Rnd 22 Bays v WWT Preview at the Bay Sun 30/8

Postby am Bays » Mon Aug 24, 2009 10:36 pm

Crucial game for the Bays, need to keep winning against another contender in the LPRs. Important that we keep sticking to the processes laid down by Mark so we guarantee at least one week off in Septemeber. No injuries and unsure of any AFL players to return so the blokes who did the job against Sturt will hopefully do the job again.

Go you Mighty Bays
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Treeby and Powell will hopefully be back in for vital league match time before finals. Maybe Peter Fiacchi as well? From what I've seen this year, Glenelg have played with more intensity than any other team so this match will be important for some of the younger players and players on the fringe to put their hand up for finals selection against good opposition and prove that they are up to standard.

Would be nice to put a dent in Glenelg's finals plans, even if it does help out the Dogs...

the only concern i have is our form at home has been ordinary, a lot of close finishes against lesser opposition even though we are yet to lose at brighton road it is something the boys hopefully rectify sunday

The Eagles have been a bogey team of sorts for the Bays. Don't want to take this one lightly.

I think this will be a great game and depending on AFL players coming and going for both sides, at this stage, I think Glenelg by 2 goals with a couple of handy players to come back in...

Here is a little piece on Zac Hier who, if selected, will line up for his 50th game for the WWTFC.

Steve Barrett @ Messenger Community News wrote:Hier heading for a half century

WORKING HARD: Zack Hier attempts to spoil
West forward Ryan Bennett on Sunday

FOR the vast majority of his 49 League games, Eagles full-back Zack Hier has conceded a height advantage to his direct opponent.

At 187cm, Hier is relatively short for a key defender, a situation he much prefers to the alternative.

``Normally they’re a bit taller,’’ Hier said after the Eagles’ 15.17 (107) to 10.11 (71) win over West Adelaide on Sunday.

``But I prefer them (tall forwards) than the short, nippy blokes with a lot of speed.

``I prefer the body-on-body style… much rather being on the bigger guys than shorter guys.’’

Hier will make his 50th league appearance when the Eagles confront top-ranked Glenelg at the Bay this Sunday.

Standing out like a sore thumb among Hier’s half-century is game No. 6 when, as an 18-year-old rookie, he played in the Eagles’ 2006 premiership, having not long before come across from the North Eastern Football League.

``There’s nothing better than winning a grand final,’’ Hier said.

``I was stunned… after watching it (SANFL) for years growing up and then being out there one day, I didn’t know what to think.’’

After a rare finals miss last year, the Eagles are back in 2009, and so too is Hier, who has done well in the past month after spending three straight weeks across July in the Reserves.

``They asked me to go back and work on my fitness. I wasn’t quite doing enough at League level so I went back to work on my match fitness a bit.

``He (coach Ron Fuller) gave me feedback he was happy with how I went so he asked me to come back up.’’

Hier hopes to remain at the top for a while yet.

``To get to 100 games would be nice. I’m just happy to hold my spot at the moment.

``We always have good tussles against them (Glenelg), so hopefully we do alright, get our matchups right and have a good run into the finals.’’

Hate to burst your bubble but the Eagles are 3 points behind Sturt with only 1 game to play.

So unless you get 4 points for beating the Bays 3rd spot aint going to happen. ;)

This should be a good, tough match.

The Eagles will want to finish off their minor round an a solid note and the Bays will want to continue their momentum to the finals.

I'm pleased that the Bays have had to play Sturt and the Eagles before the finals ... very good preparation IMO.

That said, the Eagles will be no pushovers and expect it to be one of the hardest matches of the year.

Looking forward to it.

As an aside, will be an interesting battle in the 2's as well. The Bays need to win to have any hope of a top 3 berth, while the Eagles will want to shut the door on Sturt for top spot.

I don't believe the Eagles are good enough to beat one of the top three sides at this end of the season.
We are still building our side and we will be strengthened by the return of Powell and Treeby if they are
selected. Our recent wins against North , Norwood and West has seen us play some great footy followed by a
period where we completely fall out of the game...we wont win finals doing that and it has become a trait.
If we keep playing Kenneth up forward we need to bring in another tall in defence, maybe McEntee or Hill
will get a spot.
