Radio coverage for 2006

All discussions to do with the SANFL

Postby spiderk » Thu Feb 02, 2006 8:18 am

Being fortunate enough to hold a minor role in the RPH coverage, I really hope that all the current guys - Phil, Darryl, DB, Paul and John - continue to work together, as the team is a solid one that is very professional (certainly make my job easier there!). Commentary would be hard at the best of times, particularly trying to keep up with everything happening off the ball (where some of the best action is!!) as well as on.

Hopefully ca is also able to continue his work there this season.

I know SANFL radio coverage is important, but based on my dealings with Coast FM, the SANFL would be better off with no coverage than coverage by this incompetently run (and that's putting it nicely) radio station.

Hopefully Life FM continue to kick on calling games in 2006. 5RPH and Life FM do a great job currently, but ideally it'll be great if another radio station would call some games too.

Maybe it's just me but I feel ca and nai have been harshly treated by RPH.

Just because Darren and Craig will be in the UK this year why has the station suddenly decided to change the format which has worked successfully over the past few seasons???

I am referring to Thursday nights mainly.

Young fresh voices add a greater dimension to Thursday nights SANFL coverage. Am I wrong or right?

Must admit I got bored of the Thursday night show and tuned out quite a while ago, if they're revamping it I might have a listen again.

2006 SANFL Radio Coverage

Postby sturtpeter » Fri Feb 03, 2006 11:36 am

Yes they are revamping it.

With guys who were guests on the show and are great commentators but not in touch with the issues which made listening to Chris, Craig, Darren and Andrew interesting.

Some of Paul's jokes lately are close to the edge

ds, can you explain why ca and nai are not involved in the revamped Thursday night show?

I found listening to the four guys who started footysa.com interesting and some of the questions asked to guests were excellent including Darren alluding to old Jack about travelling down the Expressway to Noarlunga :)

We all know Darren and Craig will be in the UK but that still leaves Chris and Andrew here.

Did I miss something? I don't think the ABC has been mentioned, does that mean NO radio action from them???

Sturtpeter, I don't know of anyone who has said that nai or ca won't be involved. I can say that we do know that there was a lot of negative comments about the show last year. So all we wan't to do is refurbish the show and bring it back to a being a great show. One thing I do know is that you can't have 4 people in the studio all trying to ask questions, the best way it works is by having 2, this way each can bounce off each other or even take opposite sides. When you have 4 the guest dose'nt know who is asking the question and then you start to talk over each other which sounds dreadful. All we wan't to do is give a better coverage than we did last year, and lets remember we couldn't have done to much wrong by winning the Best Coverage to Sport Award a National Award no other South Aust. radio station has ever won.

Knowing some of the footysa.com guys I have been a regular listener on Thursday Night for a few years now and thought the biggest issue last year was the domination by one panelist over the top of everyone else. That and the insistance on playing music for minutes on end during breaks was annoying. I tune in to hear about footy not music.
My understanding from the source is that it is ca & nai's wish not to continue with the show this year. Whether that is because of their enjoyment level with the program dropped dramatically last year or because they just have other priorities you would have to ask them direct. However I believe no one from 5RPH has gone out of their way to contact them either to discuss a role. ds - feel free to correct if wrong.
ds appreciate the huge job you & the team do giving us the SANFL. It was just nice to have that fans input from guys like Chris & Andrew on the show & I for one will be sad to see it gone.

Arthur I will try to answer your points.Domination of one panelist, someone does need to be the host, is that a reflect on him being dominate or the footysa guys still learning the trade. The music issue can be rectafied but one thing you sould take in is that the first thing they teach you in radio is that if you play a song let it play out because someone will be listening to that song. If it is ca or nai's wish not to continue with the show this year that is their choice please remember it is the first week of february and we are still working on what is right or wrong. You also mention the fans input we are all fans of the sanfl or we wouldn't be doing it and we always are asking for calls on our sanfl shows so please feel free to call and give us your input, I know these guys as well and would love to give them all a chance but you do need to have consistancy and believe me if they keep doing the great work they are doing their chance will come.

Listening to the Summer Show last night the host must have announced at least four or five times the new lineup for the SANFL Thursday show when the season starts. No mention of Chris or Andrew. If its being promoted on air then surely the decision has already been made ?

ds - that leaves me with a question - were ca or nai involved in any discussion on this decision or was it made by others without their chance for input ?

IF they were dropped without notice or a chance for input then that is a shame & I can only hope the station does not treat the remainder of its volunteers in the same way.

I think they have given great service to the station especially Chris with his special comments often at late notice. I know that most on this site would love to see them still involved with some way and we encourage 5RPH to reconsider.

believe me if they keep doing the great work they are doing their chance will come.
ds - that leaves me with one final question --- how can they keep doing this great work if they have been taken off of the show ?

Sorry if I'm sounding a bit ansty by this, just backing up my mates. Still love the coverage

Can anyone shed any light on whether there will be any SANFL radio coverage available this year over the Internet? It's such an important service for those of us who are living overseas.

ds, I made several comments about the Footy Show last season as a regular listener, so I hope I can be constructive. Firstly, the music. I agree 100% with arthur about this. The people who listen to the show would be generally dedicated SANFL fans who tune in to listen to footy. To have 7 or 8 minutes or more of music out of a 60 minute show is not only an inefficient use of the time available, but also annoying in the extreme, especially when the same music can be heard on several stations at any time. I know you have to break the show up a bit, but for goodness sake, get rid of the long music breaks.

100% of your audience want to listen to football, most of them want to hear about their own team, so they want a fair slice of the listening time. They would start with goodwill towards the presenters, but this fades if they think their team isn't getting a fair go.

Keep the show focused on footy. Keep it focused on the teams and the players. Know the subject, so there is credibility in what is broadcast. Everyone struggles to pick winners, so look a bit beyond the obvious when discussing games. Read the teams out fully and correctly, that is the main reason most people are listening.

Personally, I thought having Doug Robertson & Co. on last year worked well. The other interviews were generally good and most listeners would have given the presenters big marks for their enthusiasm and work.

I do think you're right about having too many presenters, so I look forward to a "tighter" show.

If it's too difficult because of time pressures to get enough info about clubs and players, I'm sure there are enough people on here who would help with questions about their club if they were asked.

Despite the few annoyances, I listened regularly and was grateful to the people involved for what they do for us. All the best for this season.

Thanks ds.

I think ca and nai should state whether they resigned from 5RPH or in fact haven't been contacted over the Summer.

I know last season's Summer Show with many of the footysa guys involved was ten times more informative than the current format.

Ben Hook is excellent and a welcome addition too.
