Seasons are changing with the hot weather now creeping into March which hasn't happened in the past.

Despite this, sporting seasons are sticking with their existing schedules and mind-sets. This may be causing some of these issues. So the programming of the games along the lines of Wedgie's comments becomes more important for the Administrators. ie, later starts to make use of daylight saving, etc.

Blindly programming 2pm start times in Feb & Mar is now outdated and TBH potentially plain stupid IMO - some more lateral thinking is required. What's wrong with week-day evening trials starting 7pm for example? They are only trials why do we need to flog the players in the hottest part of the day when the match basically is meaningless result wise?

Rubbish- I remember hot days in March back in the 80's.
We had a heatwave in late December this year, I recall a heatwave back in Dec '93, & Feb (can't recall year)
Yes Seasons have variations to them- they are not planned.

For real climate change read Immanuel Velikowsky's descriptions of events in circa 1500 BC in Ages in Chaos and Worlds in Collision. I would need to research his sources to make up my mind how much of his theory to believe.

I was surprised that the Centrals v Sturt game wasn't moved to a night game given they were playing at a ground with lights.

Given the rareity that games are played in this heat (it wasn't this hot during the trials last year), the current rules are bot adequate and well-thought IMO.

Round 1 1986 was played in 36 degree heat, March of 1989 was similar to this weather as well. The 1961 Grand Final was played in 35*C, 1973 GF was in 31*C.

Yep research on heat and exercise has been going on since the turn of the last century....

Remember the Swiss women's Marathoner at LA in '84?

Pretty sure Jaquesy (Glenelg), Pitre Bourdon (Nth Adel), the blokes I know who were working with SANFL clubs back then knew the effects of heat on exercise .
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Not really, different strategies have been trialled e.g. pre-cooling and ice vests but for intermittant team sport exercise the basic remain the same.

Plenty of fluid pre game, frequent drinks breaks and re-hydrate.

Throw in Dean Jones in the tied test match in India in the mid-80's (lost 7kg in one day and spent the night on a drip after scoring 200).

Example of what I was saying about March 1989:

Date Min Max
Feb 27: 18.9 37.3
Feb 28: 25.8 39.2
Mar 1: 26.5 39.4
Mar 2: 24.0 38.0
Mar 3: 29.6 38.7
Mar 4: 25.9 34.3
Mar 5: 22.1 37.8
Mar 6: 24.0 39.0
Mar 7: 26.5 40.3
Mar 8: 23.8 39.0
Mar 9: 21.9 34.2
Mar 10: 22.1 26.8

Very worthwhile discussion to be had. My problem however, and I know this is the SANFL thread, but what happens when a bloke in the country rocks up to play a trial game after a few ales the night before and without the sofisticated knowledge of hydration etc. that people know about at AFL or SANFL level and gets into trouble physically?
Who is going to answer the questions then. This is where the SANFl should be stepping in. Particularly considering say the loxton cup this coming weekend wher temps will reach around 40 consistently.
