Massie Retires

Postby GRANTA » Tue Sep 01, 2009 11:17 am

I read in today's advertiser that Kris Massie has retired. I am very sad about this because I believe for what ever reason, we never saw the best of Kris this season. He was one of my favorite players, and to see him struggle, was one of the biggest downers for me this year :(

Very dissapointing as he is a quality player. We really need to get some midfielders now.

2009 has been a terrible season for him and the club as a whole and it would have been nice to see Kris have another season with the form we know he has.

Thanks Kris for your efforts for the NFC.

Disappointing to see Kris retire, he has been a good servant for the club even though this year has not been his best.

Reality is though, his departure will go somewhat towards helping the club get below the salary cap. It needs to get significantly below the cap if it wants to sign any new players after March 2010.

The right decision. Deserves to be remembered more for his 2005(?)-2008 with Norwood, than his 2009.

Let's hope the players dig really deep this week to send him out a winner.

sad news - he played some great, committed games for us in 2007 and for a while there it seemed when he was in our team we usually won and lost without him ... has had a forgettable 2009 ... way below his best .... good luck to him

Can't find anything on the The Tiser website for us mere mortals but the club now have an announcement up.

Kris Massie Retires
1 September 2009

Kris Massie Retires

The Norwood Football Club would like to advise that Kris Massie announced his retirement as a player at training last night.

After 131 games in the AFL with both Carlton and Adelaide, Kris continued playing at The Parade in 2009 taking his total number of games with the Redlegs to 55.

He will play his last game this Saturday at Coopers Stadium against Central Districts.

We wish Kris all the best for his future.

Good luck in whatever you do next Kris...hopefully you'll still manage to fit in a few visits to the club.

Regards

Always enjoyed watching Massie play for both the Crows and the Legs. His enthusiasm at Norwood and ability to motivated or encourage players around him was always noticable particularly when dropped from the AFL (which must have been hard). I certainly admired this trait in him, especially from a Victorian who had no real allegience the Redlegs before being picked in a mini draft.

I would really like to see the club work at keeping him in some capacity (Assistant to our new coach would be a great role).

Thanks Kris for taking the Norwood Football Club to heart.

Really enjoyed watching Kris play for Norwood and Adelaide, always saw him as one of the most honest players to take the field in any side.

Anytime he was dropped from Adelaide to play for us I always had the impression he played for our club and our jumper with as much pride as anyone.

Good luck with all your future endeavors Kris and thanks.

Agree 100% with this post. I expected big things from Massie this season, unfortunately bar a few glimpses it never eventuated.

Thanks Kris for your time with the NFC, you were a great player and a great clubman.

I know it's considered the done thing to give only glowing reviews at these times, but I've taken the rose coloured glasses off for a minute. For starters, obvious this was going to happen. He signed for only 1 year, and even if he wanted to go on, if we re-signed him after the effort he's put in this year then even our administrators would look (even more) silly. Kris made it clear to everyone last September how highly he rates the NFC. Most were in denial about this, however it was then reflected in his efforts this season. Reality is he retires with a fatter wallet courtesy of the NFC, money which would have been better spent on players committed to the cause. Yes, Kris played some great football for Norwood in previous years, whilst he was trying to get back into the Crows team. We owe him nothing for that, in fact he owes the NFC for providing him the platform for his AFL success. A real shame for all involved he did not, for whatever reason, decide to replicate that earlier endevour this season.

P.S. I can't see the point in playing Kris this week. Give his spot to a younger player with next season in mind.

Well constructed post Locky. I share the exact same view as you on this one. wasn't going to reply in this thread as I couldn't think how to word it but you've done it pretty much how I would have liked it to come across so I'll put my hand up and say didn't view Kris's contribution to Norwood as many others did. To me he was AFL listed player that got a run in the Norwood side.

I must add that once his conection with the Crows was finished I really wished him all the best as a Norwood player and wanted to see that same player that was busting his guts to get a spot back in an AFL team. I wish Kris all the best with what ever he's going on to do.

Outstanding post. Probably the most honest appraisal I have ever read on this forum with no fear or favour.

Possibly agree with most points but i believe he played with an injury most of the season and had a very limited preseason.
From all accounts a decent chap who i wish all the best for the future.
We can only hope he keeps in contact with the club and his mates and contributes in some way to Norwood's uncertain future.
