Double Headers?

Postby Sojourner » Wed May 07, 2008 2:09 pm

I cant remember the last time that the SANFL programmed a double header, the last one that I went to was at Football Park and I think it was South v Glenelg then Port v Norwood, as I recall there were quite a number of people there though.

Which begs the question of why we dont do the double headers any more in the SANFL?

Thebarton Oval would be an ideal location for something a bit different like that on a neutral ground!

Pretty sure they had one two years ago (Central v Bays, Eagles v Norwood at Adelaide Oval).

Can't recall if there have been others since.

They have the first two weeks of finals as double headers. I think that's enough...

I don't really like the concept of double headers, however I would like to see an experiment where one entire round is played at the same venue on the same day (ie. four games back to back). Start the first one at 11.00am and all over by 11.00pm.

Would be interesting to see what the crowd figures were at various times in the day...

The final round that year was to have been a double header: the prelimination final South v Glenelg, plus Port v someone. However the @r$eholes at the inferior Victorian league decided to schedule a Crows final match up against it, and the SANFL backed down like the pussies they are and rescheduled the Port match

I don't mind the full day of 4 matches idea Fatal...I'd imagine some sides might whinge about having to play at 11am and would feel hard done by in that they have to undergo a completely different pre-game preparation routine.

I actually think the SANFL should trial some days where they have 17s, 19s, Reserves and League all on the same day at the same venue. Many of us don't see our 17s and 19s as we're at the ground where the Reserves and League side are playing. It could be that the 17s play at 9am, Reserves at 11.45am, League at 3pm and 19s at 6pm-ish. I'd certainly stick around for the full day to see that. Just think how much money clubs would make on catering, etc.

If they did this once or twice a year, supporters could have a look at the young talent coming through the lower grades.

@ Woodville on Saturday from 9am
Under 17
Reserves
Under 19

Back to back to back, with the glaring anomaly being no league game meaning there goes 99.5% of the crowd.

It would be absolutely possible to have four games (not necessarily underage) in one day at, say, Norwood and Elizabeth.

Under 17 10:00am
Under 19 1:00pm
Reserves 4:00pm
League 7:00pm

In fact should Glenelg have suitable lighting soon (hopefully), having that kind of set-up as the build up to the first night league game there would be absolutely incredible.

To be honest, I can't see why the four games in the one day set up hasn't been done before. It's a great idea. It would boost the crowd numbers up a bit too.

if the mums & dads, sisters & brothers & girlfriends etc go to support the u/17's & u/19's & all of a sudden a league game is on as well would they have to pay or not ? if yes then some of the youngsters supporters might decide to stay home rather than fork out to watch a loved one play at underage level

ps, i'm all for double headers (especially on hanson road)   but seriously i think there should be more of them, subject to clubs not missing out on income
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

You could get around that by only charging at the commencement (or thereabouts) of the magoo's, not too different to what they do anyway ... If it get's regular league supporting bums on seats earlier trying to avoid an entry fee, Im sure that money would be re-couped (or close enough) in additional food, drink, merchandise sales, and would be a fantastic experience for the kids in junior grades.

for double headers would you prefer a game at 11:30 followed by one at 2:30. or alternatively start one at say 2:00 and start the other one at 5:00. I mean Adelaide Oval has lights.

This will happen once the 19/17s are changed to 1 U18 comp TB. Means all support staff can be in one place which will make EVERYTHING more viable.
