NO SMOKING SIGNS

Postby Tiger Couple » Wed May 07, 2008 4:06 am

I was at the Glenelg v Centrals game at the Bay Sunday and was sitting in the Family Area as this is the position I have always sat at.

Next to me there was an incident which had the potential to get ugly but could have been easily avoided if the NO SMOKING SIGNS were bigger and stood out.

An older Gentleman with his wife was next to myself and my wife ands there was a couple of opposition supporters next to them who decided to smoke. He asked them nicely to stop and told them they were in a NO smoking area. Then later on they decided to light up again. The gentleman next to me became quite abusive towards the people smoking, I could not see a sign saying no smoking till my wife pointed it out and the people standing in front of it moved. I pointed the sign out to try and calm the situation but once again people moved infront of it before the people could see.

Then the gentleman next too men slapped the smoke out of the person hand which was uncalled for as it could have got real nasty. He then began to abuse the person who was going to light up again and was swearing at him and then finally a security person from right up the back was showen what was going on came down to sort things out.

I know AAMI Stadium is Smoke Free maybe the SANFL need to look at this to prevent these issues or put Bigger NO SMOKING signs up in and around the Family Friendly areas.

At every game I have encountered someone smoking near us which has been fine at away game but game at Glenelg has meant people have been smoking in the Family Area. They need security to police this a lot harder so that these incidents don't get out of hand.

The Centrals supporters smoking were not really in the wrong as I had never noticed the signs and the Glenelg supporter had ever reason to aske them to stop but he stepped the line when he physically touch the Centrals supporter. I commend that person who got slapped for not going on with it because it could have been ugly if he had of returned fire.

Smoking is one of the most disgusting things that innocent non-smokers have to endure. Asking someone more than once not to light up would have me going down the path of doing more than just knocking the ciggy out of the pr1cks hand.

I enjoy standing up on the hill at Adelaide Oval and Glenelg Oval, and in packs with the rest of the Bays supporters at away games, and unfortunately, there are always times when my fellow man are smoking away. Out of respect to them, I allow them to smoke, but I do my utmost to stand somewhere where I am not forced to be affected by it.

Having said that, I don't think it is fair in open air such as SANFL footy grounds, to make all smokers go right out of the stadium to smoke. Footy Park is a different story because if they smoke around the bars, the air is trapped in and kids/non-smokers are forced to walk through that to go to the toilet/tuck-shop. I also don't think it is practical to have a smokers area in a nominated section around the ground, because smokers like to watch the footy with their mates, who may be non-smokers.

If a sign is up suggesting that people not smoke, and someone needs to be asked more than once to stop smoking, I think it is free-for-all with the reaction. Kudos to the Bays fan for not ignoring the ignorance of an idiot.

Well done to the dogs fan for showing some restraint and not belting them in retaliation. I think it's great when we can all find positives like this TB!

Yeah you are right - I didn't see any.

While we are asking questions of each other, any coincidence you are back here when the bays hit their straps?

Good post TB, I don't smoke but I think wowsers in our society see smokers as an easy target for holier than thou self-rightgeousness, I think outside on the hill at the footy, the smoke is pretty diluted so I don't have a problem with it. Most of the smokers I know are pretty considerate and obey the signs and regulations. I reckon the guy who got annoyed was an ex-smoker, they are generally the most evangelically anti smoking people I know.

Had a Doggies person  light up next to me during the second quarter, but as he was a half decent bloke it didn't really bother me

I don't mind it, as a reformed smoker, but the kids area should be better signposted and should be smokefree...easy enough to jump over the little flag barrier...

Boo to the Glenelg person for showing a bit of a violent streak...that shouldn't be tolerated in the kids area either...nor any area actually !
The joy of being on the hill drinking beer cannot be understated

Well Drebin, for one I would tell the person that I know John Fidge. If that doesn't do it, I would tell them that if they don't put the ciggy out, I'll either:

-Cry
-Threaten to knock them out
-Spray the fire extinguisher all over them
-Remind them about THAT game in 1975 (if it was a Dogs supporter)
-Get security to sort them out

Of course bear in mind I'm talking about idiots that blatantly know the non-smoking rules and light up anyway, in signposted non-smoking areas. Anyone that does that deserves whatever comes to them.

Don't worry old son...I know you are/were a smoker, but I have said I don't mind smoking in the outer at the footy...I have an option to move away if I don't like it.

That would require one of the useless so-and-sos to unfold his arms and move towards the vicinity of the incident. You could try dropping a trail of pies from the nearest security person (i.e. 100 metres away) to the smoker. Good Luck.

I just don't get how smokers still think they have the right to inflict their filthy and unhealthy habit on the rest of us. Regardless of if it is outdoors...

And some of them get so freekin precious about it.

Then when they get cancer or emphysema (sp?) we are expected to subsidise their health care...

Kudos to those who move well away when they "need" to lighht up - but they are the minority.

Good work by the old bloke for smacking the fag* out of the blokes hand...
