Re: AFL Womens League

Well, it's certainly true of the Crows administrators, given their lack of regard or respect for the SANFL by roughly and desperately inserting their reserves team in it post haste.

As for their supporters, I can't say whether they are 'real' or not because there's more to it than simply knowing a bit of footy background. It's a pretty subjective label. I've seen plenty on both sides of the fence.

Some Crow fans only 'know' of the Crows and SA football post 1991 because of their age, and that's fair enough (mind you, there are plenty who are old enough and lived through the 70s and 80s but didn't get into footy until the Crows came on board). At any rate that doesn't preclude anyone from developing and appreciating an understanding the circumstances of how and why your club came into existence, its record and its achievements. To me, a true fan digs deeper to understand the club's fabric, its roots, and what's come before.

I think that for the majority of followers the Crows history starts in an Atco hut at West Lakes in October 1990 with Graham Cornes, Bill Sanders and Kerls, as if the stork simply dropped them off into the SA football community.

It would've been easier if the WAFL didn't post a press release at all on the basis that they genuinely don't give a tinker's cuss about the integrity of the comp, because that's what it says once you peel back the thin and desperate tissue of management spin and bullshit that wraps up the truth.

Raise the bat Magellan, you made the double century.
It really is an honour. To quote Kym Hodgeman, I'd like to thank my parents...especially my mum and dad.

But I can't take all the credit. So many people behind the scenes worked tirelessly and relentlessly to make this happen, like Rob Chapman and the 6 league directors.

Re: Crows 2015

Your "fans" or at least a good percentage of them is a large factor. For me it's the slogans - the team for all south Australians, and the team song - the pride of south Australia..... and worst of all.... admiration of the nation. Nothing like a bit of self proclamation!

Can you imagine any of the Melbourne clubs using "the team for all victorians" as their positioning statement?? Not likely!

Good points - Have often wondered how the Victorian or Western Australians in the group would feel about claiming to be the pride of a different state. The club feels plastic and purely corporaqte most of the time, although I will say they earnt a bit of respect for the way they rallied throughout the adversity they faced this year.
Spot on. IMHO the 'team for all South Australians' bit is a piece of clever marketing designed to attract fans who don't have or understand what it means to have a genuine or traditional footy allegiance (and by that, I mean those who never grew up pre-1991 following a 'local' SANFL team or are too young to know any better).

What it's saying is if you want to barrack for this club, all you have to do is live in SA (with over a million other people) and then you can identify as part of the club. It 's a very low bar that doesn't ask much of its new fans to get on board. The subtext is if you're a South Australian but don't support the Crows then there's something wrong. On the other hand, I think the suburban Vic clubs, and Port and Freo, who each represent a particular piece of turf and have a separate footy history, ask its fans to identify with that suburban area and its unique social fabric and identity. It's pretty easy to identify simply with an entire state.

This means that the Crows position themselves as an SA state side in a club-based comp. Most of their fans are too patriotic to the SA 'cause', the echoes of 'Kick-a Vic' from the 80s that you still see peddled in West End Draught adverts, and the club's appetite for slick marketing bullshit to realise there's a difference, particularly when for example on the weekend Hawthorn had more Victorians playing than the Crows.

In the end, their marketing approach has worked, so good on them for that, but it means that most of their fans are absolute pains in the arse.

Re: Crows 2015

All jokes aside

Is there some kind of underlying culture problem within the Crows.

You have the history of Tippettgate and Steven Trigg

The state Guernsey saga

You've got Dangerfield leaving to go home despite the risk he may not end up at his desired destination, this is despite the fact the Crows would appear on field to be in a better position than any of his suitors.

Bernie Vince leaves in surprising circumstances and becomes an all australian two years later

Player/Club Being investigated by integrity unit

Jaench and his indiscretion

Camporeale despite getting good results does not want to be their head coach

Worsfold look set to move to another state (non home state as well) to take up a role with a club who seem in a far worse situation than the Crows)

CEO now under investigation for prior indiscretion, admittedly nothing to do with Adelaide but he does now represent them.

This has all happened within 3 years and in the case of Camporeale, Worsfold, Dangerfield even more surprising in the wake of the Phil Walsh tragedy, in which footy clubs are generally associated with a 'we'll stick together and create something special' attitude rather than people moving in their own direction

Obviously I am very anti crows but does this make any sense or are they a victim of circumstances.
It's odd that two coaches who can do the top job don't want it. I can understand Dangerfield wanting to head home.

From my perspective, the whole club has a culture issue because it's identity is shaped by marketing campaigns and catchy slogans, as opposed to having a defined 'turf' and celebrating it's history and achievements, and most who support and manage the club don't see a problem with that. Whether there's a player culture problem, only the players can answer that.

Mind you, with Mark 'The Godfather' Riccuito now unofficially running the club with an iron fist, and other intellectual luminaries like Nigel Smart floating around West Lakes I'm not sure I can blame Campo and Woosha.

Frank Zappa's "You Are What You Is".

Not bad. Like most of his rock work it's a bit inaccessible if you're not a Zappa fan, but there's some great musicianship (Steve Vai on guitar) with some trademark witty social commentary that deserves a listen.

Also, interesting to read some of the previous discussion about Primus. Their irreverence and boundary-pushing musicianship IMHO borrows a lot from Frank Zappa.

Deadly Hero: The High Society Murder that Created Hysteria in the Heartland by Jason Lucky Morrow

Historical murder case from the 1930's. The murder itself sparked fear in Tulsa, Oklahoma, but the details of the case led to mass hysteria about teenagers killing people for fun on mass.

Very interesting how police work was done with very basic resources. Even though its a true story, it seems like fiction because of the foreignness of the time period to me.

I read the sample from the Kindle store last night, and made the purchase today for $4.09. Amazon is saving me a lot of money and bookshelf space.

If you're into the true crime genre then John Safran's "Murder in Mississippi" is worth a read. Just finished it on an overseas trip.

He investigates the violent murder of a noted white supremacist by a local black lad who is currently serving time through a number of interviews and some documentary research. The deeper he digs, the more questions and secrets he uncovers about the victim, the killer, and how 'justice' is dished up in the south. Safran's conversational writing style also helps the story come to life.

North Adelaide of 86 beat Melbourne here and Collingwood at Waverley. The Bays didn't do much though. Wow! And I'm sure those Vic clubs would've thrown absolutely everything at North in those vital clashes
Collingwood might not have thrown the kitchen sink at it, but they wouldn't have wanted to lose to some South Australian club no-one in Melbourne gave a stuff about on home soil. I can't remember who went into these games favorites, but I'd doubt North were objectively favoured to win. Don't forget the Victorian arrogance and disrespect that was dished out towards anything outside of Melbourne at the time.

So, on that note, North Adelaide's 1986 side is the frontrunner for Mr July/August. ;) Certainly not Mr September (or Mr October) that year.

=)) and they were desperate to win as well! Yeah, right..
Surely you're not saying that Greg Phillips, Bruce Abernethy, and Mark Williams, three born-and-bred Port Adelaide 'never say die' champions who played for Collingwood that night, merely went through the motions? Very un-Port Adelaide. I can almost hear The Creed peeling off the walls of the Alberton Oval changerooms. ;)

Seriously though, if Collingwood didn't give a stuff then why did they lose by only 8 points, and at the death? You must concede that if they were not 'desperate to win' then they wouldn't have (a) bothered to field a full squad and (b) compete right to the end.

Anyhow, have a look and judge for yourself:

Re: Old Adelaide nightclubs

Got kicked out of the Austral once (late 80s?) coz the bouncer said I looked like I was about to spew. Well and good, but:
- I already had spewed in the dining bar, and promptly relocated to the beer garden.
- I spewed again after being escorted from the premises.
- I simply waltzed back in through the door unchallenged after the second spew and remained therein for the rest of the evening.

Can't say I miss those days...
Got kicked out of the Exeter in 1996 with two other uni mates on the basis that one of them was eating a yiros in the front bar (and we were a bit pissed). We respectfully disagreed with the bouncer's decision, and before you could say "any excuse to fight someone" we were very forcefully removed from the premises. I remember being pinned to the footpath out the front with my arm held behind my back, and another was pinned up against the tobacconist's window next door. We must've posed a real and present threat to the drunk patrons in the pub, three dribbling uni students four sheets to the wind.

In the midst of drunken anger myself and the non yiros-eating friends (who we lost along the way) went to Hindley Street police station to complain about such unnecessary roughness and seek justice. They couldn't do anything, but funnily enough another dude rocked in with blood all around his mouth, and who claimed this was also the work of the same bouncer.

Nevertheless, I managed to forgive the Exeter pretty quickly. I know it's not a 'nightclub' but it's been a favorite haunt over the years.

Re: Things I learn from press releases

This isn't a press release per se, but this thread's probably the most appropriate.

The Victorian Taxi Association launched a social media campaign this week, encouraging people to share positive stories about using cabs in an attempt to boost their profile.

Instead they've received a multitude of negative stories, and some of them are really quite concerning. Nevertheless, the fact that the cabs' association thought that this idea wouldn't be instantly hijacked by a deluge of social media truthbombs is somewhat amusing.

What did I learn?

(a) If you didn't think there was a problem in the community with the perception of cab quality before, then you'd have to concede that there is now.

(b) If this approach represents the strategic mindset of the taxi industry in the midst of the Uber wars, then it's well more rooted that I initially thought.

Read some of the stories in the article below:

Sorry if that did offend.

Tonight has been an absolute disaster unfortunately a very good friend lost their brother in the fire late yesterday so havent slept yet and have had lots of things running through my head. (especially after watching endless late night news trying to fall asleep all revolving around syria and bushfires etc etc.) I guess posting on here was one way for me to get out some of the different thoughts that's been going through the head overnight.

I suppose its more a fear of mine after seeing the girlfriend nearly lose her house last year in the sampson flat fires and now this.

It wasnt meant to offend anyone.

Re: Things that you rate!

Stephen Fry.

Saw him last night in the flesh at the Festival Theatre. He spoke honestly and passionately about the long struggle for legalising homosexuality, going back to the trials of Oscar Wilde and the effect that that had on him as a young boy (as well as Wilde's talent for writing), and the efforts of Don Dunstan to be the first state to make such a radical social change. He also spoke about his issues with bipolar disorder in a one-on-one interview with Annabel Crabb. At one point he made a joke about Victorian policemen, saying how the term 'Victorian' reminded him of 19th century England and images of policemen in tall hats and large waxed mustaches stiffly running around with truncheons. As he ran across the stage to demonstrate this, he pulled a face that looked exactly like the face he pulled when he played Lord Melchett in Blackadder. Great to see.

When I hear people like him speak on social issues, with such an enormous intellect, wonderful command of the language and persuasive, commonsense and respectful arguments, it makes me wonder whether they should be involved in politics, as a means of adding sense and intelligence to the overall public conversation - a bit like Malcolm Turnbull has in Australian domestic politics (I emphasise the 'bit'). I think the answer is 'no' - genuine 'celebrities' like Stephen Fry can do more good and influence more people and attitudes from outside of the political machine than from within.

Anyway, great to see such a giant from about 5 rows in.

Re: The best gig(s) you've seen.

Fantomas @ Adelaide Uni Bar 2000

Their first Australian tour and seeing a supergroup of the hard rock/metal world like that on the little Uni Bar stage was awesome. Dave Lombardo's drumming was earth shattering but all I can really remember was the Slayer medley they played at all their shows at that time. Mike Patton was getting Faith No More & Mr. Bungle requests all night which he refused to play.
I missed this gig, but had a mate who constantly raved about it at the time, in particular the Slayer medley (I'm told it was a medley of "Reign In Blood"). Really wished I'd seen it, if only for that medley of what I'd say is pretty close to the greatest metal album ever.

I saw them the following year at the Gov on the "Director's Cut" tour, hoping for the same Slayer medley, but sadly not. A very impressive live band, but fortunately because of my height and seemingly taler people all around me all I remember seeing is Dave Lombardo's flailing arms and at times a peek of Patton fiddling with his vocal effects unit. Patton's ability to use his voice like an instrument is second to none. Everyone went a bit crazy when they went into their version of the theme from "The Omen," complete with its Latin lyrics.

I even bought a bootleg of the show from Verandah
What a great place Vernadah Records was. There was always so much cool sh!t in there, and as a poor student back in the early-mid 1990s I would just browse and dream. George (IIRC) who ran the place always provided god service.

Reckon I saw Fear Factory do an in-store in August 1993 promoting "Soul of a New Machine", when Vernadah had recently moved out from the the arcade next to John Martins and onto a shop on the corner of Austin Street. FF played a pretty good gig at Bridgeway, and it was impressive to hear C Burton Bell interchange between the high falsetto stuff and the death-grunt vocals live.
