A Live Scoreboard on your club's official site?

Postby Wedgie » Tue Jul 25, 2006 4:56 pm

I've been approached by the company that runs the Live Scoreboard on North's official site to try and sell the live scoreboard to the other SANFL clubs.
I sat down with him for a coffee today and I mentioned that cost my be inhibitive to many clubs but he was confident that a live scoreboard ona club's site may have a loss for one year but will actually be profitable in the long run as the hits on the NAFC official site's live scoreboard during games is astronomical and the stats gathered from one year on any club's official site would be easily enough to sell it to a sponsor.
The reason the compnay has contacted me is because he's aware I know a few people at the various SANFL clubs and am always keen to improve coverage for SANFL fans, he wanted to negotiate a % for me but I said I'd see what sort of interest I'd gain first as my main goal would be to get these on the sites to help promote the SANFL which I'm always keen to do.

The reason for this post is to gather people's opinions on how useful a live scoreboard would be on their site, basically its updated everytime there's a score and I have a prototype to show relevent people how easy it is to update from any WAP enabled phone. I'll be contacting people I know at most clubs by email or PM that might be able to sway the power's that be with a bit more detail.

Basically its a win/win situation, after 12 months it'd be very doubtful that any of these would run at a loss and it would provide a huge service to fans of the club's involved. I've seen how many hits the NAFC scoreboard hits (and where they come from) and was astounded to say the least.

Whilsts the news was less than palatable the only time I have "hit" the North site this year was to get the scores of the Bays v North game at Prospect.

If the Bays site had a live scoreboard I would certainly not bother Borat so much gettting the scores each Saturday and let him watch the game rather than text me scores every 20 or so minutes.....

The only thing that intrigued me on the North site was how that chair of Jars didn't break when he was sitting in it during Pre-season training.....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Not bad thinking dingalinga but the first year of a scoreboard operating would be virtually a loss as you'd require a fair decent amount of stats to show potential sponsors to get a return and I certainly couldn't cover that BUT having said that if I can't sell the idea to a club or 2 I would approach the web design company involved to see if there was a way we could "borrow" it for a while, perhaps if we had a year's data we/they could re-pitch it to the clubs then.

BUT the potential for further exposure of club's sponsors also should have the club's running them on their official sites.

Every club should have it on their site, it is a fantastic idea and helps out the supporters who cant make it to the game like TassieMedallist has already mentioned.

I guess it would depend on the percentage of country, interstate and international members each club has. I do think the live scoreboard and better websites in general could generate more membership.

I wonder whether an SANFL club could make money if they did up their website facilities and purchased a project player from Japan or South Korea and did a blog sort of thing on his career.

Would it be more cost-effective to have all the scores on the official SANFL website, rather than each club doing their own?

This would also make it easier for people wanting to check scores "around the grounds" as they would all be in the one central location.

I tend to agree with that, have it based on the SANFL website or something. I'm not really convinced there would be that much demand for it but with the level of media coverage likely to continue to decrease it may become more important. I'd be all for it if you can set it up and would use it just not sure how often others would. Id say you could set it up with very minimal costs so you might not have much to lose.

Are you sure it isn't just Brad refreshing the score every 2 seconds?

NO I don't refresh every two seconds it auto updates which probally refreshes it self and makes the hits look huge.

Kind of depends how you want to count the hits, hard to know how many unique IP addresses would really check SANFL scores in one day esspecially if its an average game and is on radio which people can stream of the net anyway. We looked at something similar as you are suggesting and also a mobile phones messaging service a few years back but from what we could tell there just wasn't the demand to make it worthwhile.

The technology is there you just have to make it cost effective, best of luck with it.

Wedgie,

Costs permitting it would be a great service for all SANFL clubs to offer to their fans.

In the alternative, what about having a live scoreboard(s) on this site? Radio stations have scoreboard sponsors - You could sell all live scoreboards to one sponsor, or sell 4 live scoreboards to 4 sponsors (one for each game). The First Bounce sponsor this site so why not have a live scoreboard sponsor(s) as well?

Plus, this site has other "rooms" - AFL, soccer, cricket etc. Why not consider ultimately putting live scoreboards in these rooms also for Adelaide United, the Redbacks, Pork Power, the Cows etc. ???

It would be cool having them all in one place.
And for "authenticity" - make it EvF GvH etc Haha.

Maybe there should be a cricinfo type service where it has scores as well as "running commentary" or flashes of information (describing what has been happening).

As a doggies supporter I would like to see an auto update on our site.

However I am always being told that centrals supporters are "precious" so ours would have to be modified for when we are losing. Perhaps it come with automatic excuses like "the umpires are cheats", "they blew the siren too early", "it's still early in the season" and "we'll do them in September"
We used to be good :-(

A great feature, no doubt.

It'd be even greater if other clubs CEO's could provide certain (or actually, ANY) information regarding their online scoreboards to other clubs.

To those asking, the scores are inputed using WAP technology from a mobile phone. Though I'm not positive about this (read the above sentence)

The replies that I have seen regarding live scores is usually " if they want to know the scores they should go to the game" fut for Doggies4eva and Sydney-dog that might be a bit hard. It would be much better than some one putting up posts after getting radio scores.

Haha the authentic idea is a ripper!! It will feel like you are really at the game!
Running commentary would be far easier during cricket i'd imagine.
