SANFL LAUNCHES 2007
“LEAGUE FOOTY†SEASON
The South Australian National Football League today launched the 2007 season at the
Adelaide University Main Oval.
Guests arrived at the location to the scene of 300 local school kids decked out in SANFL Club attire,
participating in footy clinics around the ground. Club mascots added to the atmosphere as they
attempted to partake in the clinics with the kids.
Executive Commissioner, Leigh Whicker, welcomed guests to the SANFL 2007 season. Mr Whicker said
“This is the 130 th season for the SANFL, the oldest league in the nation. But being 130 doesn’t mean
league football is looking for a rocking chair, a hot water bottle or a knee rug…not by any stretch of the
imagination. 2007 is set to be another great year for what is the premier State league in the nationâ€.
In launching the 2007 media campaign, Mr Whicker revealed the background behind the decision to
rebrand the SANFL as “League Footyâ€. “We believed the term “local footy†best illustrated the easier
access to rounds, the greater accessibility to players and coaches and the chance for fans to get closer
to their heroes than they are able to do at AFL games. But now it’s time to change direction once more,
to better reflect the history and status of the SANFL competition. That’s why we’re re-branding football
in this State as “SANFL League Footyâ€.
Mr Whicker officially launched the SANFL’s new TV commercial, featuring SANFL icon and football
legend, Neil Kerley.
Following the formalities, the SANFL League Club coaches took on members of the local media in a 9-a-side
football match on the historic and scenic Adelaide University Oval. The SANFL Club captains took a
backseat in this year’s launch by running the drinks to their skilled but tiring Club coaches and media
representatives. Plenty of talent was on show with the likes of former Glenelg champion Graham Cornes
and Advertiser sports writers Doug Robertson and Zac Milbank playing for “Team Mediaâ€. “Team SANFLâ€
certainly didn’t run short of talent. The great Andrew “Jars†Jarman, former Magpies champion Tim
Ginever and new recruit to the coaching ranks, Sturt’s Rick Macgowan, all represented “Team SANFLâ€.
The SANFL season kicks of this Thursday night when Norwood battles the Magpies at Coopers Stadium.
Easter Saturday sees the South Adelaide take on reigning Premiers, the Eagles at Encounter Bay. West
Adelaide will challenge Sturt at Broadspectrum Oval on Saturday afternoon whilst Central District go
head to head with North Adelaide under lights at Hamra Homes Oval.
