Norwood might officially have this as a recruiting area but very few people here follow the SANFL at all, and the few that do tend to be dogs fans or just have the faintest interest in the team their grandparents followed. So faint they would like to know if they won the grand final but wouldn't look it up specifically. A new team in the area would be a great boost to the SANFL's profile and would solve issues of representation and the bye of course. But the problems would be great. The capital investment and the fact that most administrators who would be willing and able are already involved in current clubs means any move would have to come at the right time. There needs to be some football figure to drive the face of the club early, council and state government dollars and even then the team might struggle for years. South's move to Noarlunga was absolutely the right one, and perhaps with more success in recent years might be making headway but still it was a bold move.

There is no doubt it would be great to have a 10th side, and the North East is the best place for it. And I think a team could be sustained here. But I also think the time isn't right. We need all 9 existing sides to be financially secure, sort out the mess that is the Power while the stadium issue needs to be played out before the SANFL can think about grand plans for expansion from within. The right time, with the right people this could work. But without one or the other it would fail, and cost a fortune.

You lost me at the beginning but the conclusion made good sense.

Just a point on SANFL following or representation ... very few people follow SANFL strongly full stop, so it's not confined to this area. Jeez, Sturt have to fight with their council just to get the privilege to play on a bastardised form of their historic oval!

I remember going to school in the '70s when 99.9% followed an SANFL club. In fact, if you found out that someone didn't follow a club you wondered what was wrong with them.

As CP has just commented on, the aspirations are now about the AFL, not SANFL for most. We survive in a niche market and do that quite well. I really can't see any completely new SANFL identity having any hope of forging a future.

Why are there so many passionate SANFL people on this forum? ... because of history and rivalry dating back over 100 years. The only reason the Eagles exist is because of the passion of those former Woodville and West Torrens supporters, many of which would still say they follow those now defunct clubs (and good on them!).

Oh, and where do I live? Well, in the North Eastern suburbs (hence the reason I asked the earlier question). I have no problem proudly supporting the Bays in an area dominated by Norwood people (including my wife). I've despised and hated them for over 35 years and will continue to do it until my last breath. The rivalry is no less fierce now to what it was when I was growing up ... except just not as many heathens about now. ;)

So nice try Mr Zappia ... come back to us once you've helped to fix hospitals and schools and other more important things for a politician to worry about.
Dunno, I’m just an idiot.

I’m only the administrator of the estate of dedja … my yes be yes, my no be no

I would have thought that a new team would be to Norwood's benefit. It would mean there would be someone they could beat!

True Norwood were very good in past centuries, But now that they're not they could then ask for another team to be added every 20 years.
