Has just been announced on the radio re Don's tragic passing last night at the Hampstead Hotel celebrating New Years Eve. I am absolutely devastated as he was, apart from Barrrie Robran, my boyhood hero and one of the main reasons I follow this great club. I am 58 years old and still remember watching him play with excitement and trepidatation that something magic would happen and he would turn a game around. I have many great memories of Don and he was truely one of natures gentlemen who always spoke to the supporters without any airs and graces and was always at Prospect watching his beloved Roosters play. Other recent memories was a few years ago playing in the legends matches pre season and he could still hold his own. I brought my children up with stories of Don's playing expoits and I know that they too will be devasted by his passing. I was also over the moon when he was finally recognised and presented with his Magarey Medal albeit retrospectively many years later. My sincere condolences to Jan and all his family. RIP one of the true LEGENDS of SANFL football.

I saw him play too. Great player, and generally compettive but fair.
Only his flying knees were dangerous, but I don't think it was ever with deliberate intent to injure.

Tragic News. Don was everything a footballer stood for and was a true champion. His love for the game was second to none. I was fortunate enough to see some of career and still remember the high speckies, the long droppies.

I had the very great pleasure of talking to Don just a couple of months ago when he attended a function at the Eagles.

I too was lucky to see him play with one of the best leaps in footy, a wonderful marker of the ball and terrific at drop kicks.

Not only a great legend at North but also to the SANFL - truly saddened by this news.

I have never met the man or his family but he was way up on the list of ex-players I would have loved to sit down with for a couple of hours.

A few people I know have come accross him in their travels and all of them spoke very highly of him.

Not sure if my uncle played against him or in the era just before him but he speaks of him as being a brilliant player and a great person.

It is such a shame when we lose great people like him.

Im devestated.
A champion footballer and a champion man, he was always so fit that I thought he'd live to 200.
He had many chats with me ranging from footy games to Gala Dinners to the last one I had with him at the Royal Hotel at Torrensville of all places. He even drove me and some other North fans back to the Hampstead after a Norwood Oval game one night even though not knowing us from a bar of soap.
The only consolation is he died dancing up a storm on the dance floor.
I cant believe it, thanks to those who sent me SMSs this morning advising me as Ive been out and about all day and wouldn't have heard otherwise.

My 1st boyhood hero and I used to think it was a highlight to go and get some chook food from his business with my Grandfather and talk to him when in my pre-school years.

My dad always raved about how good he was too. You know that if he was the boyhood hero of B Robran, then he must have been something special.

I remember him was playing in a legends game at North's pre-season launch around 2006 or 2007ish and thinking he looked so fit, healthy and happy for someone aged around 70.

So this is very sad news. My condolences to his family, friends and the NAFC.

So sad to hear this. Don has been our Guest Auctioneer at United Football Club (Long Plains) for the last 20 plus years generously donating his time for our annual Guernsey Auction. He has helped us raise many many thousands of dollars in his time. Great man who would talk to anyone.
