Re: General tv discussion thread - good, bad, axings etc etc

His direct speaking to the viewer contains some of the best stuff in the show. Stick with it fella, you won't be disappointed.
Damn straight. House of Cards is some of the best telly I've watched in a long time.

Watching Francis spin his political webs and playing people off one another is captivating, and at the same time a bit scary because you know that this is how stuff probably goes down behind the scenes in the corridors of power. He is a great character, and part of the fun is watching him develop throughout the series (and seasons). I like his southern accent and idioms when he breaks the fourth wall. It's different, but I don't think it takes away from the tension and narrative.

His wife, Claire, is just as interesting a character to watch - shades of Lady Macbeth.

For the record NG, I didn't intend to cast any aspersions regarding your opinions, beliefs, or views on this subject with that image.

Re: Things that give you the sh1ts

There's no simple answer to the drugs problem. I'm not sure there is one, short of hoping that kids abstain.

People take drugs left right and centre these days. This is particularly so in certain cultural groups, such a those frequenting dance music festivals who favour ecstasy and other mind-expanding substances, as well professional footy players and 'real' professionals on cocaine, down-and-outers on ice, and hippies who smoke weed etc.

Young adults (particularly men aged 18 to 25) are naturally risk takers, so the "don't do drugs" mantra will fall on deaf ears, as it has for a long time now. This risk taking behavior and bullet-proof attitude feeds their confidence that whatever drugs they've purchased are safe. Presumably this is because they've bought safe drugs from the same people previously, and thus have no reason to doubt their trust. If they doubt they're safe, then they'll roll the dice because there's no tomorrow when the party's happening today. But the thing is no-one can know whether the drugs are safe, since those substances are cut with all sorts of stuff and the producers don't care what happens once they're ingested. At least with alcohol you know its subject to quality controls.

I'm not convinced of drug testing stations inside venues. There's a tension between prohibiting substances on one hand and then providing personal advice on them on the other. If they're going to happen, then the prohibition should end. I'm not sure they'd be thoroughly used at any rate, since people who are confident they have safe drugs wouldn't bother wasting time getting them tested, particularly if it means they're going to kiss goodbye their investment in a high. The testing station argument also assumes people take drugs after they enter the concert; if they are illegal and are searched at the gate then they risk confiscation prior to testing. For this reason I assume that a lot of substances are ingested prior to entry.

Re: General discussion/predictions - in lead up to 2016 seas

Here’s what the Age reports as what happened:

“She told Channel 7 news on Monday night that Martin was sitting at the bar with a friend and was drunk, loud and offensive. When she asked him to calm down, he became more agitated and threatening.
"He reacted extremely angrily, very very agitated, began swearing at me, standing over me physically, it was extremely intimidating," the woman, referred to as "Tracey", said.
She said Martin "physically stood over me, held a chopstick above my head and threatened to stab me in the face with a chopstick".
She said she told Martin she intended to inform Richmond of his behaviour.
"He said, 'Are you going to dob on me?' and I said, 'Well, I will be calling the club on Monday," she said.
"To which he reacted by slamming his hand next to my head into the wall, which at that point was obviously extremely terrifying."
A Richmond spokesman said Martin's behaviour was clearly unacceptable, that he had apologised to the woman as well as to the managers and owners of the restaurant.
"He had been drinking and was clearly disruptive to other diners and a female patron," the spokesman confirmed.”

Presumably these facts are correct since Martin has issued an apology and called the lady in question to apologize in person.

There's no excuse for "threatening to stab a woman in the face with a chopstick", standing over people in a threatening manner and punching walls.

I also like how he responded by asking if she would 'dob on him'. Oh, the shame she must feel now, the trust that she's destroyed. Jeezus, go back to the schoolyard.

Irrespective of how he dealt with a complaint from another person, it's just a dumb thing to have done. It's in a 'public' place, he's a public figure (whether he likes it or not) and he has a record for poor behaviour. This reflects on the club that gives him a 'professional' job, and his own value as an athletic commodity in the footy marketplace. He's a flat-out dick for having done it, no matter which way you slice it.

I guess Dusty also hasn't picked on the recent public discussion on stamping out violence against women. Mind you, It's hard to do so when you're reading skills are confined to the comic books printed on your arms and neck.

Re: General discussion/predictions - in lead up to 2016 seas

Sure, but I'm not sure what's in dispute. The facts (drunkenness and assault) were alleged by the woman in question. Martin and the club didn't rebut them. He apologized almost immediately. If there was doubt about her story, then it follows that he wouldn't have confessed. I don't think the media's confected anything here.

I do agree the media likes to generalise and sensationalise things re: footy players. If it were anyone else, like you or me, then we wouldn't know about it. But he's a public figure (rightly or wrongly). He ought to be more circumspect.

Righto, I'm done. That's enough Dustin Martin analysis for me for this year and the next.

Re: Things that give you the sh1ts

Yep, good points. They've also written more heartfelt songs that aren't so overtly sappy (or commercial), such as "Fade to Black".

FTB is only a semi-ballad (imho, and I have zero musical knowledge/ability I'll confess off the bat) whereas with NEM they've gone the whole hog. Whether you like it or not, it's a gutsy move to try and roll with the times (as they did with the Black album) given they'd know it was going to annoy the majority of their diehards. That said, Lars is pretty $$ driven, so their advisors would have let them know where they stand I guess.

My guess would be that as pissed as diehards were they still stuck with them (although Load might have brought about a few casualties), and they also added new age supporters via the Black album.

And for the record, FTB is my favourite of theirs.
Yes, agree about Fade To Black, and for mine it isn't really a ballad in the true sense like Nothing Else Matters is. FTB follows the same formula as songs like Welcome Home (Sanitarium) and One which sound balladish at the start and then progress towards a metal ending - a bit like Stairway to Heaven does.

I also agree that they tried to move with the times and tried something different, and I definitely respect Metallica for doing that, even though I think the end product is a bit crap. At the end of the day its the band who have to enjoy what their doing, and as artists they might feel the need to change direction to avoid becoming stale. A lot of bands churn out the same stuff album after album, and it never gets any better or interesting. Take Slayer for example, they've stuck to a similar sound for many years now, and whilst the remain committed to their 'sound', IMHO they'll never ever top Reign In Blood (or Seasons In The Abyss, for that matter).

I see Metallica's shift at the time of the Black Album to mirror what U2 did with Achtung Baby. They could've kept pumping out the same sort of stuff that got them arena rock star status (The Joshua Tree and Rattle and Hum) but instead went out on a limb with Brian Eno and made an album with a completely different sound. Some people can't stand it, but I reckon it's their most interesting album, and anything that helps me forget about the lameness of Rattle and Hum's fake American pilgrim wannabe schlick, the better.

The Crew Cut by VS Sassoon.

If you've bought one of these for someone for Christmas, take it back. If you get given one for Christmas just smile politely and say thank you, before searching the house for the receipt.

It's good in theory, but as the blades are fixed to the unit and don't move, as you go over your head it cuts some as the length you set it at, and some right at the skin. I now have to go over my head with a #0 to fix up the bald patches it's left me with.

Avoid like the plague.

Re: Restaurant & Pub Reviews

Bath Hotel - Work Christmas lunch there yesterday.

Food started really well with S&P Squid with an excellent Chilli Aoili. Others ordered Arancini Balls that looked good, and Lamb Ribs that were huge for an entree.

Sadly, it went downhill from there. The Butchers Cut I had was a decent size, but just an ordinary cut of meat and only cooked medium, whereas I like it a bit bloodier than that. Others had Gnocchi (which received terrible feedback, with noone even eating half of their serve) and Fish and Chips, which was pretty basic - Again good sized portions, but most who had it didn't eat a lot.

Service was pretty slow, sometimes waiting over 20 minutes from order to get a drink.

Scenery however was outstanding - On a nice day it's worth going there for that alone.

All in all 5/10 .. Closer to a 3 without the visual delights.
I've never been a big fan of the Bath. How were the prices? My recollection is that it's not a cheap venue.

Veering slightly off topic, the pick of the Norwood pubs for mine is the Colonist, for beer, vibe, and food.

Re: Abbott/Liberal Govt Watch

THE Turnbull government is in upheaval with one minister quitting over an incident involving a female public servant in a Hong Kong bar and another standing aside during a police investigation.

Cities and Built Environment Minister Jamie Briggs announced his resignation in Adelaide over a late-night incident involving a female public servant in a Hong Kong bar during an official visit last month.

In a shock move, Mr Turnbull announced shortly afterwards that Special Minister of State and Minister for Defence Materiel and Science Mal Brough had agreed to stand down pending the completion of a police investigation.

Mr Brough has come under fire after federal police executed a search warrant at his home over the James Ashby affair.

The departure of the two MPs will trigger a Cabinet shuffle, but Mr Turnbull’s statement did not say when this would occur.

Just starting watching "The Fall" on Netflix, and hadn't really heard much about it. Almost finished season 1 (they're short, only about 5 episodes), and I reckon it's definitely worth a look.

Gillian Anderson plays an English superintendent sent to Belfast to review a police investigation and ends up investigating a serial killer who keeps knocking people off whilst they try to piece the clues together. It's an English-Irish co-production, so it has a different feel and aesthetic to a US produced TV series.

Re: Things that make you laugh

I'm of the view that there are a number of sports around the world that are perfectly entitled to call themselves 'football' - Australian Rules, soccer, both rugby codes, American football, and there may be others. Somewhere in world they all legitimately identify as a form of football game, and I don't think any code has a right above others to claim ownership of the word.

Whether your favorite code is known as 'football' is another question, is based on the roots of the code in the location and depends on where you are geographically and who you're talking to. With my Aussie Rules mates, I'll use 'football', but I'll also use it with soccer friends. I'll also use prefixes like "Australian rules" or 'round-ball' to make myself clear when it's unclear from the context.

Here in SA, Aussie Rules is known as the 'football' code. In NSW, it's rugby union or league. In Manchester, it's the round-ball game. I wouldn't go into a pub in Merseyside and proclaim that the Liverpool-Everton derby wasn't 'football' and that the real deal is a different code played in Australia.
