"the trophy, which recognises excellence across all grades of football"

What a totally ridiculous statement. I know it's a hobby horse of mine, but unless you finish in the top 2 or 3 at League level, you haven't got a hope of winning the trophy and wins at junior level are almost irrelevant.

The points system is ludicrous and doesn't live up to what the trophy aims to reward.

How should they award the trophy then? what poiny system would you like to see?

Just a points system that doesn't make the junior grades irrelevant. Under this system, 1 league win is the same as 5 Under 17 wins. Just bring then points system closer, so that the differences between the grades is less.

(Or perhaps call it the 1980TM Medal which you win for being the League Premiers.)

Seriously though, Tassie Blues, I congratulate Sturt for this year, a worthy winner of the award under any points system.

Well its interresting that the team with the most wins this year across all four grades is the team that has won the trophy - not the minor premier.

I wonder how many times in the history of the SHL trophy has the team without the most most wins in all the four grades hasn't won it? Spelly?
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

My memory may not be totally accurate but I believe the points used to be 10, 5, 3 and 2 and was then changed to the current 100, 50, 30, 20 a few seasons ago. Ratios the same but numbers bigger!

No, only ever had the first stanza of 'The Tyger' in the siggy over on SL.org, where it remains.

I think Jones & Palin are more appropriate for this board than Blake 8)

I think you mean "the club with the most wins across all grades did not win it in that year?"

With that in mind:
Norwood in 1963 had the most wins across the grades - 52, but Port won it with 46 wins. Both clubs actually finished on 248 points; I assume the League points had Port win on countback. North had also more wins than Norwood (48.5).
The winner in 1967 - North - had 53 wins, but less than Glenelg (60.5) and South (56.5).
Not only did the League points help out Sturt in 1968, but Reserves played a part, too. This was the SHL points tally for the top 6 with the wins in brackets:
Sturt: 278 (42)
Port: 277 (53)
North: 271 (59)
Glenelg: 234 (47)
Torrens: 218 (42.5)
South: 209 (44.5)
18 League and 16 Reserves wins Sturt had in that season.
North (52.5) and Torrens (50.5) had more wins than the winner in 1969 - Glenelg, with 48.5.
Port shaded the winner, North in 1971, by 58 wins to 57.5.
21 wins in the minor round in 1978 for Sturt did it - they only had 46 wins, to Norwood 56.5 and Port 52.
Port had 58.5 wins in 1981, but Glenelg won the trophy with 57.
Sturt in 1983 had less wins than Norwood and Port - 52, 56 and 56.5 in that order.
Norwood had 52 wins in 1996; Port had 56.
Again in 1998, Norwood had less wins, 58 to Port 59.
The following year, Port won with 50.5 wins, but were behind both the Eagles 54.5 and Central 52.
Eagles had half a win less than Port in 2000 - 54.5 to 55.
Central were 8 wins behind Eagles in 2001 - 53 to 61.
West had the most wins in 2003 - 53.5; Central won with 53.
North in 2006 had 47 wins; Eagles and Port had 50.5 and 51.5.

My best guess is that they did not like decmial numbers for draws in the Reserves and 19s, so they changed it for the 1996 season.

PhilH wrote:Sturt a worthy winner however the points calculated

Across 4 grades

Sturt - 15 + 18 + 14 + 19 = 66 wins out of 80 grades

Glenelg - 16 + 15.5 + 14 + 11.5 = 57 wins

Port - 10 + 8.5 + 13 + 15 = 46.5 wins

Eagles - 9 + 10 + 15 +8 = 42 wins

North - 9 + 14 + 6 + 11 = 40 wins

Norwood - 9.5 + 8 + 11 + 5 = 33.5 wins

Central - 14 +10 + 5 + 3 = 32 wins

West - 2 + 5 + 9 + 8 = 24 wins

South - 5.5 + 1 + 3 + 11 = 20 wins

82.50% of wins across all grades is the 3rd highest % since 1962 - Norwood in 1984 had 69 out of 82 (or 84.15%) and Port in 1962 - 62.5 out of 75 - (or 83.33%).
