Territory side chase stars
Article from: The Daily Telegraph

January 03, 2008 12:00am

AFL stars Peter and Shaun Burgoyne, Andrew McLeod and Daniel Motlop could be playing for the Northern Territory by 2009.

Adelaide champion McLeod and the Port Adelaide trio head a long list of potential recruits for the new SANFL side.

Power draftee Marlon Motlop, utility Tom Logan and Crows forward Trent Hentschel are also on the shopping list.

AFLNT chief executive Tony Frawley said his league wanted the new Territory side to be the "home" SANFL club for the seven AFL players.

"We want the NT players to be available for the Territory if they don't play with their AFL club," Frawley told the Northern Territory News.

"That's seven ex-NTFL players based in Adelaide and we're saying to the league (SANFL) that we want them to play for us."

Players returning from injury or dropped for lack of form would return to the Territory side in the same manner they would play for home clubs Port Adelaide Magpies, Eagles or Norwood.

Corey AhChee (Port Adelaide Magpies) and Charlie Sharples (Sturt) will also be targeted.

The Territory side's administration base will be at TIO Stadium in Darwin where office space will be dedicated to full and part-time staff.

Training bases will be split between TIO Stadium and Traeger Park in Alice Springs.

AFLNT officials are pushing for 12 home games if the Territory is included in the 2009 SANFL draw, including six matches in Darwin and another six in Alice Springs.

Frawley said representative players involved with NTFL clubs would join the October to March Darwin competition after January 1.

I don't know, it sounds fair enough to me. I doubt that many they mentioned will get a run with the NT apart from M Motlop or Logan but it does wake you up to the contribution of the Territory to the SANFL. If this is going to happen I wonder just what sort of concessions the NT get, if any, when/if they enter the SANFL. Do they get first pick of any NT players in the comp, do they get to pick in the mini draft, what does the 2 AFL teams think about any of their players playing for a NT team? It does sound like a done deal. Ditto on Sharples though, looking forward to watching him improve this year.

Believe it when I see it. Was told by John Halbert that it's dead in the water but that was 3 years ago.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Must admit it was only 12 months ago I was told Tasmania was a sure thing and we all know how that went, agree that I'll believe it when it happens.

Locky if half of your core group of supporters went up there, how many you reckon would return??
Death by beer!!!
Seriously I thought most people on this forum would be against the idea, or indifferent of a NT team in the comp. It's good to see that some are for it. I think it'd be a great boost.

We went up only a couple of years ago and had one of the best weekends of our life.
Yes, a hell of a lot of beer was drunk but we had a ball and can't wait to do it again.
There was probably a good 20 from rocketrooster.com that went along with about 80 other North supporters and that was just for a trial game!
Can't wait to get back there.

I'd be for it if there were 22 rounds, not 18. Particularly as they want 12 matches as home matches.

A mate of mine and fellow Blues supporter, lived in Fanny Bay for a few years, he returned to SA about a year ago citing that if he'd stayed up there he'd soon suffer death by alcohol. He's a big bloke and BIG drinker.
It's good to hear that you had a good crowd go up for that trial game Wedgie. With all of this extra team in the SANFL I always thought Tas was a better idea, but if I have to travel to either Tas or Darwin in the middle of footy season I know which I'd prefer to go to. Tasmania in the middle of winter???

There is one good reason to not allow a NT team in our Comp.
Bayman has not missed a Glenelg game since 1972
Thats about 800+ games in succession
If Glenelg play up in Darwin who is gunna lend him the money to get there ?
