Be happy there's a concept we're competitive at as we wouldn't get close in any sort of Origin concept.
Don't forget names such as Ian Callinan Chris and James Gowans, Luke Cowan, Chad O'Sullivan and Heath Lawry
I was only thiking about something along those lines the other day...
I know i miss worded the State game calling it "State of Origin", it is only a State League Representative match. But it does bring up a very interesting point. It is known as
State of ORIGIN because they players wearing the representative jumper are from that state
ORIGINALLYI have always thought it's a bit strange having blokes that come from interstate playing no more than 1 season in their chosen League and then become eligable to wear a State gurnsey, a great great honour no doubt, when they don't actually have ANY origin in that state at all ???
A classic expample of this was a couple of years ago, Adrian Wilson (son of Centrals icon, Wilbur) was recruited to Essendon as a rookie and had a really great year in the VFL for the Bendigo Bombors, Essendon's affiliate side. Because of some great form, young Adrian found himself with a Big V jumper being selected to play for Victoria ? I have always been of the opinion that you should reward the local players who have been born and bred in their particular state. How many good players have been denied the fantastic opportunity to wear a State jumper because a better interstae recruit has come into the league and set the comp a light in his first 12 months, meeting the qualification requirements ?
I'm not really complaining too much because as a Centrals supporter, we have proudly had a few "adopted" interstaters go on to represent ou club in a red yellow and blue jumper. Obviously, in recent times we've had guys like the Gowans twins, Chris & James, Simon Arnott, Luke Cowan, Heath Hopwood and Robert Schaeffer just to name a few. Then there is the reversal scenario as mentioned above with Adrian Wilson. Also, there are no doubt many examples of players in the same situation from ALL other SANFL clubs. I just reckon the local guys should be the ones rewarded with a State jumper and it got me thinking what 2 teams would look like, matched up againsts each other, with players that have come from interstate and been quality performers in our league and then the locally born & bred guys that deserve their chance ? I'll have a shot at it below but once again, like the other team I tried to pre select, it will no doubt be a little bit Centrals biast !! ? See what you think
I will pick teams based on this years players in the SANFL, disregarding any qualification requirements and making it simple format of :
South Australia vs The Allies. No doubt, there are plenty of other options I could have gone with but this is the final draft, I think?? !! :
SOUTH AUSTRALIA : Coach: Roy Laird (Centrals) FF: Chris Ladhams (North) Ben Warren (South) Jamie Vlatko (Norwood)
HF: Scott Borlace (Norwood) Daniel Havelberg (Centrals) Mathew Bode (Glenelg)
C: Elijah Ware (Centrals) James Gallagher (Norwood) Adam Switala (Centrals)
HB: Andrew Whiteman (Sturt) Daniel Schell (Centrals) Jason Torney (South)
FB: Paul Thomas
(c) (Centrals) Yves Sibenaler (Centrals) Ben Nelson
(vc) (Sturt)
RK: Brad Dabrowski (Eagles) Mathew Slade (Centrals) Justin Cicolella (Eagles)
INT: Jason Mackenzie (Centrals) Sam Fairclough (Eagles) Luke Ivens (North)
I must admit, I did find it a bit harder to pick the “born & bred” South Aussie team than I did with the extremely talent laden “Allies”. I guess this is proof as to why the SANFL comp is so strong. Also I'm happy to be corrected otherwise but I think I got players origins correct on both sides ?
THE ALLIES : Coach: Andrew Collins FF: Ian Callinan (TAS) Brant Chambers (VIC) Ben Schwarze (VIC)
HF: James Gowans (VIC) Clinton Alleway (VIC) Heath Younie (vc) (WA)
C: Jade Sheedy (NSW) James Allen (VIC) Brett Backwell (VIC)
HB: Ben Hollands (NSW) Mark Mckenzie (VIC) Scott McGlone (NSW)
FB: Brett Zorzi (VIC) Corey Ahchee (NT) Andrew Hayes (NSW)
RK: James Mieklejohn (NSW) Jeremy Clayton (c) (VIC) Chris Gowans (VIC)
INT: Daniel Batson (VIC) Leigh Treeby (VIC) Luke Crane (QLD)
There were definitely some tough decisions to make with selection for both teams. On paper, they are both fairly reasonably matched up but I reckon “The Allies” have just got a tiny bit more class all over the ground as well as a bit more potency in attack. Andy Collins is the coach as he is the only current league coach not from SA, I think. Last years Premiership coach, Lairdy, gets the gig for the Croweaters.
Will be interesting to see what people think of the selected teams and feel free to offer opinions where different players would be better off selected than my choices. It was harder than I first though, but feel free to have your own go. Happy analysing fellas… !!
