Cede Nullis, can you post a link as I am still struggling.

I think the point is no one group should think they own a football club.

I've never see any Union Jack toting supporters saying they "own" the football club, have you?
All I see is a bunch of people supporting their club their way.

I have yet to see "Three Lions" printed on any CDFC merchandise

Probably because that would specifically represent England only. And again, this is a fan driven thing, not something the club pushes.

The fans you're talking about bring/wear things that for them, relate to their club.

They are not telling you how to support the team are they?
I would say the majority of CDFC supporters don't go to the game with any UK related stuff.
Why get upset about the ones that do?

And chanting UUUUdogs at games you only encourage them!!!!

Elizabeth developed in the 60s, our club entered the competition the 60s and a lot of people came from England and settled out North in the 60s, my parents too.
There's no club directive in regard to the Union Jacks at games etc, it's just a fan thing.
Why do people get upset by this?

The Union Jack is not the ENGLISH flag, the St.George flag is. The Union Jack is the flag of the United Kingdom, comprising more than just England.

Sorry to get people's knickers in a twist.

It was a serious question and querying the relevance, which I think someone has answered. Thank you.

Just thought that chants, flares etc which you see at soccer should stay in soccer games, not the Australian game where we should be sticking with Aussie traditions or creating new ones.

Yes, I should have said a lot of people emigrated from the UK in the 60s.

Great.

Next week I will go to my 11th Grand Final and I have never taken a British flag or anything, but I chant along and love the noise and colour those guys create. If the guys are proud of their heritage and it's part of the way they experience their team then would they listen to someone who tells them to stop?
It's been going on for decades FFS

By the way, if anyone has a guide book on how to support Aussie rules football, send it to the CDFC, I'm sure the fans would love some advice.
If you post it just remember it takes a while to sort through all the mail down there these days.

Agree re flares. Disagree completely re the chants. The Chants create a fantastic atmosphere and provide great team support. The players have mentioned numerous times how much they enjoy and how much the vocal crowd lifts them. I can understand opposition supporters not liking the chanting and singing as it potentially drowns them out. I think it's brilliant for the atmosphere. Better than the often sterile atmosphere i used to get when I was a Crows member for the first few years. Although i have noticed of late the Crows crowd starting a "u crows" chant. In the eighties early nineties as a kid, nothing better than standing in front of the stand at Elizabeth with the CCCEEEEENNNTTTTRRRRAAALLLSSS chant going. Probably pretty daunting for the opposition also.
Agree re flares, disagree re creating an atmosphere.

Not a rugby fan but an "Australia any sport" fan, I remember watching (on t.v) Australia play Wales. The singing by the Welsh crowd was awesome. Very inspiring.

Having said that - the Kiwis and other Pacific nations should rid league and union of the haka. It has nothing to do with those codes and they should be starting new traditions rather than following those of origins past....

8-[ Next time the you're at a game involving the All Blacks, make sure you hold a sign up saying "Get a new tradition, Maori's are a thing of the past"

Big sign I know, but fair crack DW. Comparing a traditional "war dance" done by natives of a particular country, to people dragging a Union Jack flag around is a bit different.

Personally I couldn't care if they use a Union Jack flag as I'm not English, but I had a word to a girl wearing an Australian Flag to last week's game, as a cape, and I politely asked her to pick it up as to not drag it on the ground. She did.

I don't see the difference Jabber.
What's the hakka got to do with the Anglos playing for New Zealand?
Nothing.
However, they've adopted something that is part of the culture of many of the supporters and players. Which is exactly the same as the English football culture that has been embraced by CDFC supporters.
I'm not a Pom and I don't like being referred to as one just because I'm from the Elizabeth area - but I realise that that's part of my community's heritage and am happy to accept that the colour added by the chants, singing and flags brings something different and very enjoyable to our game.

Ever yelled out "Carn the Tiges"? I've being guilty of calling out "Carn the dogs", "doggies", "the Bulldogs" "Central" Carn boys" etc don't see how it matters. I guess it's easier to say than "carn Central Districts Football Club".

I agree, you dont hear West supporters yelling out U Dogs and their emblem was a bloodhound for many years.

The topic is actually more interesting than the initial crap now. BTW Ive worn Japanese tops, Pommy tops and Canadian tops to North games (not to mention Geelong, Raiders and NSW tops). Usually whatever is at the top of my draw.
Who gives a flying ****, its a footy game not a fashion show.

My only comment on this is that for years opposition supporters have been calling us a team of whinging Poms. Therefore, it is only right we use the English or British flags, is it not?

I'll never understand why Dogs fans wave pommy flags. But then I don't get why you see so many people wearing Carlton gear at Sturt games. Or Power merchandise at a Magpies game. Or baby-poo yellow vinyl-sleeved bomber jackets at Iggles games. Or Crows gear anywhere

It's every club's right to promote itself in any way it deems fit. If Central fans want to chant "U Dogs" and wave British flags then that's their prerogative.

How many older Central supporters remember 1971 when, due to the sudden surge of the Bulldogs, a number of English migrants were beginning to take interest in the game. Being used to a football code where scoring was at a premium, it was amusing watching some of them going off their nut if Central kicked the first goal :)

It was good for footy, but I wasn't too impressed by the Salisbury council naming streets after the Central players. A strange accolade for a team who finished third :)
