Mark Williams

Postby joelie » Thu Aug 07, 2008 12:13 am

Had a bit of a chuckle when I heard Mark Williams (on channel 7's AFL Sunday morning show) respond to the question "Wasn't Nick Salter only playing reserves for his SANFL side last week".??

Marks response "we have absolutely no say over where a SANFL player plays their footy. Their club controls that".

Found this quite a strange statement. Surjan, Harwood, Willets ("get him up forward...") ????

I always thought the AFL cubs instructed the SANFL as how to best use an AFL player. I recall Neil Craig upsetting Graham Cornes in the early 1990s by not using Crows players in the Norwood team the way Cornes wanted him to.

And there was a player who was taken from one club and put into another because the coach didn't use him properly, can't remember the circumstances. So I think that statement from Williams is incorrect.

I think the crows have been very good in allowing players to earn their stripes in the SANFL. Sure, they should offer their thoughts on a player's abilities and where he might be best played not to mention their health if necessary, but in the end that should be merely a resource of knowledge for an SANFL club to make the best decision on where to play a player. But if a player is going to be a regular AFL player, then they're not going to get there without being able to become a regular SANFL league player. The crows could have moved Griffin to another club like the Power did with Surjan and Willits but which of the 3 looks the most likely to become a long term AFL player? I think merely earning an SANFL league spot should be something that comes hard and is deserved. The player then also learns an important lesson about working and being patient, and not being told that selection is something they deserve from the outset.

I'm fairly sure it was a discipline matter that saw him dropped to the Reserves, not form. Its not like he could have insisted that WWT's play them in the League side.

Just for clarification

Nick when in the ressies was a rookie and was his only game in the twos this year.
Was dropped due to balance and form within our forward lines from the game at Prospect the week before.

Certainly NOT a discipline reason

Tough gig coaching SANFL sides in this day and age...
Is 2009 the year of the Tiger?

GWW - if you meant discipline as in team game plan perhaps form issue could be viewed in that light but not as in discipline for 'wrong-doing'

Yeah no worries. I read on Big Footy it was a discipline matter, but accept that particular forum isn't always that reliable.

Id say Surjan. Easily.

To me I think Mark meant more about if the SANFL club wants to drop a player to the reserves then they cant stop them from doing that.

I would never say 100% reliable on this site, but I'll say this site is 100% more reliable than BigFooty.

Getting off track a bit ....

Interesting to hear comments by Andy Collins on 5AA the other week that the level of involvement/interference/instruction (whatever you want to call it) by the Crows & Power is much less than what happens in the VFL. From what he described happens in the VFL it sounded like the SANFL clubs get it fairly easy in comparison.

He said in some cases its nothing more than one phone call per week telling the SANFL club if player X is available or not.

I appreciate there are differences in the set-up over there, but it wasn't quite the picture I thought based on complaints that crop up from time to time. Less so, this season.

That's true Hondo - however, you need to remember that the VFL clubs (with 2 exceptions) are run basically as AFL Reserves sides. Collins went to Coburg (Richmond) from Box Hill (Hawthorn) as the Tigers were happy for him to coach Coburg on a P/T basis (he was also working with the Cricket BOard @ the time)
