Qualification rules

AFL players always have and always will have a huge influence over the result of the finals. It is understandable that the AFL clubs don't release some players due to injury because they are the 1s paying the big dollars. On the other side of the coin it is a huge advantage for the sanfl clubs that have a player released and are able to use him.

The difference this can make is enourmous. Take a Central V North match where Symes can play for the Dogs and Motlop can't play for North.

I think the fairest solution is to increase the qualification mark significantly. Realistically Motlop and Symes are not a true or regular part of their SANFL side.

The counter argument to this is what happens if one or both AFL clubs play finals and they need somewhere to put their players who wern't selected and they havn't qualified.

ps. what happens in this situation as it stands?

I think a very simple rule would be you have to play more SANFL games than AFL games to qualify for finals.Makes sure the player is indeed a SANFL based player and not some who end's up being dropped or returning from injury through the SANFL,playing 4-5 games.

Agree with most of what's been said.
I think more SANFL than AFL (to have respect for majority of local footy), with a minimum of 11 played (6-5 the best case scenario).

leave it at 3 thats what its been since day one so whether its right or not it doesn't matter as it evens out over a period of time, another anomoly is if the criterior was lengthened to say half the games what happens when the afl sides are in finals & they have players needing to play in our finals they get a game & have played 1 or 2 games they get to play also what about brett ebert he played a 2's final a couple of years back as port were in the finals yes there are anomolies but it evens out in the long run, mind you with these anomolies it SHOULD WORK BOTH WAYS for instance if players have qualified (whatever the criterior) for sanfl finals they should be allowed to play without the pressure from afl clubs not to or PRETEND THEY'RE INJURED yes folks it should work both ways

I don't know if it has changed for the lower gradesbut the old SANFL rules used to be that if a player had played 14 games in the higher grade he couldn't go back down for finals unless the higher grade was in the finals too.

In 1992 Craig McRae played about 4 games in the 19s (I think he got 10 McCallum medal votes in those games) and went up to the 2's and wasn't seen again. However I recall in rd 20 we were discussing what were going to do with him as Rd 20 represented his 14th game for the 2's and he wouldn't be able to go back down again (finals permitting)

The 14 games in a higher grade rule is so If a player is injured for part of the year he doesn't have to worry about player X amount of games in the lower grade to qualify. So that is a possible option the number of games played in the higher game.
