Adelaide Footy League Talk

Ovingham FC

Postby nuggety goodness » Mon Nov 22, 2010 3:47 pm

Well considering all the biggest, most talked about clubs have their own thread I thought it was about time we got our own too!

Firstly, we would like to congratulate and thank Darryn Butler who will take over at the helm of the Cats for 2011.

His experience and knowledge is great and the fact that he is willing to coach without payment helps us to no end. We look forward to building a sustainable club and competitve footy side for 2011 and beyond.

Firstly, we apparently owe the league another $550 or something of the likes (not sure where that's from), so we need to knock that over and submit a list of players and club infrastructure and then the league will allow us entry.

We had a good meeting with some lads from the Woodside Army Barracks on Saturday just gone and look to have at least a dozen players that will come accross plus some supporters. This as well as our current base of players should see a good base and some competition for spots hich is a much better position to be in than that of the last couple years.

We look forward to the development of our footy club and hopefully by 2012 we can step back into Div 7 with a firm foundation and a sustainable system.

Preseason starts Tuesday Jan 11, come out and join a renewed and refreshed Ovingham Cats.

Yes sir.

Know anyone who is lazy (like me) and can't be stuffed running more than 20m at a time, but can still make every contest on the ground...?

Couldn't have two midfielders who refuse to move out of the centre square ;)

in this day and age of grass roots footy,it was a privledge for me to give something back to the game that has helped me so much in life.a few people have questioned my sanity in taking on this job but to me it was an easy descion.i was going to stay out of the game for another year but after speaking to a few clubs and also looking at what is happening at local clubs in the league,i must admit i have been disgusted at the way footy clubs are run and what they are prepaired to sell for short term success.on top of that you have players who think they are worth and expect to be paid big money to play our game.for the record you guys are a joke and a disgrace to this great game.on top of that you have coaches who are called legends and great but then again when you can get a club to buy you what you want and get who you want without you really working hard at your craft, well you are the same as the people i spoke about before.ovies is a great local club, ran by passionate and loyal people who have nothing but the best intentions for their club and we will all work hard to make it work.

any players that are looking to play footy with the view that it is the game we all love and great people that we meet and want to get into an envoirnment that is going to help you also in life, and for players that are being taken for granted at their clubs come down to the cattery on churchill road come january.iu wont take you for granted a either will this great club.
a letter of warning to all in our division,we were once an easy beat, that has changed, our focus has changed and our passion is back and as they say, payback can be a bitch

playing devil's advocate here...

Realistically how long can a one team club expect to survive for? There's no real incentive to sponsor as the potential pool and associated audience is quite small.

My personal belief is that clubs should have two teams minimum and that no a grade side should be playing lower than the lowest division with two teams - be it div 7 last year or div 8 several years ago. This applies to north pines and wingfield as well.

I know its difficult for ovingham having a long history and small catchment area for players but its also faintly ridiculous for an a grade side to be playing among the c divisions.

Perhaps a focus on juniors should be employed along with any strategy to get senior teams going?

In the past we've seen ovingham a grade play as low as division 10 south (this year's c5/c6) after coming down from a two team club then yo yo between div 7 and other c division sides. It's been a ten year struggle so far.

Saying all that, good luck to people out there - hopefully in div 7 or 8 with two teams even if they struggle rather than a one side club.
always forgive your enemies...nothing annoys them so much

Why does it matter if a club is only playing its A grade in a C grade comp?
Why does it matter a club can't supply a B grade team at this time?
The important thing is that the club is playing.
As long as everything is running okay and the club's not a burden to the league, who cares?
You're my only friend, and you don't even like me.

Without trying to inflame the debate or otherwise, my old club, Milang, fields one team in Hills Football League, C-grade. The club is one of the oldest established clubs in South Australia, but does not have the resources for juniors or another senior team.

The HFL has always been very supportive of the club and has not forced the issue upon them of forming other grades, and neither have other HFL clubs forced the issue. The club has always been financial, has one of the best surfaces in the league and has not had behavioural issues or anything similar that could be detrimental to them.

Point I'm trying to make is similar to DW's - if the league is happy, the other clubs are happy, the club is financial and the players are playing good, competitive football, then what harm does it do for any club to simply field one or two sides? The main point should be about ensuring that blokes are getting a game, enjoying themselves and paying the bills.

Football needs clubs like Ovingham and Milang along the way. Not every club will be a playing and financial powerhouse, but will have an environment where players and families enjoy the place, the opposition likes visiting and a good, hard game of footy is played. Good on them.
Can you guess where I'm calling from, the Las Vegas Hilton...
