SAAFL v's SANFL

Postby BUZZ » Fri Mar 21, 2008 5:38 pm

I beleive an top A1 side would be able to match it with a lower SANFL side and will certainly clean up a SANFL reserves side. A mate of mine rekons im silly and there would be a 10 goal difference with the reserves and 20+ with a league side.

That is very ambitious. Goody would not get close to West Adelaide of last year. I reckon 20 goals is being generous.
Can you bring a man to his feet when defeat is on repeat?

i was talking about this very topic about a month ago with someone because i thought the same thing.
The person i spoke to informed me of a premiership Div1 side played Norwood reserves and the Div1 side got spanked by about 15-20 goals and this happened just a couple of years ago.
He also told me of the U/19's Port Adelaide side beat a top flight Div1 side comfortably.

I played for a club in 01 who were in div 2 at the time, we played the Maggies reserves side, mixed with u19's in a trial and we won by 3 goal, that was 7 yrs ago but as the Port side was mixed with kids and fringe league players, i felt the maturity of an amature club, the physical approach and direct football of our side beat the opposition, that day.........

LK you are spot on! Goody Saints full strength against Westies 2's I'd back Goodwood by under 15.5 pts, but as for league level it would be boys against men 15-20 goals and Andy Collins pretty happy!!

I think a top 4 Div 1 side would maybe struggle against a bottom 4 league A grade side but not by the tune of 20+ goals. The div 1 side would be competitive for 3/4 of the match and fitness would tell in the last quarter. I would say the difference at the end of the match would be about 30 - 40 points.

On the other hand IMO I think a top 4 div 1 side would easily defeat the bottom 4 league reserve sides and possibly beat (it would be very close) the league reserve teams in the top 5.

After watching the West v South trial game today I might have to change my mind about the top 4 div 1 teams not being able to beat an SANFL league team. Both West and South skill levels were atrocious and I know it was only a trial but on todays effort I would expect a top 4 div 1 side would not only be able to match either West or South but maybe even beat them.

My opinion only

HAHA... Are you serious? You cant be? I spoke to Matty Illman about this months ago and he said even how bad Westies were the last few years, there was no way their premiership side would get near West. He said 15 goals minimum. Remember all these blokes were fringe players/reserves players at LEAGUE CLUBS!!! There are some players that may not be up to it at westies but you have to remember 3/4 of the side would laugh at an amatuer side. Can you imagine one of the Amatuer hacks on CUPIDO one out in the goalsquare.... ?? Lenny Clarke rucking against Illman? You need to show more respect!
Post this thread in the SANFL thread and you people who think a SAAFL side could beat an SANFL side would shot down quick smart!
You dont see too many amatuer players come out and dominate SANFL, actually you usually see them play 3-4 reserves games and go back to where they come from cause they cant get a kick in the reserves!!!!! FFS.... what a joke....

That is exactly what I would say should be the quote for the display I saw today.

Since when has Lenny Clark become a superstar - I haven't seen a double figure possesion count since his return from QLD?

Not sure Mark Demasi and Scott Webb would enjoy being referred to as former 'fringe' SANFL players, you mentioned respect R&B I didn't notice too much of it in your post...

The best A1 side would be lucky to get within 5 goals of the worst SANFL reserves side.

Fringe? no way - REGULAR reserves player

I think Scott Webb played over 100, maybe close to 150 league games?!?! Demasi, did win a reserves magary medal (whatever its called), obviously starved of opporutinies! Also Trent Mill played what around 250 league games for South. There are quite a few quality players at Goodwood who have played league or even fringe league players, but in saying that, wouldnt the majority of the league West Adelaide team be fringe if not REGULAR reserves players at other clubs?!!!! im sure if 3/4 went out to a another league club, they wouldnt be regular league players!

I think the only way to compare is the best v the best. So that means Centrals v Goodwood. Im thinking centrals by how much? Fitness is a big issue here. Previous posts have mentioned Demasi and Mills. Sure they would have footy knowledge and know where to go but is their engine the same as it was when they played league footy?

The saafl teams wouldnt get close to sanfl teams. but it would be a good contest between some reserves teams and some A1 teams. the reason for this is money!!! EG, If your 21 or 22 and trying to save money for a house or other stuff and your playing for Port 2s and you you cant get a game in the 1s and you get a phonecall from a A1 team offering you 3 or 400 dollars a game when you get 75 before tax playing reserves what are you gunna do??
