Father and son representing a club in the same season

Postby westozfalcon » Fri Jul 24, 2009 4:31 pm

Last weekend in the WAFL there was a rare occurrence in that a father and his son both played for a club on the same day, albeit in different grades.

Allistair Pickett, a 36-yeard old dual Sandover medallist played in the Subiaco league side while his 16-year old son Allisten represented Subi in the colts (under 18's). Pickett is retiring at the end of the season so it's unlikely he and Allisten will line up together in the same side. Still it's a very unusual occurence

I was wondering if a father and his son have ever played concurrently for a club in the SANFL before?

I know it is not SANFL but ex VFL players Mike and Sean Bowden played 1 or 2 games together at Rovers in Alice Springs in 1996.

Champagne Comedy from Bayman - well done.

Actually there was only a 4 year gap inbetween Father & Son representing NZ in Test cricket - Lance Cairns & Chris Cairns.

How old is Adam Cooney's first born (is it a girl or a boy?).
If it's a lad, I have a feeling that Adam started his family at a pretty young age.

i could be very wrong, but isn't their "oldest" child not his? it's hayley's (is that her name?) from a previous relationship?

apoligies if that is wrong. but if it's wrong, then yes, he did start early, as i think the kid is around the 5-7yo mark?

that could be wrong too. so maybe i shouldnt have posted anything!

That is correct. Their oldest child was from a previous relationship.

well, now that poses another question. if cooney leagally adopts the kid, can he be classed as a father son?

Not a bad question that one. I think someone on here may know the answer to that, but it's not me. :)

If the child is legally adopted, then it is a father and son situation. The child is deemed by law to belong to both parties. (having done this myself)

and also, having said that, would that mean that when my son becomes a footballing prodigy, as i fall agonisingly short (about 50 games!) of my lad becoming a F/S draft pick for collingwood, i could adopt him out to nathan buckley and then he becomes un-touchable to other clubs?

think i just got myself a fool-proof plan!

Damian Monkhorst has Woori Yallock in the grand final of the Yarra Valley League. He kicked 7 in the prelim - and his son Ben booted 3.

Tomorrow they will actually play alongside each other in the Subiaco league side as the young Allisten makes his league debut for the Lions. History in the making!

The young fella has a good sense of humour too. During an interview he was asked if he would be looking to pass the ball to his old man.
He replied "If I've got hold of it inside 50 it's going straight over his head"

Has Penola always been Glenelgs zone ?
I know that sturt recruited Michael "flash" Graham from Penola as a 15 year old.
If it was the bays zone back in 1968, I'm wondering if a fee was paid for his clearance.

This may be one for Adelaide Hawk or a fellow Nowood fan.

I remember Graham Molloy making a comeback for Norwood at a very late age, and I think the year was 1982. Around that time, his son, Glenn was dominating the junior grades. Did Graham and Glenn ever play Reserves football together? Graham didn't make it back to the league team.

After being absent since 1969, Graham Molloy played 17 games for the Norwood Reserves in 1982. His first son Rob Molloy didn't play for Norwood Under 17s until 1983 when he kicked 28 goals in 12 games. Rob kicked 121 goals for the U17s in 1984, and 88 goals for the U19s in 1986, but never went much further than that. Glenn played later than that, making his league debut in 1990.
