Average and median crowd figures to Round 8

Postby spell_check » Sat May 31, 2014 4:35 pm

I was interested in how much a few matches this year have skewed the average crowd figure. All other years are up to Round 10, which gives every year between 35-40 matches, with games played before AFL matches taken out, and double headers halved:

Year Average Median
1991 4866 4687
1992 4288 4086
1993 3929 3293
1994 4026 3444
1995 4570 3452
1996 3629 3244
1997 3559 2840
1998 4017 3747
1999 3370 2740
2000 3383 3016
2001 3632 2979
2002 3730 3242
2003 3267 3100
2004 3195 2918
2005 3142 2990
2006 3228 3086
2007 3092 2683
2008 3489 3048
2009 3204 3004
2010 3402 3296
2011 3442 2987
2012 3184 2601
2013 3048 2941
2014 3210 2408

Directly proportional to Glenelg's position on the ladder ...

2014 is 5 games x about 2400 = 12000 per week

Not per week, there's split rounds and byes. At the end of the season there will be exactly the same amount of games played as last year, just in a shorter period.

2 split rounds this year?

Not dissimilar to previous years and I think that makes 16 weekends of 5 games per week?

When AFL went to 9 games per week instead of 8, it also resulted in a lower average crowd figure.

Not sure we are comparing apples v apples if we don't consider the impact of an extra game MOST weeks of the season.

Realised I multiplied by the median rather than the average. Using the average the figures are:

2013: 4 x 2725 = 11,000 per week MOST WEEKS
2014: 5 x 2888 = 14, 440 per week MOST WEEKS
Weekly increase of 3440.

I find this very surprising. It is disturbingly close to the magic number bandied around earlier.........

You realise that last year there were byes, thus one (or for two weeks, three) set(s) of clubs supporters did not attend each week. Now whoever had the bye last year would be attending each week this year.

87% pf stats are made up.

Those figures include a big crowd at Clare, between Port and Crows. It also includes 10000 at the Bay for some reason.

How is it close to the figures promised ? That was per game .

I put the median in there to counter the outlying crowds, a response to I think SImonH, querying the median figures.

Here is each clubs attendance average and median for all H&A matches so far:

Team, Average, Median
Adelaide 3357 3036
Central 2124 1959
Eagles 2667 2393
Glenelg 3282 2504
North 3009 2324
Norwood 3699 3101
Port 3184 2672
South 2209 1970
Sturt 3240 3138
West 2116 1911

Yep, fair point. Bye team playing could account for 1400 (50% of an avg crowd). The case can still be made for an overall increase of about 5% in crowds, my view is that the end of season figures will be in this vicinity. There are a number of different ways of viewing the stats.

Season 2014 will have 90 minor round games, same as 2013. I believe total attendance across the season will increase by about 10 thousand or so.
With Sturt and Port in as finalists instead of West and maybe Centrals, there could also be bigger finals crowds. Especially with Adelaide Oval impact.

Appologies for wandering slightly off topic, but is there anywhere online I can find figures on SANFL attendances? Even those dating pre 1991?

Thanks for posting the stats above, they make very interesting reading!

A few points:

This year the disparity between mean and median has expanded significantly, presumably due to the large crowd for the country based Crows V Port game.

Average crowds have been consistantly falling since round 4.

Possible reasons - the novelty factor of AFL reserves is now over
- weather conditions have deteriorated.

There was a huge crowd for crows glenelg too which would have bumped up the averages

Every year I have collected crowd figures ... back to 2004, they always start strong and drop as the year progresses. This year is no different.

Comparison this year with last is tricky due to the restructure now 18 rounds v 5 games against 23 rounds v 4 or 4 games in years gone by,

But we still have 90 games in a season and each club (bar Port 9 & Crows 1) have 10 home games.

will try to post some figures later tonight but after 65 games I have SANFL as a whole up about 5-7% on last year at the same time (after 65 games).

Is it easy for you to remove the anomalous games like the first crows glenelg game? Do they matter a lot in the overall average?

Yes you can remove it, but if you are looking for a comparison don't you also have to remove the top drawing games form last year as well?

I guess you have to estimate
- how many would have turned up to an ANZAC DAY night match at the Bay against another high drawing SANFL club without Walker ... history says about 5-6K.
and
- how many would have turned up if the old system was in play and he returned via Norwood. who knows?

I estimate the Walker factor was worth about 3K to 4K to that figure. I think they would have certainly got 5K without him.

Take say 4,000 out of the 65 games and it is about 60 people per game.

Now the average after 65 games this year is 2,885 per match

After 63 games last year it was 2728 per match (up 157 per match .. 5.75%)
After 67 games last year it was 2720 per match (up 165 per match .. 6.06%)

So even if you took out the Taylor Walker factor of 4,000 or 60 per game ... Crowds are still up about 100 per game
