SANFL CLUBS NEED SALARY-CAP BOOST

with the advent of a national competition, sanfl clubs have long enjoyed enough financial muscle to ensure they can outbid VFL and WAFL teams and attract the vast majority of quality recruits outside of the AFL.

the sanfl's salary cap is far in excess of those of the VFL and the WAFL -a centrepiece in the sanfl's desire to be regarded as the best state-league competition in the country and much to the frustration of both the wafl and vfl.

quickly the landscape is changing. while the salary cap in sa remains virtually double that of state leagues in vic & wa, the mining-based economic boom in wa has made the 9 wafl clubs able to package very lucrative work offers to complement an inferior football contract.

several quality midfielders & ruckmen have found their way into the wafl in 2008 after local clubs believed they had offered them very attractive contracts to play in the sanfl.

the economic boom in wa is certain to see sanfl clubs beating down the door at west lakes demanding a further lift in our salary cap. such a move would be vigorously opposed by the vfl, which is the big loser in the recruiting race, and quite likely the afl, which has always cast a suspicious eye on the size of the sanfl salary cap.
