i've noticed a poll on the harness site about racing on good friday night & atm it stands 56% for & 44% against racing, now the arguement of religon shouldn't enter because movie theatres & the like are open & if it were religous then these places would be shut as well, i think that friday night racing, football etc should allowed to be conducted without criticism & i believe they have been playing rugby league on good friday night for a fair while now in nsw...for the record i am a religous man

The irony is in Italy which one could say is the base for the Catholic faith, the play all of the Serie B on the Good Friday and the Serie A on the Saturday, and have the Sunday as the day of rest.

Most major Soccer leagues in Europe never play on Fridays anyhow. The only time they may do so, is if Friday falls on a Boxing day, and then they have a super "Boxing Day".

Do you know if the rugby is allowed to sell alcohol when they play good friday? I think that is basically the only reason there is no footy. They can't get a licence for alcohol on that night.

i don't know voice but if the majority wanted football on good friday night but it was an 'alcohol free night' surely most people would forgo a drink at one game of the year, having said that then why are nightclubs allowed to open on good friday night ?

I would definately go and watch on Good Friday even if it was alcohol free. I think the league is thinking about the revenue they would lose though.

if a pub can open and sell beer then surely a sporting venue would be able to as well

I'm not a religious man, but I used to be. Now more Buddhist, so bring on the Good Friday Footy!

I remember the old Lennies Days, when they got around Licensing Laws by serving slop (Goulash?) on a plate as you walked in the door to start drinking. Ahh..... Good Times!

I remember being in England on Good Friday in 1992. I was staying in Stevenage and there were three games in the country on the Good Friday, one of them being up the road - a 2nd Division clash Cambridge v Portsmouth (who were about to play in the semi finals of the FA Cup). Admittedly a small ground, but the Cambridge end was a lockout and I had to go in the away crowd and got first hand experience of the Pompey Chimes. It was a fantastic day.

Nothing to do with the rights or wrongs of playing on Good Friday (I am all for), but a cherished memory.

The reason that there is no Footy on Good Friday is the cost of hosting the event. It is a government law, not a religious law that Alcohol on its own cant be served on Good Friday and that law exists so that people in the industry get to have the day off work as well as everyone else.

The SANFL, the harness racing industry etc etc are required by law to pay Triple Time for workers on Good Friday. Along with the less revenue from bar sales, that is the reason why they dont host the games $$$.

Not to mention that on Good Friday the services from Trans Adelaide are cut to significantly less than an ordinary public holiday, so there may be a single carriage train once every two hours if you are lucky.

People are quick to sledge Churches for being the reason why there is no sports on Good Friday, yet its an arguement that doesnt hold a great deal of water. The only way that it will happen is if people lose their triple time payment for working the Good Friday, and who really wants to campaign for workers to earn less money???

Every Friday is good, the governement just chose that one at random for a holiday and its all their fault!
Damn governments!
No footy for me, it would disrupt the BBQs I have on that day.
On a similar subject, anyone got a big freezer I can lend that can hold 8 months worth of Hot Cross Buns?
