QAFL vs WAFL

Postby brent » Sat Jun 07, 2008 11:46 am

Its not SANFL, but i am still very excited, as today I will go to my first real game of footy in over 3 years... the QAFL take on the WAFL this afternoon at the brand new Tony Ireland Stadium in Townsville.

Now, I should add that I would list Townsville as being one of the least interested towns in Australia for Aussie Rules, but there are more ex-Victorians here than cane toads so there should be plenty of support. Apparently Qld knocked off Tasmania last year which is a real breakthrough, but on paper WA should smash them so long as they can adjust to the 27 degree temperatures. Hopefully some Daryl White magic for the Maroons.

The WAFL got creamed by the VFL last year so a good measuring stick for the QAFL. Townsville provides an evil home ground advantage though so really the locals shouldn't get smashed, but yeah - it's hard to see them getting up against the West.

a couple of names there for QLD, I assume that is Aaron Shattock, the ex Lion and Tom Tarrant who played for South Adelaide for a year or 2

I would love to be up there for it, I used to live in Townsville and I loved the place, apparently the new ground that has been redeveloped from the old West Townsville Bulldogs ground looks good, what are your thoughts on the new stadium Brent?

the WAFL should keep the tradition of flogging QLD by 20+ goals

WAFL won by about 10 goals

WA were a class above Queensland although they still looked ordinary and would have been flogged by SANFL or VFL today.

Local security guards were telling off a bunch of sandgropers for making too much noise and banging on the fence. Everyone there was telling the security guard that its "the done thing" at the footy and to f**k off. Classic...

Crowd was a disappointing 1000 or so by my estimation (not too bad in the context)

Also D Wise... ??

Is that Daniel Wise who played for for both Woodville West Torrens and North Adelaide ???

I know David Lillico for Queensland played a couple of years out at Centrals, back in late 90's, early 2000's I think...

Still would like to see Subiaco play Westies or South at Subiaco in a match to see who really would win it!

A fair home ground advantage there. Subiaco might even be able to beat Centrals at Subi.

Ben McEntee injured?

I thought the QAFL teams were mainly in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast? If so, why was it played in Townsville? 1000 was a pretty good crowd if thats the case.

Yes the QAFL is mainly based in Brisbane and th Gold Coast however they are trying to promote Aussie Rules (and the new stadium) up in Townsville and to see whether it worth staging an AFL pre season game up there. For the record crowd attendance was closer to 2000 (about 1800) says so on bigfooty.com
