Really? They shortened 'association football' and came up with football? I think you are a tad confused. I thought soccer came from association and football originated from kicking a ball with one's foot. Compris?

No confusion here. Football comes from 'Association Football'.

You are out of your league arguing about things you don't know anything about. Give it a rest numpty.

Well if the word football originated from 'association football' can you provide a reference to anything that says so. Editing wikipedia yourself doesn't count.

Pointless argument about what you call the game.

However, Shrek has a small point in the fact that if I run out onto a field to play soccer/football, I can expect something that will no doubt involve less physical toughness than other sports i.e. AFL, Rugby etc.

Some of those moments of toughness referred too were accidental injuries. People fall over in the bath and knock themselves out, doesn't make them tough.

No doubt, Keane, was a "tough" player.

But lets face it, soccer (physically) has nothing as far as toughness on the other football codes.

Mentally, given the physical exertion and high game frequency, rates a mention.

Yes, soccer has it's moments, but hell, if I was going to pick between going one on one with either Roy Keane or Gorden Tallis, I'd be saying "hello Mr Keane".

But there are mentions of sports in there (tennis, running really fast etc) that aren't as tough as soccer/football, so I can't see why the argument continues. Agree to disagree, coz all you guys look pretty stupid right now.

At the end of the day, it's not important.

Wogball is a pretty rough call tho Shrek.

That's a good post SS. And there's no doubt you're right re the physical things, but the debate was started by some one who has since agreed with reasons as to why Soccer players may be considered tough....

You have dissuaded me from my original position but I still other sports display more toughness than soccer.

There's more to sport then just physical aspects....

The videos I posted were actually in response to a post sating there was no contact in the game. Just wanted to show there was.

Soccer to become football
December 16, 2004

SOCCER will officially become football in Australia next year after the Australian Soccer Association (ASA) announced it would change its name to Football Federation Australia (FFA).

ASA chairman Frank Lowy said the symbolic move would bring Australia into line with the vast majority of other countries which call the sport football.

"2005 will be one of the most crucial in the history of football in Australia and we will start it off with this symbolic move," Lowy said.

"The change in our corporate name is another part of the ongoing process of repositioning the game in Australia."

My mates and I have always referred to soccer as wogball. It's used in jest and isn't intended to offend anyone because quite obviously, it's played by ALOT more people than just 'wogs'. I don't care what anyone calls it. Just enjoy playing what you love boys and move on!

I don't recognise the authority of the FFA to change the name of a sport. Change the name of the league, call it whatever you want, but the game is still called soccer.

The top ten...

1. Allan Border
2. Leigh Matthews
3. Tommy Raudonikis
4. Glenn McGrath
5. Kostya Tszyu
6. Glenn Archer
7. Anna Meares
8. Tony Lockett
9. Steve Waugh
10. Gorden Tallis

I'm not much for feminists, but Meares is well deserving of the number 7 spot. She's as tough as they come both mentally and physically. There's quite a few athletes in that list that I don't think deserve to be there, but it comes down to people's personal preferences.

You are fighting a losing battle. There are plenty of tough Footballers that have played the game as the other guys have said. Roy Keane, Petr Cech, Carlo Cudicini are just a few examples of tough Footballers.

P.S. I have finished school as of today, so more time on here debating with you about Football (Soccer).

What did Keane do that was tough? Yes they may be tough compared to other soccer players but not compared to other sports. The frequency and severity of contact is far less than in other sports and when something really bad e.g. Cech happens it's very rare.

I accept SJABC's point about the frequency of matches but we have discussed that elsewhere.

You need to come up with something original yourself mate. The only person who has made a valid point on here was SJABC. DA has made himself look silly and you are heading the same way.
