Round 3 Under 18 results

Norwood came from 32 points down at half time to defeat South Adelaide by eight points at Coopers Stadium Thursday night in an extremely entertaining, highly skilled contest.

In front of a good crowd for Easter Thursday, South opened strongly, with a seven goal second term opening the gap from the barest margin held by Norwood at 1/4 time. Keegan Brooksby provided a strong marking focal point, en route to a match high tally of six goals, while Tyson Davis-Neale and skipper Sean Beath were winning plenty of clearances at the stoppages. Chris Bradwell defied his size (170cm, 59kg) to take on the bigger bodies in winning contested football, while Jack Guy had an intriguing battle in ruck opposed to promising Norwood big man Daniel Gorringe.

The long break seemed to spark the Redlegs into action, with Joel Aish and Jay Shaw crumbing well in the 50 metre arc off any spilled marks by Matthew Panos and Cameron Shenton, both of whom led hard and moved strongly to present. Mark Evans' grunt in centre resulted in the centre breaks swinging Norwood's way, while Stewart Fincher had a fantastic battle with Panther Eli Horrocks throughout, both players sharing honours. South's run seemed to have slowed somewhat, despite the best efforts of Michael Mazey and Justin Bollenhagen, who were both willing to break the lines and carry the ball to send them into attack. An injury to Aish in the third term, with what appeared to be a knee, halted play for some time and allowed Norwood to regroup and steady under a short Panther surge. Luke Bowd and Simon Pistelli tried their best to lift South with creative midfield movement, but Norwood held a three point lead at 3/4 time.

While South were snaring goals through smaller men, they needed more forward support for Brooksby, while Norwood's Tom Langford was dangerous throughout in pushing up to CHF in notching three majors. Some controversy as there was confusion between the umpires as to whether a scrambled soccer from Brooksby had been touched on the goal line resulted in a major, but Norwood, through the cool heads of Gavin Roberts on a wing, Mitchell Grigg in midfield in the last half and Tim Jenkin, steadied to post a memorable win.

NWD 3-1 5-2 13-9 17-13 (115)
SA 3-0 10-4 13-6 16-11 (107)

Goals: Nwd - Aish, Panos, Langford 3, Shaw, Evans 2, Gorringe, Jenkin, Hofmeyer, Roberts
SA - Brooksby 6, Mazey 3, Bradwell, McKay 2, Davis-Neale, Beath, Richman

Interesting match review particularly this line .... "through the cool heads of Gavin Roberts on a wing, Mitchell Grigg in midfield in the last half and Tim Jenkin, steadied to post a memorable win". Mitchell Grigg was injured before half time and spent the rest of the game on the bench, while Roberts was injured early in the final quarter and did likewise so not sure how they could have steadied the team.

West Adelaide remained unbeaten after a last minute goal gave them a 3 point win against Sturt at Blackwood last night.

Well done westies on having their 16 and 18's games at blackwood on thursday. Pretty scrappy affair in both games. Am here on hols at the moment from the west and standard not quite that of our 18's comp all be it ours has been going longer than yours. Quite impressed with a couple of young lads that kicked a few goals in the 16's game. Hard to teach kids to crumb a ball front and square. Will watch for them in the future. The 18's group westies had a couple of good kids. sturt were disappointing for all the fanfare. People in the know tell me they have blundered by not picking elite squads. Is this so ?

Good to see Norths policy over the past 3 years of giving the golden pass to former & junior coaches family & friends paying big divvys.

Presumably Brooksby is a son of one of the 2 former South Adelaide defenders? Possible father/son selection for the Crows presumably.

He is Phil's son. One of South's allowable overage players on the night.

Not sure what is wrong with Sturt u18s, would have thought that they would be on top of the ladder undefeated as most of the team would be from last years u17 premier side. Not sure about them not picking elite squads.
