.

Athletically, basketballers make good ruckmen, but these days the ruckmen needs to get a bit of footy around the ground too, so if the skills are shite, then you wouldn't touch him with a barge pole.

Perhaps we need to begin a new thread elsewhere on the site titled "Is the sport of Basketball imploding?"

His football skills are pretty good from memory, I saw him play junior footy in the country and saw him in an under 14's GF put a goal through from about 45m out, I reckon he'll be on the radar of AFL clubs now.

He would have been on the AFL radar when he played State U18s 3 years back in the U18 champs, as 2nd to Luke McEntee.
