The Best SANFL Club of AFL Era

Postby eaglehaslanded » Sat Mar 22, 2008 8:27 pm

I was just looking through some old records and thought it would be good to look at the success each club has had in what I call the AFL Era (1991-2007). I gave each club an allocation of points based on their premiership standings at end of each year.

Premiers=50pts, Runner Up=40pts, 3rd=30pts, 4th=20pts, 5th=10pts, 6th=4pts, 7th=3pts, 8th=2pts, 9th=1pt.

No surprises but Central is the winner.

Here are the official standings to end of 2007.

CLUB TTL
CD 547
PA 492
EAG 489
NWD 311
NA 242

ST 222
WA 182

What would be the results from 1997 to 2007 since Port Power got in the AFL because i would think most of Port Magpie points would be pre 1997!

Too arbitrary.

Why not simply compute the mean ladder position over this period?

I'm stunned my Redlegs are that high
Roger Woodcock -- 602 goals from a forward flank makes you a legend.

Most of the 90's were no where near as bad as the first part of this decade JTC.

In that time North and Sturt have won 1 flag each, North have been wooden spooners twice, Sturt have "won" the spoon 6 times.

Port's results in the 90s will always distort things because the club was on the verge of entering the AFL they were able to attract quality recruits & sponsors. They also were able to retain key players in their SANFL squad because of promises of getting on the 1st Power list.

Premiers in 1990, 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996 .... then Power into AFL .... premiers 1998, 1999 .... then along came a new SANFL power!

Should this be in the history forum BTW?
