How long is it that now that Bomber has been at Geelong now?
Apparently he was _ that close to getting the flick during the big end of 2006 season review. If they can gave him another shot after a year like that, I think the only way you would see Bomber being sacked is if Geelong don't make the Prelims? Even that would seem a little harsh, as you would expect Geelong to make the GF, with the only thing that could slow them would be injuries?

The fact that he's a favourite son of the club gives Woosha a few extra credit points but IMO the Eagles would have to win about 7 games this year as well as avoiding big home defeats like they had last season for him to stay on.

I agree with this - Laidley has taken the Roos to the finals over the last few years, with a list that everyone has never rated as finals bound. If they don't make the 8, I think he'll still be retained. However, I beleieve the Roos will make the 8 once again this year, in around about position 6th-8th.
The Roos have never really "bottomed out" as such and had the luxury of snaring high draft picks like say, Carlton & Hawthorn before them, who have leap frogged them over the past couple of seasons. I guess consistently finishing somewhere between 6th-12th and sometimes a little highter, isn't really conducive to picking up the best new young talents on your list.

Wow, since 2000!I would have said 2002 or '03 if someone had asked me straight out. He definitely would have been gone if Geelong hadn't gone all the way in '07!
This exactly mirrors what I think too REB - but didn't post it for fear of retribution from Geelong fans such as yourself, who might have seen the post as trolling!
I just don't think Bomber has the match day nous that is required. Bomber is too slow to react and I don't think he commands the respect from his players that someone like Clarkson does for his chargers. Geelong's recent success can be largely contributed to the recruitment staff, more so than Bomber.

If the Roos finish mid-table again this year and Laidley and the football department have to make the call and agree to move a lot of blokes on. They're not going to win a premiership doing what they're doing at the moment, they need to head south on the ladder for a few years to be able to head a long way north. Whether this is too big of a financial risk for them I'm not sure, but it needs to happen if they want another premiership within the next 10 years.Dutchy wrote:blink wrote:Booney wrote:-- Laidley (NM) $475,000 --- Finals will give him another year, but no finals? Largely contributed to the father-son rule you mean.....

Scarlo and Ablett are guns this is true but when Scarlo played his first match he had eight goals kicked on him. My understanding of the current rule is that if we wanted a father son today we would have to give up a draft pick or something like that to get him if another club wanted that player (not certain of the rule). When Scarlo started he looked anything but a champion fullback and there wasn't a lot of fanfare surrounding his debut.
Obviously Ablett was always going to be a gun but let's have a look at some of our other father sons. Hawkins still hasn't arrived, Blake is treading water, Woolnough played two games before stuffing up his knees and Nathan Ablett couldn't be arsed.
Three of our premiership players were father sons. Here are some players you might just have heard of Joel Corey, Brad Ottens, Cameron Mooney, Steve Johnson, Darren Milburn, Cameron Ling, James Kelly, Jimmy Bartel, Tom Harley, Max Rooke, Andrew Mackie...not a father son to be seen. Next time try reading the full article instead of the gloop that get served up in the headline.
